Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Macro Express - MiniReview
« Last post by wraith808 on April 07, 2009, 12:38 PM »
I use Direct Access which seems to be in the same category, but not in the same category, as MacroExpress and its ilk seem to be a superset of Direct Access and similar products.  Am I seeing this the correct way?  Could I replace DA with ME, and then take advantage of the advanced functionality also?

Perhaps a place for posting more substantial needs on a commercial basis also- maybe someone doesn't need a programmer in house, but needs a specialized program for their business that isn't available elsewhere.

The one thing to mention about Adobe Lite is that it *isn't* sanctioned by Adobe, but just someone that altered the installer (and doesn't say exactly what was altered).  Not something that I trust, personally...

I like the dialog idea better than the redirect, and like *both* better than CAPTCHA.  I'd think that a dialog or a redirect would deter bots enough without the CAPTCHA.

I'm not in Vista... it's not really a big deal; I never even thought about it before I saw this thread... being the software addict I am, I *had* to look at it.  :-[

It would probably be a cool addition, but nothing that I'm missing by not having it.

Oubliette, a freeware password manager by tranglos.

Another vote for Oubliette.  Though its not supported anymore, it does include source, which is a major plus for me, and it's done well.

http://www.nbos.com/...oducts/keep/keep.htm

Finally there's a personal information manager designed specifically for gamers... The Keep v1.0 from NBOS Software. Use The Keep to organize and track all your gaming information. Use it for your campaign notes, campaign logs, maps, handouts,... all the information you need to track for a successful campaign!

http://www.drivethrurpg.com has a bundle with this and fractal mapper (another good program, though I don't use it as much) for $52.  Pretty good deal considering the fact that The Keep by itself is 34.95.

The applications that I'm talking about have their own functionality to minimize to tray- evernote, timetraces, tag everything, earthdesk, outlook, clipnote.  The ones I was playing around with were outlook, evernote, and timetraces.  By the time I tried it with three applications, I was done- if it had only been one application having a problem, I would have thought it was the application.  But three separate ones?

Back on topic :)

* Another vote for The Journal
* I also use The Keep for organizing my PbEM notes and resources
* Benubird Pro.  Just started using it recently, but its amazing how I don't even want to get things in 'dead tree' format anymore after I can organize my pdfs so easily.
* geek.Menu, which allows me to organize everything on the go.
* Evernote
* WordWeb
* Zulupad Pro
* Ideamason

And then on my iPhone
* Stanza
* Evernote
* Spreadsheet

But that seems pretty basic- I was just trying to clean up my tray notification area, so I set my applications to minimize to this program, then tried to access one of them, and it just disappeared- I could see it in the task manager, so it was still running, but I couldn't get it back until I pressed refresh menu on the app- then it reappeared, but I still couldn't get it to restore!  I tried several apps that way, and none of them worked...

I plan to a limited extent.  But I often find myself in the design often, never build category; every time I get ready to develop, I end up revising the design again.  :-[

But I do notice that when I actually get into a project, it tends to go smoother than the ones at work where they never give enough time to design... ::shrug::

I tried it as it looked interesting.  Definitely a no-go from me.  My feedback on uninstall:

Tried to to basic things with it and they didn't work, i.e. pressed hotkey and menu continually painted for 5 minutes freezing application, tried to access hidden application and could not, duplicated icons, and several other show stopper defects.

Both of these should be pretty easy to add (and pretty useful besides), so I'll try to get them added as soon as possible (and the docs done :))

That's already available :)  In the configuration file, there is a parameters xml tag that handles that.

No, that is incorrect.  PortableApps.com menu uses the same system (geek.Menu is a fork of that), and also in any case where you need to launch an application from a different location than the executable lies it would work- sort of a portable shortcut... perhaps I need to rename it to Portable Shortcut or something like that, and perhaps enhance it so that the application doesn't need to be in a sub directory of the shortcut...

Not a failing per se, but I did ask, and didn't receive.  But maybe that was a fault on my end.

I was all ready to slap down my $50 for Benubird Pro, but being the scatter brain that I am, waited till the last day (March 17) without taking into account the time difference between NA and Europe (so when I tried to purchase it last night, the Donation Coder discount no longer showed up upon check-out).  I don't know if askSam has any killer advantage over Benubird Pro; perhaps the breadth of things you can stuff into it and the templates/wizards with which to organize them, making it a PIM, Address Book, Email archiver, Personal Journal, Cataloger, etc, all rolled into one.  (If the Benubird Pro discount ever comes around again, I wouldn't be surprised if I purchased it.  I really like Benubird's interface and PDF handling abilities.)

The people there are very nice, and I'm sure if you e-mailed them and told them the situation, they'd be willing to give it to you if possible.  Worth a try IMO if you were thinking about pulling the trigger.  I'm really enjoying it, personally.

As long as the platform enforces some QC on the DLC (i.e. its worthy DLC and not just completing an unfinished game), then I'm all for it.  It gives new life to something that you might have really enjoyed but want more (Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Mass Effect are all good examples of this).

I'm actually using BenuBird Pro for the same sort of thing as askSam.  Any idea of what advantages askSam has over Benubird Pro?   (BTW, that link is to the current discount for members.  It was supposed to end yesterday, but you can try it and see if it still works)
