General Software Discussion / Re: Is QwikMark the smallest benchmark tool?
« Last post by J-Mac on August 02, 2010, 03:16 PM »

J-Mac, QwikMark is supposed to work with everything from Windows 95 through Windows 7 64 bit. I found this author's comment which indicates it even works on SSDs & USB flash drives.

On my three year old dual core system I'm getting: CPU FLOPS- 16 Gigaflops; Disk Transfer- 98MB/second.

Regards.

Great! Thanks sajman99!

Ah, no. Whenever I buy DRM tracks/albums, I immediately burn them to CD. So, I've got access to the tracks but I have quite a few that I purchased about 8 years ago that I can no longer play from the orginal files, as the DRM licenses are MIA and Puretracks won't let me download up to date licenses anymore.

So you burned them to CD. Now have you tried ripping them back to your hard drive as MP3? With something other than WMP?

Mike, are you saying that burning the tracks to a CD and then ripping them back to your hard drive is not working? I understand that they won't play as is but you can still burn them even if you can't play them, right?

I mentioned this because I have done this in the past and it worked for me.

Thanks!

Darwin, do you have Tabbles? And if yes, do you use Tabbles?

Thanks!

Weird! Something is blocking you folks. The site is up; no doubt about that. But something is blocking the site for certain people or geographic areas. I haven't come across that before.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: New program: ActiveHotkeys (freeware)
« Last post by J-Mac on August 01, 2010, 10:51 PM »
Hi Marek!

Quick question: What is the purpose of the toggle feature? I had a conflicting hotkey today (apparently after installing AutoHotKey its default script uses Win+Z which was already assigned to Ultra Recall by default. And AutoHotKey won!), and was searching for a new one to use (for Ultra Recall). I found that sometimes I would click to find active hotkeys and then when I tried to assign one that was supposedly not active it was rejected by the app with an error stating that it was already in use. So I click on the search button again and all the Yes and No's reversed themselves. I read the About tab and saw where it mentioned a "toggle" feature. What is that for and how does that work? It confused the heck out of me!

Thank you.

Living Room / Re: Why do support people never answer questions?
« Last post by J-Mac on August 01, 2010, 10:32 PM »
Actually that answer is much clearer than some I have seen. It means "No", they have no current plans to support The Bat - or if they maybe, possibly do they aren't talking about it yet. Let's face it: software developers are not going to expose their look-ahead plans. Never happens - well almost never, and when one does if they are off at all with their schedule they get grief forever.

lanux, you might want to disable IE's "Show Friendly HTTP Errors" option and find the actual sub-status error. That will shed some more light on why the error is occurring. Your error says that IE CAN reach the website but doesn’t have permission to view it.

Are you using an alternate DNS server?

Thank you.

Try another browser just for the fun of it. I am getting there with Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, all latest builds.

No, it's not dead at all. I got there right before my last post and again just now. Maybe something on your machine is blocking that URL?

mouser,

Last update in November 2006? The download page claims it only works through XP. True?

Thank you.

Hey rno2,

You can make the tracks playable if you wish. Just burn them to a CD and then rip the CD back to your hard drive again. The DRM should be gone.

I have some Napster files but they are not DRM-protected. I downloaded them way back before Napster was even sued in the beginning. I do have a few that WMP thinks are DRM-protected but truly aren't. (I downloaded them when I had a Rhapsody subscription but ended up purchasing them, however WMP still refused to play them when Rhapsody was no longer installed on my box.) Not sure if that would work for you. Actually, not even sure which ones they are!!

Hi Perry.

So will FARR be the actual interface for ContactFX? Not sure how that will go. I use FARR for launching programs but nothing else. I've never understood it well enough to do anything else with it.

Thanks!

These tracks must have some coding in them somewhere that triggers the license check, I would think. Of course I know nothing about coding so I am probably way off, but how else does WMP know to play or not play them?

Thanks!

Similar problem only with Firefox and only since 3.6: My error is always that "Server busy..." dialog which pops under FF and gives no indication it is there except that FF stops responding. Maddening! Not extension-related as it occurs in FF Safe Mode and even on a fresh install of FF without extensions.

Are they tagged in any useful way?  Also, I'm not sure how you'd determine if the DRM is "valid".

Many DRM controlled tracks require a check with an online server; WMP does this which is why some tracks can't be played in WMP, at least 11 and 12. I guess rno2 is wondering whether or not any app can run a check like WMP without having to try to play each track. Like a background check?

To add to my dismay, when I brought this up in the XYplorer forum, DonL made it clear that he doesn't think this is an important feature to add, despite the fact that it's one of the most-requested features.
Have you read the entire thread over there? You may have missed the latest post by DonL where he says:
Well, I'm quite optimistic that i can do browse and extract for ZIP and RAR in September.  8)

Notice that the post you linked to was made four days after the post here that mentioned that feature?   8)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Super Flexible File Synchronizer Mini-Review

I think there's a way to designate how/where you want a program to open via switches in the Start Menu link. Adding something on to the link like " /m" for minimized or " /h" for hidden; something like that. Anyone know more about how to do that?

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: IMAP Email hosting
« Last post by J-Mac on July 18, 2010, 10:54 AM »
Tuffmail is good and i sent several people there, because the pricing is better than fastmail

I'm staying with fastmail, though, because it has worked really well for me, there are some clever niche features (jabber based private im, minimal ftp/http hosting) which come in handy now and then.

I last year switched to a family account for R and I - and and have about 55 domains in it - for some I even use the DNS.
I am also starting to use the address book more, but they dont yet have live sync, only import/export

I have an enhanced account, about three years left on my current 5 year subscription. I love the aliases and the ability to have my domains there. I have two domains there but all I do is use them for emails at those domains' addresses. I did have a few web pages there but I have had a little trouble getting them to what I want. Very different from when I had them hosted at a regular hosting company! Are you using any of your domains there as web sites? If so please point me toward a resource that would help me to get there.

My main problem is that they dont sent email updates or anything so I have to remember to check their blog and forums to hear of new features and tweaks.

Same here. Plus I don’t bother with their web mail page anymore instead accessing it all from Thunderbird, so I know nothing at all about what they are doing unless I check the blog and/or the Email Discussions forum to see what folks are bitching about lately! The blog used to be neglected so I got out of the habit of even checking it a few years ago. I have to remember that they are actually posting there now.

Thanks!

No, doesn’t sound good at all to me. HorizonData is one poor company. I purchase FD-ISR about 2 yrs ago and also their "Gold" support plan. Three separate support tickets submitted and they never responded to one of them. Their forum is filled with others who have had similar issues, or at least it was; it seems that posts, threads, and sometimes whole subforums disappear when comments are going what they consider "the wrong way".

I say keep away from this outfit.
