General Software Discussion / Re: Verifying if an email has been spoofed

Ok. I had a suspicion that every part of the header might be possible to spoof. Thanks for clarifying.

General Software Discussion / Verifying if an email has been spoofed
« Last post by nosh on April 14, 2008, 06:42 AM »
A friend of a friend has been getting stalked for a while. Recently she and a friend both received the same email from each others addresses that neither of them has sent. She's going to call me up and I'll give her the usual drill about changing her pw from a new PC, hard to guess pw q&a, anti-keyloggers, etc but I suspect that their accounts may not have been hacked at all and the mails may just be spoofed to creep her out. They both still have access to their accounts and from the malicious track-record of the person stalking her, it seems highly unlikely he/she would allow this esp. after disclosing that the accounts have been "compromised". I myself have seen a few spam mails slip through the cracks to my inbox because they appear to be sent from the same address receiving them. Is there any way to tell an authentic mail from a spoofed one? Both parties use gmail.

These seem to work fine in XP.

Tip - If you're running DisableRMB, Control+Rightclick & Shift+Rightclick can be used most places to emulate a right click.

I used a Corsair (blue) recently and the speeds were unimpressive - also, the cap still sits loose and slips off real easy. Still, a nice drive if you're someone prone to dropping stuff all the time. :) No other advantages to speak of.

Reg. the GTs - that's shocking coz the premium is really high!

General Software Discussion / Re: KMPlayer going commercial?
« Last post by nosh on April 11, 2008, 02:30 PM »
KMPlayer is brilliant! The only gripe I've had with it is mpg videos didn't look as good with its internal codec as they did with the system default codec. Other than that it's completely self-contained and excels in every department. I wouldn't bother wasting time on alternatives just yet.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?

I'm disappointed with Comodo. I'm running it without the anti-malware or HIPS addons (which completely freeze up everything) but the least I expect it to do is inform me when an executable has changed. Sygate was quite reliable in that sense. Any other light-weight 3rd party firewalls out there? I think I'll give PC Tools a try next.

I like this one for its simplicity. You just store it on the ipod, click on it once after adding files (using your favorite file manager/ music player/whatever) and you're ready to go! No GUI or complications to speak of. :)

Ctrl+F5 will do a full reload of the page (bypassing the cache). Try that before restarting.

Parfait! :)

That's awesome, ak_! :up: Thanks!

Edit: The version numbers are now left untouched, as intended, but I'm getting slightly strange behavior reg. replacing underscores with spaces. It replaces underscores if the target file is in D:\Tools, where I have the FileNanny executable. The underscores aren't replaced if the target file is at another location (including D:\). I even did a system restart to make sure it was the latest version in operation. Is this something to do with the .ini variables being local to that folder only?

Just to clarify, I'm perfectly happy with the app now that version numbers are untouched, this is simply feedback.

Kristian, I admire your positive positive attitude to my somewhat harsh take on things.  :up:

I suggest you give the UI elements as many useful popup tips/hints as you can in subsequent releases, if done right it could  make the program a lot more friendlier for people evaluating it. Advanced users could turn these off.

Good luck with your software. :)

I tried this program because it takes a unique approach and I have some issues with it.

 - Filters don't function 100%
From the help file "The clones list to the right of the result list shows all folders that shares content (clone files or folders containing shared clones) with the folder selected in the result list."
I've filtered out *.ini and yet when I select a folder in the result list that has only 6 clones, I see a whole bunch of folders (totaling to over 100 clones) in the clones list - I'm assuming this is because of all the desktop.ini dupes which haven't been filtered. The filtered files also show in the bottom pane.

 - I selected show only clone files but the right hand bottom pane still shows all files, this is a nightmare situation if you have hundreds or thousands of files in that folder.

 - The bottom pane columns do not sort as one would expect them to when the column headers are clicked.

I didn't find the folder based approach particularly useful either, just the opposite, infact. After getting really frustrated with it I fired up Easy Duplicate Finder, a freeware alternative - and it did the scan in a fraction of the time and gave me the results in a really intuitive format - the column sorting works - I can sort by folder (it shows paths) and click "select all dupes in this folder", which is a way more functional folder-based approach.

I'm sorry for being so harsh but IMO, Clone Tools is confusing, frustrating and, at $40 in a category where there are really decent freeware alternatives available, over-priced. Maybe I slipped up somewhere and could not fully exploit the functionality but I did spend time reading the tutorial, I'm sure you won't hesitate in setting me right if that's the case.  ;)

3.1.8.3220 is the last beta linked from the main page, which I'm assuming is http://locate32.net

The only reference to .3260 is regarding translations. Am I missing something?

I don't really need content search but I'd be lying if I said I haven't been curious about Archivarius for a while. I'll give it a shot. Thanks Darwin!  :up:

OK, couple of quick questions.
Does Archivarius have a thumbnail view for images?
Why do you use both? Or more specifically, what does Archivarius lack that Locate32 makes up for?

new beta supports thumbnails as well

OMFG! Gotta try it (again) now. I installed the latest Copernic Desktop Search just for this feature yesterday and no matter how much they harp about speed gains I still find it s-l-o-w!

Edit: The program's home page lists a slightly old beta (it didn't have the thumbnails feature).
Here's the link to the Locate32 Beta Page

I hadn't even noticed it doesn't auto-shutoff, I'm no help there. But, since you aren't an Apple fanboy, you might want to take a look at this.

No problem, Curt. This exact problem had been affecting me too but it was something I'd not really bothered doing anything about so far. I wouldn't know for sure about tray minimizing affecting things, I suspect it may have something to do with the window being hidden. I see skrommel's script has the code
DetectHiddenWindows,On
to check for hidden windows too, maybe that's required here... no need to break your head over it though, unless you really need it.
The script didn't work for me at first coz I had the 'File' menu hidden and the menu shortcut to close Firefox [Alt+F+X] wouldn't work till I unhid it.

Yep. IfWinExist = If the Firefox window exists.
The script doesn't have anything to do with exiting Windows, X-ecutor checks for that.

OK, _total_ AHK novice here but something really simple seems to work for me, the only caveat is you'll have to use it with Xecutor which will intercept the shutdown and run the "script":

IfWinExist,  ahk_class MozillaUIWindowClass
{
    WinActivate
    Send {Alt}FX
    return
}

This will activate Firefox if it is running and close it through the menu system. I'm using FF 2.x, not sure what the class name would be if you're using v. 3.x. Try running the script manually to see if it closes FF, then restart. You can assign it as a shutdown command to Xecutor if all goes well.

Edit: Xecutor is postcard-ware for non-commercial use.

Read some of the points in a little more detail and *ahem* it rather obviously is.  :-[
