GOE 2007 Challenge Downloads / HowLong2It - GOE Challenge 2007 Entry
« Last post by tinjaw on December 01, 2007, 11:14 PM »
Here is my entry - HowLong2It

HowLong2It is a way to keep track of how many days since some date in the past and how many days until some date in the future. The applications is always only a click away. Click on the tray icon and the status window will popup to show you the dates/tasks you are tracking.

Screenshot - 12_4_2007 , 4_55_44 PM_thumb.png

I have setup a webpage for it. It is based of an idea from spankymcgee.

This is an odd entry, because I built it, and everything related to it (the web page etc.) in about a total of less than 24 man hours. I hadn't planned on entering this contest, but Friday I decided to see what I could do using AutoIt in the time remaining. I will be doing a heck of a lot of work on this over the next few days to weeks. Right now all that is there is the executable file. There is no installation necessary. There is no documentation at this point, so it will be the first thing I do starting... now.

I am trying to get version 0.3 of HowLong2It in before the midnight deadline. It is based on one of the suggestions of a member.

Living Room / Re: Finally I tracked down my wife!
« Last post by tinjaw on December 01, 2007, 08:29 AM »
I'm an idiot - I knew this was a joke going in and for some unfathomable reason entered my wife's real cell phone number! Oops. Heh, heh - never happened...

Wife: "Honey, why am I getting so many telemarketeers calling me on my cell phone?"
Husband (feigning innocence and a Spanish accent): " I know nothing, nothing"

No, that sounds more like something Basil would do, not Manuel.

Living Room / Re: Gamespot Editor Fired for Writing an Honest Review
« Last post by tinjaw on December 01, 2007, 07:59 AM »
The sad sad thing is that even if every one of the remaining writers at GameSpot all got up and walked away nothing at site would change. They would just get shitty writers to take over and the site would continue to sell ads and write reviews giving scores based on the amount of money spent. And the public would go along with it all and keep reading..

I think the best thing that could happen is that they do quit en mass and make a big stink about it. I am sure other gaming sites will snatch them up quick and give them good jobs, but relocating and all that stuff that goes with it would suck.

I don't think I have read a review in years for the purpose of determining if a game is worth while. I don't think much of game reviews overall (even though I used to do some for The Wargamer). I'd much rather play a demo or play it on a friends computer that already owns the game, with part of the reason I'm interested is that if a friend has it, it is more likely I will like the game to begin with.

Developer's Corner / Re: Dina in TTF format?
« Last post by tinjaw on November 29, 2007, 09:08 AM »
They don't scale, they look like crap at anything but their designed resolution... so, why?
They were used originally because that was all their was. TrueType fonts and such didn't exist. Now they are generally used because they allow you to produce fonts that look better at their native size than a font designed for a different size and scaled.

The closest to perfect I found was the Proggy font, which the author kindly allows you to modify. So I started building this font using Proggy as the base, and with inspiration from Tobi, Fixedsys and some old DOS fonts I used to love.

That's actually a synthesizer. That is what they used to look like before they went digital and started to just look like electronic keyboards. The one in the picture (as you can see from the upper left) is named Damius. Damius is the name given to TOTO’s Steve Porcaro and David Paich's synthesizer.

Don't forget that Dina is based off of Proggy, which is available as a TTF. I used to use Proggy exclusively until Jeff Atwood turned me on to Consolas.

Has EPIC, EFF, or CDT picked up on this? I assume they have. I'll need to check their websites today and see if they have put out the message to get on the phone to Senators about this.

OK. I am going to attempt a coding marathon and see if I can whip this little ditty up by the deadline for the Getting Organized Programming Contest.

Anybody who has and things they would like to add to this little utility, go ahead an post to this thread now and if I can squeeze it in easily enough, it just might make it in. This includes any complimentary functionality you can think of. For example, I think that besides showing how many day *since* something, I will also show how many days *until* some date, like a project deadline. What else can you folks think of?

Renegade just did a program something like this: Add Days. maybe he could be prompted to add additional features to this app..

Did Renegade add this to his program? Did anybody decide to make this?

It finished and it found one bad block and some problems with the file table. But now I can get through the "Error-checking" on the Tools tab without any problems. It looks like I may have gotten off lucky. I think it was because the drive was already in power save mode and it only fell three feet onto a carpeted floor.

Nope. The event log was the first thing I checked.

I'm at home now and I just started up chkdsk f: /f /r. We'll see what happens. Ah! as I am typing this I just saw it say that it deleted the directory that was the one I was having problems with.

Time to make some dinner and check back with it in a little while.

Thanks everybody for the help.

Oh - Did I mention the 8 hour Zarbizarre mix?

Yep. Apparently you stopped remembering things when you stopped drinking.  :P I'm happy to hear that you have that under control. We all have horror stories about friends and family that don't. I send good karma your way. Keep it up. Oh, I've heard some pretty good mashups of techno and metal. I haven't kept track of them, but I'll start to as I hear them again.

When I do a chkdsk on the external, it is finding the errors, but it reports "Errors found.  CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode." So I assumed that means I need to do it at boot time.

So.....?

When I rebooted, it started to perform the chkdsk, but on the C: drive. I went to bed. When I woke up Windows was booted and I can't tell if it even did a chkdsk on the external USB drive.

So I have shelved this until the weekend when I will put the drive in a sled and stick it in a box so it is connected to a proper IDE controller.
