Which OS are you running?

Windows 8.0

Let me try it again without this external keyboard.  Sometimes the touchpad can get, er, touchy with stuff leaning on it.  I'll unzip and try it fresh just a sec..

Running again to try what you wrote I double clicked the tray icon to Show and instead got this:

I noticed when I saved the old .ini file to desktop, then deleted all old files from folder, then unzipped new files in and move the .ini file back(as I usually do with portable programs) I could not search to get a location.  City State Country or Zip when clicking Lookup  Button nothing happens.

I unzipped into an empty folder and it worked as expected as far as that goes.  The other weird thing when I click on Full Forecast link, I get the weather forecast page.  But as soon as I slide the mouse over the browser page it starts showing me some weird desktop screen caps.  Like a futuristic building and a rain forest shot.  I can't click on anything to get the page to do anything.

Are you just trying to get rid of that ridiculous extra screen where you have to press a key to get to the logon screen?

No.  But since you mention it I will check out Tweaker.  The key I am trying to avoid is hitting Enter with the Desktop tile in upper left corner.  It seems to be working since using my program to start the Tray programs I added recently rather than using their built in "start with Windows" function.  The Start Screen comes up.  Then when Start Menu 10 Start Button shows, it goes to the Desktop without any intervention.  The other weird thing I notice in Start Menu 10 is if the option is enabled to hit Winkey twice to go back to the Desktop from the Start Screen, when in Desktop if I hit the Winkey, it will go to the Start Screen but only remain there while I hold the key down.  As soon as I release it I am back at the Desktop.

No biggie.  I just disabled the Winkey option.  :)

I have never tried Windows 8. Mine is 32-bits Windows 10 Home

but _7_, _8_, _X_, and _10_ are all marked "Platforms: From Windows XP up to Windows 10 (32 and 64 bit)"

no, I only have a key for some of them

ehh... just MAYBE your "10" -key will also work with "X".

I had Start Menu X Pro from a giveaway.  It did not skip start screen at all that I remember.  This one worked but perhaps it is a side effect of adding more toys that start when Windows starts.  I added a disk LED indicator and Alt Drag mouse utility.  I guess I could use my DelayedCuts to auto start them and see if that clears it up.

If I find out anything I will follow up.

I notice MultiCommander has updated the online documentation.  There are step by step instructions for creating user defined commands etc..  One of these days I have to play with it in depth as it is supposed to have 64 bit builds with true multi-threading.

I run Start Menu 10 Pro 5.80 32 bit, and I have not had any problems - and no start screen at all.

What OS are you running?  Mine is on Windows 8.0.

I spoke too soon.  Now every day on the first boot of the day it hangs at the start screen.  Hitting Enter or clicking on the Desktop tile does nothing. I have to control alt del and log off, then log back in.  Then it works.  It's easier just to turn the option off and hit Enter to go to the Desktop.  Sheesh.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Antivirus bypassed with 10 lines of code
« Last post by MilesAhead on March 24, 2016, 03:52 PM »
I am not versed in the field.  But what the article seems to say is that signature AV detectors are able to be bypassed by storing the malware in the exe image in a form that does not match the signature.  So if something simple like XORing each byte with the character 'x' to encrypt it, fools the AV then other stuff like compression with a password should too I would think.

He does note that heuristic detection is another matter.  Meaning watching the code execute and getting suspicious if it does stuff like rewrite the registry in ram or whatever.

All this stuff getting us away from doing things in a straight ahead manner is getting depressing.  I am convinced that all the stupid password requirements(for online accounts as example) are designed to get users to lock themselves out of their own accounts.  I mean if online banking is being penetrated by dictionary attacks it means they have no security and are letting bots attempt hundreds of logons per second.  At least to my way of thinking.

It seems to me like security for the sake of selling more security.  In the end your identity is still stolen if someone has your SSN and all the rest is crap.  They should just pass a law that malware vendors put a comment in the header "THIS IS MALWARE" so we don't have to keep updating databases every day.  :)

Just a note for those who may be interested in trying MultiCommander.  The help has been updated.  Now there are detailed instructions how to create User Defined Commands including Custom Commands.  See this link for Creating User Defined Commands

Edit: You can assign the command to a button.  Also it can be entered on the input line.  Anything not recognized is passed on to Windows to process.

And to be fair, I was never a good enough guitarist to pick up what anybody was doing in a video anyway; I figured that's what lessons were for.

Most people who watched Jimi were not guitarists.  But they still wanted to watch the technique.

I don't understand how one would play an Eric Clapton tune out of a snare drum only.  :)

Added Shift Scroll Lock to resync the muting to the scroll lock Led indicator without having to rerun the script.  It just calls Reload.  This is useful if you should actually press the dedicated Mute Button throwing the scoll lock Led out of sync. I could poll but how often is muting really used?  I hardly ever mute since unmute would tend to blast the hardware if the volume was up high.  But anyway...   :)

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. ;
  2. ; any other settings here
  3. ;
  4. ; sync ScrollLock LED and volume muting on script start
  5. ;
  6. If (GetKeyState("ScrollLock","T"))
  7.   Run, nircmd mutesysvolume 1
  8. else
  9.   Run, nircmd mutesysvolume 0
  10.
  11. ; Global Hotkey
  12.
  13. +ScrollLock::
  14.     Reload
  15. return
  16.
  17. ~ScrollLock::
  18.    Run, nircmd mutesysvolume 2
  19. return

Hehe, this thread has come close to de-volving into "Recommend new music to me, and if there's a video, all the better, but we all know it's about the tunes..."

I guess I still resent the MTV gimmick from years ago.  Force the viewer's eyes to refocus every 2 1/2 seconds and they won't change the channel.  :)  Unless there's hot chicks in a video that doesn't employ that technique I usually am not much interested.  Exceptions would be clean video of Jimi Hendrix that shows his guitar work in closeup.  SRV or Miles Davis etc..   But yet another drummer "playing" a snare drum full of milk I can live without.  :)

Pretty nice (well as music goes.. not sure how to rate it as a music video..).  :up:

I don't know why the Tube insists everything has to be a video.  Zillions of music uploads where the "video" is the album cover sitting there(or twirling/fading if the uploader is a special effects wannabe.)  :)

Thanks to both of you!  I'll look into the program mentioned.  Always good to have another tool handy.  Skwire, if you do have the chance and inclination, go for it.

A friend of mind wrote some C-sharp code that does the job, too, more or less as requested.  But one must edit the code a tiny bit, and then compile.  Not sure if I should somehow post his code, or what.

Unless your friend posted the code somewhere publicly I would check with him/her before publishing it yourself.  If there are directories "hard wired" into the source code perhaps you can request the author get the directory paths from an .ini file.  That would remove the necessity to recompile.  I believe C# has Properties so it should be pretty easy to set default directories and other settings and make a small input box so that the user can change them while the program is running, and save for next time or whatnot.

do you know any way to use Alt Drag one-handed?
You could turn on the windows feature 'sticky keys' for that, perhaps?

That works with MoveIt but not Alt Drag.  No biggie.  My fake mouse gesture in MoveIt is enough to skate by while cinnamon rolling.  :)

If Alt Drag proves stable then I am happy.  :)

I don't know what its like where you are, but man, the cinnamon buns here (Toronto) in Ikea are great... you can smell them in half the store. They do that on purpose because cinnamon scent makes you buy things - I was reading it on the internet so it must be true! (well I can believe it)

I wish I could get fresh baked.  The Entenmann's they sell in the supermarkets aren't too bad.  But a box of six is almost $7.00 now.  Ridiculous price.  The vending machines at the college have Big Texas brand for $1.25.  Lucky for you Toronto is cold so I won't be sneaking up there to heist your C Rolls.  :)

Edit:  I am from Boston originally.  But I have lived in South Florida for over 20 years.  I have become acclimatized.  Anything below 60 F and I want to put on a hoodie.  :)

Edit2:  Speaking of cinnamon aroma, I worked for a short time at a house cleaning service.  One guy there had his own "secret formula" that he sprayed around the room after cleaning.  The major component was cinnamon scent.  He claimed he got consistently bigger tips when he used the cinnamon scent as a finishing touch.

You can make it more functional and robust by adding a variable to keep the state of mute, and an if statement to check it.

Instead I added a GetKeyState() on script startup to put them in sync.  The code in my first post has the new lines.

You don't need an external utility to mute volume.

Try
Send {Volume_Mute}
in autohotkey. You can make it more functional and robust by adding a variable to keep the state of mute, and an if statement to check it.

I tried that approach first.  It does not work on my Laptop. Probably because I have reversed the FN key so that the special keys are F1 to F12 by default.  I have to hold down the FN key to get the special key actions.  Anyway, if someone wants to change their script they are free to do so.  I find nircmd.exe can do dozens of handy things.  So I see no reason not to use it.

Using AutoHotkey and nircmd makes it easy to use Scroll Lock key to toggle the master volume muting.

NirCmd download site

AutoHotkey download site

There is a built in functionality in AHK to send the volume mute key.  But it may not work on all systems.  More likely to be universal is the nircmd method.  If you run the script with Scroll Lock off then the Scroll Lock indicator LED on the keyboard should serve as the mute indicator.  This gives another visual cue to go with the system tray speaker icon with the line through it.

Here is the script

Edit:  The GetKeyState addition should sync the state of ScrollLock and the volume muting on script startup.

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. ;
  2. ; any other settings here
  3. ;
  4. ; sync ScrollLock LED and volume muting on script start
  5. ;
  6. If (GetKeyState("ScrollLock","T"))
  7.   Run, nircmd mutesysvolume 1
  8. else
  9.   Run, nircmd mutesysvolume 0
  10.
  11. ; Global Hotkey
  12. ;
  13. ~ScrollLock::
  14.    Run, nircmd mutesysvolume 2
  15. return

The tilde('~') character stops AHK from "eating" the keystroke.  This way the Scroll Lock LED should toggle as you press the key and mute/unmute the volume.  To avoid lighting the LED just delete the tilde.

To access nircmd from anywhere on your system it is recommended to copy it to the Windows directory.  If that is undesirable then copy the executable to a directory in your Path.

Thanks for the information.  :)  I see that as of today, 2016-03-20, it's on a 10th anniversary sale at 50% regular price.

Cool.  For those mainly interested in bypassing the Start Screen I believe that feature is also in the Free version.

I had a giveaway for Start Menu X Pro.  The "skip start screen" feature never worked.  Recently GOTD had a giveaway of Start Menu 10 by the same publisher.  At least on my Laptop running Windows 8.0 the "skip start screen" feature works consistently.

Also it is slightly different than Start Menu X in appearance.  I like it better.  I think the skip start screen is not limited to the Pro edition.  So it should work on the freebie if anyone wants to check it out.

It should pop up on another giveaway site soon.
