Note that InfoLayout is available on Bits Du Jour today (May 11, 2008), and I wanted to see about buying it.  This is a result of my evaluation.

thanks for that wraith808

N.A.N.Y. Challenge 2007 / Re: WorkCoach - v0.8.0 - January 24, 2007
« Last post by tomos on May 09, 2008, 02:44 PM »
I do not know if anyone (especially the author :) ) reads this thread anymore?

I would like to request a feature (or a minor modification, really)... In order to measure my average productivity when actually working I have come up with an Excel sheet that nicely calculates my output and gives results. Unfortunately, if there are any distractions (and with a small kid in the house there are many!), I have to „mark” the beginning and the end of the idle period, so that only the time I am really working is counted. This is quite inconvenient, that is why WorkCoach would come in so handy. However, at this time I have to put in the WorkCoach value manually, which is not that convenient.

It would be much better if the Excel sheet could access a file with WC data. As they are saved anyway, all it would take would be to save the logs every minute (or every five minutes, if the overhead is too large)...

have you tried TitleLog ?
depending on how [you] work it might be helpful - it records all windows AND idle time but it's up to you to figure out which projects (if any) they relate to

General Software Discussion / Re: Verifying if an email has been spoofed
« Last post by tomos on May 07, 2008, 01:00 PM »
I was searching the forum for topics about signing/verification of email and I came across this post, unanswered. I have recently set up my primary email addresses with GPG, so here's my advice. By a mile, using Thunderbird with its Enigmail extension is the simplest and least painstaking way of implementing email signing. I cannot offer advice outside these two applications, though i should be able to answer any basic questions you have. Perhaps the quickest way to get started with Thunderbird and Enigmail would be to follow their Quick Start Guide. I didn't use it, but it seems to be very clear-cut and complete.

Hope this helps, Ehtyar.

thanks Ehtyar - will check that out

I'm visiting a friend who is reconnecting to the netz after a long time
(a year and a half & they only had dial up before that)
I'm wondering in order to bring their XP uptodate do ye think that SP3 would be the best option?

Forgive me for being just a little off topic, but Denke's letter reminded me of HowTo Get Telephone Marketers Off Your Back. It is an entire book, for sale, but the essence has been extracted into this single page counterscript:

hmm I wonder is context menu hard
We were referring to hard as in hard-coded, and no, it is not hard-coded.  No rudeness implied.  :)
no we wasn't ;D
and I suspect it's not easily available cause it's difficult to do as Carol suggests

hmm I wonder is context menu hard

Again a hotkey controlled one from jgpaiva,
A very simple hotkey though, Alt+D - (can be changed as well) so unfortunately prob not what you want
Shows date and time but can be very easily changed to just show date (e.g. I removed seconds)

it's definitely CH&S - it shows up as CH&S when I alt+tab

---------------------------
Error..
---------------------------
DBISAM Engine Error # 11949 SQL parsing error - Expected NULL, Date, Time, or Timestamp expression but instead found '0000-00-00 03:22:57.500 AM' in UPDATE SQL statement at line 1, column 130
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

noticed the time has changed, otherwise the same
it did seem to happen one day when I trying to paste in a web page
could it possibly be clashing with SQLNotes - wild guess simply cause of the "SQL parsing error" and also cause SQLN has html notes pane

Problem is the error warnings are always behind everything else (& I usually keep a full screen) so I've no idea when they happened

Been having a few problems on occasion with CH&S - ctrl+alt+v brings nothing for quite a few seconds, 10 or more, I've given up at that stage.. & pressed it twice or 3 times first :) it comes up later unexpectedly

I just discovered an application sandbox program called Sandboxie http://www.sandboxie.com/.  It allows you to run programs in a virtual sandbox but without the full overhead of running a PC virtualization environment like VMware.  While the program runs, it'll still be able to read from your files if you set it to, but it will not be able to write or modify any files as well as the registry (it will think it has, but it really hasn't).

General Software Discussion / Re: Xara Xtreme 4 and Pro 4 released
« Last post by tomos on April 25, 2008, 05:11 AM »
I am sad that there have been no new vector tools in any of the last major updates, Inkscape, Corel and Illustrator all have vector tools that Xara does not, but I do still stick with Xara for all my design needs, because the user interface is still second to none - it is just so darned fast and intuitive.

I'm still sticking like glue to FreeHand but one of these days I'm going to have to move on...

Dissappointed to hear the first half there ("no new vector tools"),
but the "user interface is still second to none" sounds interesting and that it's fast is big plus - last time I tried illustrator it was like a slug to FreeHands hare, if you work on lots of files it can be painful waiting for illustrator to ... open ... save...

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: QuickNote Add???
« Last post by tomos on April 24, 2008, 12:58 PM »
What if i added a kind of reduced functionality quick-add clip feature.  When triggered it just lets you paste in some text, and it copies this text to the clipboard and adds it to the recent clips group.  So basically it's just a really quick and dirty way to add a clip to the list.  Maybe with checkbox to flag it as a favorite.

if you're pasting it it should already be in the recent clips group from just having copied it (?) - presuming CH&S is running
I wouldnt want the favourite option either - it would be nice to keep it seperate, keep favourites from getting cluttered.
Maybe with checkbox to flag it as a Note?

or as Tekzel suggests

... a new top level folder called "Notes", I would love to be able to select that as the home for QuickNotes, then when I add one it goes in there by default.

General Software Discussion / Re: Verifying if an email has been spoofed
« Last post by tomos on April 24, 2008, 08:29 AM »
If you make a habit of digitally signing your emails, spoofs are easier to detect.

any recommendations for how & where or a site that might be helpful in that direction?
had a look found a few summaries that were helpful for general understanding
e.g.
The process for creating, obtaining, and using keys is fairly straightforward:

   1. Generate a key using software such as PGP, which stands for Pretty Good Privacy, or GnuPG, which stands for GNU Privacy Guard.

   2. Increase the authenticity of your key by having your key signed by co-workers or other associates who also have keys. In the process of signing your key, they will confirm that the fingerprint on the key you sent them belongs to you. By doing this, they verify your identity and indicate trust in your key.

   3. Upload your signed key to a public key ring so that if someone gets a message with your signature, they can verify the digital signature.

   4. Digitally sign your outgoing email messages. Most email clients have a feature to easily add your digital signature to your message.

but something with a bit more detail would be helpful (public key ring :-\)

I'm wondering:-

1) is it associated with a particular email address
2) could it cause any problems in terms of people accessing emails (from me .. if i were to use it :))

Living Room / Re: Low-cost Laptop cheat sheet
« Last post by tomos on April 24, 2008, 08:14 AM »
In Europe, for example, the marketplace has gotten too regulated for this to happen. The governments in Europe are squeezing the small vendors out for the benefit of the big companies and retailers. It's a sad story.

? that true ? :-\ (I have no idea even though I live in "Europe")

I've seen some pretty cheap laptops on offer here in the last couple months
If you convert from euro to $ they wont seem cheap but in "real" terms based on earnings here they are cheap
mind you average wages around here have been taking a knocking the last couple years too but I guess that's another story...

perhaps taking things a bit off topic... :-\

Perhaps people should try OpenDNS. I use it and DC works fine for me!

it's a case of everything gets routed through "OpenDNS" ?

what are the advantages of that (apart from being able to block sites)
they only have one server in europe - not trying to be negative :)  just curious ... and commenting

OpenDNS makes money the same way Google and Yahoo do — by showing relevant ads when we show you search results
seems fair enough - do they have their own search page or do they add them to other search pages?
