or there's PC Tools AV - [an opinion please!]
not much info in that thread there but it sounds like an option - I installed it lately on someones laptop (after having to use their restore CD because of a virus) & havent heard any complaints since which isnt exactly a recommendation - but definitely no complaint :)

I thought someone else recommended it in another thread but couldnt find...

Until I stumbled upon t-clock which is free and was upgraded to Win64bit compatibility and is now maintained by stoic joker, who hangs out here at the DC forums.  It works perfectly and I love it :)

That link doesn't work.

it worked last night so must be a problem with site

« Last post by tomos on May 16, 2008, 03:51 PM »
It's scientifically proven/accepted that humans remember a sequence of somewhere between 7-10 "things" (numbers, words, etc.) so a 4 digit PIN shouldn't be that hard.

maybe it depends how many you want to remember, & prob (- definitely :) ) how often you use them...
living away from home (abroad) I have quite a number of very long telephone numbers in my head,
but I know if I had to write them - as opposed to dialing them, I'd have problems with some where I'd have no problems dialing them ...

my partner remembers numbers very well but she actively associates the numbers with something (anything) which seems to help a lot

What I am saying that as long as there is no resistance to such inhumaine practices of goverments, goverments will push and ask for more

1,2,3, all together now: NO, NO, NO, to all that *stuff*  ;)

but I just love all those preset (i.e. made by others, in particular jgpaiva) options -
window #1 takes two-thirds of the screen, window #2 takes the other third, or 3/4 or whatever...this way, that way ...
I'm a fan of powerpro but only use it fairly basically, but I think in this case, I suspect its worth running the other app = gridmove !

I only wish that firefox would improve upon their Bookmarks Manager or make an add-on that allowed for better link management. I find it hard to believe that when i do a text search for one of my links, it finds the link so i know it exists, but it doesn't show you what folder it's currently sitting in. :-\

hi too hairball !
dont need to synch at the mo, but if i do..

I've struggled a bit with ff bookmarks, now I just use the FARR ff plugin & save the bookmarks with a word in there somewhere that'll make sense to me later, & dont bother segregrating it into folders - mind you, if you're saving a huge amount of stuff that probably doesnt help that much in terms of organisation...

[but FF sure dont help much in terms of organisation as you say]

Another tray clock I've used for years is LClock by Ying Han found on neowin.com - has a calendar that pops up on a left click - can be customize - small and neat

I thought the problem with LClock was that it doesnt show the date (only the time?)
I remember liking it a lot but not even installing it cause of that (or was it that it doesnt show the day :-\)

I *think* I once asked SoftMaker about updating my Ashampoo Office at their site and was told they would have nothing to do with it; it was not their product. But tomos is making me wonder if I remember correctly.

I bought Ashampoo Office 2006 and upgraded to the 2008 version
I've gotten a good few mails at this stage from SoftMaker offering an upgrade from Ashampoo Office 2008 to SoftMaker Office 2008
for, I think, 20something euros (which probably means nearer €30 :) )

It's possible they refused to upgrade you from Ashampoo Office 2006 to SoftMaker Office 2008 ...
9591
- I think you should go for the Softmaker original, because it will be updated much more often than Ashampoo's version.

as far as I know you can use the softmaker updates - I've done it once at any rate - but you have to go find them (as you say ashampoo doesnt update so often as the original)

I think it's okay to pass on this Ashampoo link (?)
Name the price! - You name the price!

[of course there's no guarantee they'll accept your price but we could see who get's what cheapest :D ]

General Software Discussion / Re: SCRIBUS - Open Source Desktop Publishing
« Last post by tomos on May 13, 2008, 09:23 AM »
OK - Here's the $64,000 question:

Would anyone use Scribus for production? (Or, is it used in real production? i.e. Not a high school news letter.)

I've used Quark, InDesign and a few other programs in the past. They all worked, but a DTP app? Open source and free? That's a lot of work. Especially to get right.

I suppose you could print plates first then check/test them, but that still runs you a pretty penny. (I've seen the tiniest of errors cost a lot of money in publishing.)

I'm interested in that app... Sounds pretty good, but I'd like to find out opinions before I bother looking at it in depth.

bout a year & a half on from your questions ... an answer could be helpful to someone maybe :)

well, I'm just researching it again & came across this

Final Checks

Scribus has a Pre-Flight Verifier to examine your documents and look for problems before they reach the production line. With PDF files, I also recommend you put it to one more test. This is especially important for large production runs at a third-party print shop.

Scribus documentation and its Wiki suggest several on-line PDF-checking tools. I use PDF City at http://www.pdfcity.com/index.htm. By using its pre-flight inspection system, you will gain clues to potential printing problems before the printer does. PDF City provides this as a free service and gives any error details in a user-friendly format.
...
I'm impressed by this program. Being open source, it has room to grow with continued input and direction from users. The feature set is robust, and I feel confident recommending it to most small- to medium-size businesses with average to advanced publishing needs.

that's a pretty definite recommendation!

General Software Discussion / Re: Your fav' audio CD burner?
« Last post by tomos on May 13, 2008, 03:48 AM »
What do I get for my girlfriend or parents? They want to do all the usual stuff - burn discs, rip movies and music, make photo dvd's and albums etc. Roxio/Nero suites are designed for people like them. But should I tell them to install these bloated monstrosities on their pc (which is not as fast or recent as mine anyway)?

I would have said Ashampoo in terms of ease of use but also I'm not sure can it do all you want
and this from Carol -

I know this isn't audio related but I have started using Nero 7 again having had a lot of problems with coasters from Dual Layer DVDs. Nero seems to burn them consistently whereas I have had a few issues with ImgBurn and AShampoo Burning Suite.

Having said that I was very selective on how I reinstalled Nero - just the BurningROM and a few associated tools - none of the video stuff.

there's surely other canditates?
CDBurnerXP ?  I dont use it cause I could never get multisession to work properly but if I remember correctly the new version is easy to use (& free, but again I'm not sure how much it does..)

One of the best 404 pages was on a web design website, where you get an entire article on good 404 pages :)
Must get the link, it was full of good screenies.

Although the 2 i got from LT and flickr were probably the "timed out" messages

I think you'll find it or something similar in this thread
404 - Page Not Found
or,
the irresistably titled
Nothing to see here :/

N.A.N.Y. Challenge 2007 / Re: WorkCoach - v0.8.0 - January 24, 2007
« Last post by tomos on May 09, 2008, 02:44 PM »
I do not know if anyone (especially the author :) ) reads this thread anymore?

I would like to request a feature (or a minor modification, really)... In order to measure my average productivity when actually working I have come up with an Excel sheet that nicely calculates my output and gives results. Unfortunately, if there are any distractions (and with a small kid in the house there are many!), I have to „mark” the beginning and the end of the idle period, so that only the time I am really working is counted. This is quite inconvenient, that is why WorkCoach would come in so handy. However, at this time I have to put in the WorkCoach value manually, which is not that convenient.

It would be much better if the Excel sheet could access a file with WC data. As they are saved anyway, all it would take would be to save the logs every minute (or every five minutes, if the overhead is too large)...

have you tried TitleLog ?
depending on how [you] work it might be helpful - it records all windows AND idle time but it's up to you to figure out which projects (if any) they relate to
