Living Room / Re: Five Reasons Why People Hate Apple
« Last post by Renegade on August 08, 2010, 06:35 AM »
As the author notes, however, a key point is how Apple -- and its followers -- respond to the ordinary criticism that other companies have encountered. Apple and Steve Jobs choose to respond with threats, lawsuits, bluster, cutting off media access, among other embarrassing recent problems (such as how to hold the phone in a magical way that it doesn't drop calls). Apple invites further criticism if it doesn't step up and do right by its customers, no matter how fanatical or zealous.
It seems as though the arrogance that Apple fans are prone to starts at the company.
-alivingspirit (August 07, 2010, 09:53 PM)

Hahahaha~!

Nice observation! :D

I think that is the beginning of the hatred. Nobody like a condescending <insert profanity of choice> ranting on them. The backlash is nothing if not well deserved.

At least I'll give them credit for giving up on projects that don't work. Don't waste the time or money.
Unlike Microsoft, eh?

So it is time to for a "WAVE Goodbye"   :eusa_boohoo:

Hey! Microsoft had the decency to kill Microsoft Bob. :P

Living Room / Microsoft Security Patch Pushed Early
« Last post by Renegade on August 05, 2010, 09:25 PM »
Earlier this week, Microsoft released Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-046, which is the patch to fix this particular vulnerability. This "out of band" patch came a full week before the regularly scheduled update, due to concern for customers' security. Everyone who has Automatic Updates turned on will already have the patch installed and their system is secured against this particular threat. The only people who need be concerned are those who check for updates manually and those who are still running Windows 2000 or XP Service Pack 2 or earlier, as they are no longer supported by Microsoft.

MS10-046

I got that in one of the security newsletter that I subscribe to. I'm posting it here as it shows how the Microsoft of 1998 is very different from the Microsoft of today. They still can't manage to change their image though... I just don't get it.

I absolutely do NOT hate Apple. They make good products. Unfortunately, they are far too overpriced for what I am paying for. The amount of functionality lost compared to that gained is not justifiable in the additional costs.

That said, I do hate fanboys and zealots, of any product for that matter. I absolutely despise being told that a mac "just works" when more and more that is proven to be far from the case as userbase increases. I am sick of being told by a co-worker that he bought his dad a mac and now "I receive no more support calls". I absolutely cannot stand the smugness with which Steve Jobs operates and works. Take the iPhone4 fiasco, he could have just been a man and admitted a problem rather than drag 4 other phone manufacturers into it. I really do hope that litigation is brought against him for that little act.

I am fairly certain that, at least my first point, is felt by quite a few people. There is nothing worse than someone trying to sell you something that you A. have expressed no interest in learning about or possibly pursuing, B. Legitimately cannot afford, and C. is sold in a manner that says "You will be cool if you use this" or "You will now be in high society". It reminds me too much of organized religion or those door-to-door people who try and push "The watchtower" on my family. They assume that because they found something so great and useful in their lives, that everyone must know and be interested in the same.

This level of fanaticism does not limit itself to Apple. The group of *nix/OSS (Notice the lack of F/OSS, this is because many users assume that OSS == free) is far deeper in their level of fanaticism. There are Microsoft fanatics, ford fanatics, toaster fanatics, you name it, there is a fanatic for it. Let people use what they like. Do not try and push something on me that I did not ask you about. And most of all, DO NOT blow smoke up my @#! by telling me how your product is "all that and a bag of chips". I learned long ago that you trade one evil for another no matter which decision you make.

</rant>

+1,000

Except that I do hate Apple a little. (My rage after they switched their SDK license right after I spent $2,500 on an iMac is subsiding now... 4 months later.)

I think the main reason for a lot of hatred there is due to the zealots.

There's nothing worse than having a perfectly good system working for you, then having some self-righteous zealot come along and start preaching a sermon on just how stupid you are for using that perfectly good system, and that if you don't convert to his religion, you'll burn for eternity. The level of condescension in a lot of fanboy zealots is simply incompatible with not being a <insert profanity here />.

That is only compounded by zealot claims of counterfactuals. e.g.

Given X (reality)
If -X, you're an idiot (fanboy assertion)
--------------------
You're an idiot. (fanboy conclusion)

(See here or here.)

It's enough to drive you mad, in both senses of the word.

Having the same drivel

Apple makes some wonderful interfaces (iTunes not one of them), and does a fantastic job of design. There's nothing to hate there. They're gorgeous.

As for *nix/OSS fanatics, I think that they are an entirely different case. They aren't "dismissable" like Apple zealots are. I mean the *nix/OSS fanatics that actually have a grip on things, and not the wannabes that are just cheap followers.

The mode of information communication and access to computing power will be increasingly important moving forward. While I primarily use Windows, I am very glad that there is a very strong OSS / GNU GPL / Linux / FOSS community and movement. I see the GNU GPL philosophy as a necessary balance. They truly serve a purpose.

Apple zealots on the other hand do not serve a purpose. There is no underlying philosophy or rationality behind them. Considering the way Apple treats its customers and developers (compared to other companies), there's every reason to be repulsed by them.

Bah... I need to get to work...

Wow, those 5 reasons sure are pathetic, apart from the last one and maybe the 3rd. WTF is up with the 4th one? Typical Apple bashing here.

I think he's trying to bash "Apple haters", and not Apple.

Oh Christ... The guy's a complete ass. It's nothing more than link-bait drivel.

Here's the overall summary:

If you hate Apple for any reason, you're an insecure little wanker.

But if you're one of the people having problems with the iPhone, or with any other Apple device or service, then I don't blame you for hating Apple. But you're still a wanker.

His own summary:

Raging against Apple censorship is just a cheap way to make you feel brave. You really want to be a freedom fighter? Go argue with the mullahs in Tehran. Until then, take off your Che Guevera beret and stop congratulating yourself.

Apple haters fall into five overall categories. Which one do you fit in? Did I miss one? Leave an inarticulate, angry comment below.

Like I said... Link-baiting troll.

A couple of academics have now weighed in with a formal paper describing Apple worship as a religion.
Well, Satanism is some kind of a religion, too.

Yeah, but Apple is *actually* twisted & evil. :P

One thing I would like is the ability to users to have their own encryption key on their devices, and disallow the seller to hold the key. Making it impossible to install anything without the user consent.

Think of it like this. If you own a house, you have the key and not whoever sold you the house. If you own a car, you have the key, the dealer does not have it. Then why when you buy a phone, the seller have the key and you not?

Another thing I would like to see (as phones are computers now) is the ability to choice an operating system to put on.

As for other companies doing the same. Is like defending a wife beater just because someone else also beats his wife.

+1

Except for the part about choosing an OS. Yes and no there. When you create hardware, especially for mobile devices, you have to consider the OS that will be on there. Very often the OS is directly tied to the hardware. Now, this isn't 100% necessary, but it helps increase the user experience a LOT. Eventually mobile platforms may reach the level of Linux and Windows where you have options.

However, in principle, yeah! It would be very cool to say something like, "I want an iPhone, but I want Android on it."

In an attempt to respark a good debate, I would like to bring up the recent actions of Apple with regards to iOS and their software in general. With the recent hit on Apple for it's fiasco with the iPhone4 and software causing "decreased signal strength", I would like to ask how the folks here at DoCo feel about Apple's stance on such issues?

[irrational hatred]Apple... Grrr...[/irrational hatred]

Now, setting aside my irrational hatred for a company run by an irrational jackass, and worshipped by a bunch of other irrational retards...

Oooops... Missed the irrational hatred tags there... Oh well.

iPhone 4 has a definite problem in their hardware, but the underlying OS is very good. Heck. It's BSD, and BSD is simply about the best for a solid TCP/IP stack, so +1 for it anyways.

My problem with Apple is their licensing and their agreements. It's NOT the computer that's the problem. It's the business aspect of the computer. The company is run by a religious tyrant who is nothing short of sinister.

This is a portion of the license email that I send out to people:

Your license code is just for you, and you may use it on multiple computers if you use different computers as long as they are for your own use.

There is such a thing as being decent to people and treating your customers with some trust and respect.

Apple has failed there. Their products are broken not because of the products themselves, but because of how they are licensed.

I am not an OS zealot. I am not a computer language zealot. I am not a technology zealot. However, I am a "decency" zealot. (And hence my irrational hatred for Apple.)

While I do not use much GPL software, I am very glad that it is available. It's a good thing.

I don't use *NIX much as I do primarily Windows programming.

Microsoft treats their developers with much more respect than Apple treats theirs. "Developers? Who needs them? They work for Apple". What does that tell you about Apple and the Apple corporate mentality?

I am a zealot when it comes to supporting decent companies and products. I could list a huge number of software titles that I use and regularly rave about because they are so good. Similarly with a few companies. I can't say much positive about Apple.

That Apple has been so deceitful with their iPhone 4 problems only shows what kind of a company they are, and what the people behind it are like. This is in stark contrast to other companies that admit their errors and try to fix them. The most obvious being Microsoft as they end up with more problems publicly than anyone else.

Apple has shamed itself. "Use duct tape." or "Get a $30 bumper." or "We'll give our idiot users a free bumper." Really? Oh wow Steve, you're soooo generous and kind. Please bend over for a kiss... <puke color="rainbow" sound="loud" />

Sigh... In short, Apple is simply being Apple. "They can do no wrong..."

Well, I suppose I'll be chastised (flamed is it?) for this, yet my misspent youth and the anarchistic force in me insists I speak up. I'll make it brief: It's time to burn and loot.

the APP store pirates of the world have done a magnificent job of changing the thinking of a generation, and at the same time performed their public relations legerdemain of hiding the truth. If those who believe the internet, the WWW, the frequency spectrum, DOES NOT belong to corporations that simply declare their size dictates ownership, do not begin now to make a noise that reverberates for decades, kiss donation coding good bye.  Hasta la vista freeware.

Called for above is my philosophy of go big or go away...don't JUST burn...don't JUST loot. However with experience and age and a few wounded causes comes respect for reality. You still need to keep up a fight with many many short jabs and an occasional knockout punch.  Keep in mind the other side is trying the same thing.

You still need to go BIG, but from the inside. And that's my thesis.  I'll leave the specifics to you as to how to go about keeping the next generation of coders from selling out.

Well, if you're looking for it, I might as well start. ;)

It'll never happen. The moment someone gives up a profitable market because of some principle, someone else without that principle will step in. Apple has a non-stop flow of enough content to their store that they don't need to worry. And they know it will never stop.

Basically, it's like people dropping money on the ground -- someone will pick it up.

Oh, in other news... Google is running to China for forgiveness... they want to do business there now... Sound familiar?
9593
So this explains why people pay five prices for Apple's heroin, er, products!

Actually, there's a difference there that makes people buy in droves. It's more like this...

Stop being a wannabe loser and join the cool kidz today by getting your NEW iWhatever today for the incredible price of not $599.00, not even $999.00, but for the amazing price of only $2,999.00! We'll even include a $4,999.00 tag so you can brag!

Or something like that. :P

It applies to all 'wireless telephone handsets'. Apple are just the ones getting the bad press :D

And deservedly so. They're the only ones that go very far out of their way to truly make life impossible for anyone that wants to do more, or wants a bit of freedom. Windows Mobile is infinitely more open than the iPhone. What does that say?
