Living Room / Re: Desktop Linux: The dream is dead
« Last post by mahesh2k on November 09, 2010, 09:50 AM »
Well linux stopped attracting me when major software corps didn't came up with any paid software so far. There are very few paid apps for linux and i guess too much clutter in license and open-source issue is the reason behind it. Besides that if OS is free, how come many customers are going to pay me for building custom apps for them (i came across many such people who think like this i.e. why pay for apps if OS is free ?). Consultancy, maintenance, support will not sustain the developers business(atleast solo developer will have hard time).

General Software Discussion / Re: SMF or phpBB... that is the question?

VB and IPB are too much cluttered with social media buttons and other features. Vb and ipb are paid forums, but you get what you paid for.

PunBB is used by many content sites like squidoo, hubpages etc because of its simplicity. It's fast, easy to use and clutter-free like vanilla. There isn't any ajax based thread posting or member update like in vanilla so you have to add these using extensions if you want.

FluxBB is easy to configure, lots of themes available or you can create from scratch(which is much better). FluxBB and PunBB have a lot of features installed by default in comparison to vanilla. Advanced electron forum is very easy to install but has less features than fluxxbb, punbb and vanilla. AEF is yet to catch other forum softwares in terms of features. I have very limited experience with these three when it comes to security- so not sure about their security side.

Edit: This is link to forum software reviews, much better take on security.

Few more suggestions if you're interested -

1. FluxxBB
2. PunBB
3. Advanced Electron Forum

These three can replace phpbb in my opinion. I'm more biased towards first two.

Developer's Corner / Re: Is "easy" learning a valid (quality) experience?
« Last post by mahesh2k on November 07, 2010, 02:42 AM »
Maybe slightly tangent reply to what you guys are discussing. One way to look at this is : code reuse. You can't waste your time inventing same things over and over in different way. We wasted a lot of time in development by making monopoly in what we do to give it feel of uniqueness and forgot about important points like - reuse, invent wheel argument etc. These days because of open source -software industry is improved as they reuse code. Now that you wish to re-use so you prefer to learn from blocks rather than from scratch. This approach works when you want to get things done but when you want to do particular thing in dedicated manner in that case 'easy' learning approach is similar to band-aid.

Phpbb has lot of security issues in comparison to vanila, smf. smf is rarely updating these days, version 2 is taking close to 3 yrs of public release.

vanila requires lot of plugins to operate but its easy to design, simple and clutter free.

I guess tools like prefuse or some flash data visualization software is used for this. Prefuse get you similar looks, and so with flash.

Mouser, i found one post where company automattic (wordpress owners) make money on opensource model.

http://www.labnol.or...ss-makes-money/7576/

if programmers can no longer make a living from creating software that is ok -- they can always get consulting jobs if they need money.
You can't earn money to run a call center, support and developer company with ONLY  consulting and this is surefire way of ripping off any business. Not every company is automattic or mozilla to earn money from consulting/software.

Do check these points where GPL kills commercial side of software:

http://www.gnu.org/l...DoesTheGPLAllowMoney

If I distribute GPL'd software for a fee, am I required to also make it available to the public without a charge?

No. However, if someone pays your fee and gets a copy, the GPL gives them the freedom to release it to the public, with or without a fee. For example, someone could pay your fee, and then put her copy on a web site for the general public.
]

So in short if you write software and released it under GPL, any of your customer can get a copy and is free to redistribute in any way they see fit without any strings attached from your side. It may look good for softwares like wordpress, firefox but is it possible for other business to use this same model to make profit ? NO.

Established business can make money with such model but any newcomer in software business will not make money with this that is for sure.

More stuff to read:

Attempt to clarify GPL issue in wordpress:

http://aliciaweller....ners-and-developers/

http://www.gnu.org/l...reSourcePostedPublic

I'm still skeptical about business model with GPL.

Aussies took objection on AVP-multiplayer this spring season. On games like GTA i can understand any objection like violence etc. But AVP is worthy of ban ? I mean seriously, kids can easily differentiate between killing aliens to provoked violence in GTA.

Developer's Corner / Re: The Fear of Programming
« Last post by mahesh2k on October 31, 2010, 02:35 AM »
That's quite interesting but, if you code for a living, fear doesn't come into it.

When you code for living, emotions like customer expectations, design, deadline puts fear into your mind. Fear is always there in some another form.

I'm curious whether there is conclusive evidence that the "scraped" sites that have Google ads on them are higher ranked because of the ads, or because they *aggregate* content from other sites.

Yousaytoo.com, and similar other autoblogs fetch content from member blogs to earn money from google adsense. Scraper sites aka autoblogs do run google adsense and earn lot of bucks. You can check the rank of sites like yousaytoo, and similar other autoblogs(scraper sites).

I download animes from torrent softwares/sites and never got any virus or malware from it. Torrent gives you option to see file format before you download it. These videos have .rmvb extension to it and as i download it from trusted subtitle makers group there is no chance of virus/malware.

I use utorrent to download anime (bleach to be precise). Why ? because there is no way i can get this anime in my country. It took 10 years to reach DragonballZ to hit television channels in india. I'm still waiting for the DVD's so you can see that torrents are heaven for those who like animes. Tite kubo (who writes bleach anime) has no issue with the distribution of this anime. I don't think everyone has issue against torrent distribution. Sad to see limewire going down.

Python is good for starters. If you want to get into web development then i suggest jumping to PHP instead of ASP or JSP. Have fun.

Nice find :)

They have wordpress mu installed for free users. Looks good to me. If they allow shell access in web page like this and support ROR/Python then i'm going to switch to that service. Bandwidth and hard disk space prices looks cheap to me. I mean it is much more competitive than hostgator.
