Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Super Flexible File Synchronizer Mini-Review

Thanks Armando - I had missed that post by Tom.

Well, I found the forum but it is a bitch to register for it. I think they can kiss my...  you get the thought. Damn thing wants ALL your personal info: address phone number, etc. Bull! Tells me I can fill any fields I don’t wish to complete with the correct number of ######, but it keeps returning asking for a valid phone number. And it clears the password and a few other fields each time. Hate that with a passion! And since it is a dynamic form the Lazarus extension doesn’t work on it.

Why the hell does a software support forum need my address and phone number? Intrusive crap!

A little ranting tonight, yes?   :P

I'm currently trying SFFS as I find syncback a bit slow...

Although, after 2 days of testing, I really find that the syncback interface is much much better : offers more flexibility, options etc (the grid showing all backups offers a much clearer view of what needs to be backed up, when, etc. and all backup jobs can be sorted through their different fields, etc.). Only problem : no delta backup... Which is stupid, considering the demand. So, basically, 3 the main features I'm interrested in in SFFS are the "partial file updating", the versioning and the "real time" backup.

A backup software needs to be rock solid -- backup problems completely defeats the security purpose of the software. Unfortunately, in my tests, I  experienced something very strange (I'll post this in the SFFS forum  later but I wanted to try here first, in the community I know best !). But it could be me. I really wonder what I'm doing wrong.

(Red and Bold emphasis is mine)

OK, you got me... what SFFS forum? I didn't know there was such a forum! Is there truly an SFFS forum? Would be nice!

Thanks!

Oh - I thought he meant "e.g. Tiddly-Wiki" as synonymous with Dropbox instead of a journal. It would work fine WRT Dropbox, though I have no idea how well Tiddly-Wiki would handle it.

Since both are free why wouldn’t you try it instead of inquiring here about it? Won't cost you anything!

If your Journal involves "dirty little secrets", or really any information that you wouldn’t want to share with the world, then do not post it on ANY journal app online! Especially if it is a "free" service. Let's face it - they are going to try and find a way to make money from the site and many of these sites start out offering "private" content but sooner or later they change their privacy settings and often reset yours to some degree of "public" or "sharing" mode. Happened to me with Vox and I also had correspondence with LiveJournal over similar tactics.

If it is private, and you want it to stay that way, then keep it locally... not online!

Thank you.

Hi Armando!

This is a little too weird but I am also on the X1 forum right now when the email arrived notifying me of your post about X1. I am also looking hard at it again to see if I want to buy the latest Pro version. I have NO true search engine installed now, except Search Everything and of course Windows 7 desktop search. You know, I had WDS set to index the content of all my drives and when I looked earlier tonight - because my searches weren't finding very much - and my indexing settings had changed to file names only plus it was only indexing two of my drives. I am not sure when or how the settings changed; I imagine it had to have been done by a recent Windows Update, as I didn't change the settings. That is what caused me to take another look at X1.

I'll post back and let you know what I decide to do. I liked X1 before but declined to update about two years ago. Now I miss the ability to search for content.

Take care,

Jim

Sooo... Which term is proper to describe what most ISPs are currently placing a cap on? E.g., my ISP - Comcast - tells me there is a bandwidth cap of 250 GB/month. They also advise that customers who download a lot of movies use a tremendous amount of bandwidth. Is that a true statement? And if so, is that because they use a lot of data transfer speed? Or because of the amount of data being downloaded?

Thank you.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9

Thanks 4wd. I think it must have been longer than that because that was shown to me back in 2007 when I purchased DOpus. I sent an email to support asking about it and was given a link directly to that or a very similar clause. I just purchased a single license plus a USB export license back then.

Thanks!

Directory Opus 9

Opus licensing is easy and simple. It is machine-based not user-based.
Purchase an Install Licence for each machine on which you install the program

This license is only valid for the 9.xy branch launched at April 27th 2007,
currently there is 9.5.4 recent from June 3rd 2010. See http://www.gpsoft.com.au/History.html
There will be an discounted upgrade to Directory Opus 10.

USB and FTP cost $10 AUD extra each. See https://www.gpsoft.c...u/DScripts/order.asp

Unless the licensing has changed you are permitted to install DOpus on one main computer and one portable/notebook computer with the single license.

I purchased this in September 2007 so that is three years and a whole lot of updates, some fairly major, without any additional cost. I feel like I have gotten my money's worth!

Thanks!

Jim

Brahman,

That is not what "trial version" means. I understand that you aren't the developer so I am not aiming this at you, but a trial version is exactly how it sounds: a version that you can use for a trial period to see if the software will work as you need/want it to for your needs. I have never heard of a trial that is only to check compatibility with your hardware - though that is certainly a valid test to try during the trial/evaluation period. A reasonable trial, IMO, would be to allow the software to function fully either for a limited amount of time or a limited number of scans. I would understand if the developer didn't want to make it time-bound only because someone might be able to scan their entire project during the trial period. So he might want to instead limit the trial to X number of scans and then inactivate the trial. But to allow potential users to scan but also watermark it is a little heavy. Of course that is only my personal opinion.

Thanks!

Jim

BTW, I did install the trial yesterday but I haven't tried scanning anything yet.

Hi Perry!

I just downloaded the latest build; I'll give it the once-over and post back with any comments.

BTW, I was looking at your blog - is FarrCfx the same as ContactsFX? Or is it simply another UI for ContactsFX? (I am so easily confused!!

Thanks!

Brahman,

Thanks again for the tips and hints. I don’t know that sorting them by the same size is doable. There are a lot of different sizes and some family members have given me prints that look as if someone may have trimmed them to fit somewhere at some time. Plus I am trying to keep them together by family/generation because I have to store them that way so I can easily return them after scanning. In case you haven't guessed I have become the unofficial family history researcher and family tree keeper for the family!

But I will surely try all that you suggest. I never suspected that such a scanning software - independent of that which comes with the hardware - even existed! I'll download the trial and if it makes my scanning project even a little more efficient than what I am presently doing then I will surely purchase the Pro version.

Thank you.

Jim

Brahman,

When you say "film" do you mean the negatives? I don’t have these. Most are old - very old - photos from various extended family members that I have borrowed for scanning. Most are from early 20th century but many are from the 19th century (1800's). None came with the negatives. I have no choice but to scan the photo prints I have.

Sounding like I might have to stick with my Canons after all unfortunately.

Thanks!

Jim

Very nice review! Thank you very much for this.

One question about VueScan: Can it auto-detect and scan/crop multiple photos on a scanner bed? My previous HP AIO's had this feature but it never worked well. The Canon PIXMA AIO's I am now using do this very well. I still have a few thousand old family photos to scan and can't possibly do it scanning one at a time!

Thanks!

Renegade,

One potential problem: PayPal fees. PayPal isn't in this for the fun of it. When you make PayPal payments to a developer that developer is paying a fee for the convenience. Payments among friends or family members are free of fees but businesses pay the way with PayPal. While that kind of system might make sense for regular software developers and other online businesses, small coders taking micropayments would get eaten alive by fees I would think.

WinRAR here also. I'm another earlier purchaser and it has never disappointed me in all these years.

Ahh, so sorry! Having received that email a short time ago and then seeing the sale, I mistakenly thought that this was the new version on sale. (TBH, I didn't know what number version I was using other than it is the latest.)  :)  I couldn't figure out why on earth there wasn’t a list of new features anywhere!

Thank you.

I received the email about the new version and I have looked at the web site, but I cannot find what has changed from the previous version.

Anyone know?

Thanks!

Last reply notification prompted me to comment on my latest movie/DVD collection program, CATVids from FN Programs. This one is basically the exact same format as all their other collection programs: BookCAT for Book; SoftCAT for software; CATraxx for Music; and I think they also have a stamp collection program too - something with Stamp and CAT in the title I'm sure!  :P

Anyway, I am doing OK with CATVids for my DVDs. Of course there are some little bits that get me a little twisted now and then but overall its capability for customization is great enough to make me very happy with it overall. One caveat is that there is no separate field for Edition, so all of your titles end up looking something like "The Godfather (Widescreen Edition)(25th Anniversary Special Edition)". That drives me nuts as I much prefer to see the Edition info elsewhere - anywhere but cluttering up the title! I end up just cutting it out of the title and pasting it into a custom field, of which there are many. (Custom fields, that is). But overall you can do just about anything you want with the database to make it work for you. All of FN Programs' apps are like that.

Definitely my best collection apps to date!

Thank you.

General Software Discussion / Re: DRM Management

OK. Me? I have burned and re-ripped DRM tracks back to MP3 and they play fine here. Of course I am not extremely discriminating regarding very high-quality sound; $200 stereo always sounded as good as $2,000 one to me, so the re-ripped MP3's sound fine to me.
