General Software Discussion / Re: Splitting a large MP3 file based on .cue
« Last post by nosh on April 27, 2008, 05:25 AM »
I just tried Medieval CUE Splitter. It's a lot more user-friendly & would be the best choice IF you already have a cue file. Unless I'm mistaken, the only way to create/edit the cut points is to enter the time manually, without any visual aid.

AFAICT mp3DirectCut works with one .cue + .mp3 at a time. Medieval seems to have a batch (folder) mode (which I haven't tried). If you already have .cue files it would be perfect for you.

warbird, fb2k is my player of choice but I don't seem to have the diskwriter plugin which is required for splitting. Is this inbuilt or a separate download? I haven't been able to Google a download link.

Haven't really tried it yet - does it have any sort of batch mode?
-Carol Haynes (April 26, 2008, 07:04 PM)

Yes, File Menu --> Save Split.

PS: The cue file already existed in my case with all the parts named. I don't know about whether it'll mark the start/end points by itself but it should be very easy to do manually looking at the visualization.

Worked like a charm, BTW. Extremely lightweight (180 KB) & does a blazing fast job. This one's a keeper! :)

Any app that does this without much fuss? I need to split a few large files for the iPod - smaller files apparently go easier on power consumption.

I like it. Simple and functional.

It's a good thing you put your photo in there - it tends to up the trust factor (that's the way it works with blogs, anyway) - I'd consider putting it right on the home page, if possible.

General Software Discussion / Re: Uninstallers - do any of them work?
« Last post by nosh on April 25, 2008, 01:32 PM »
A "perfect" uninstaller integrated into the OS would only encourage crippleware. I don't think the OS should assume that all software is good at cleaning itself up. It could atleast take care of the base install folder & registry entries created on install. The sw could generate the trial expiry date on first run.

There are not as many "optimizers" for OS X for various reasons: first, there's no registry,

How does shareware enforce itself then? Via system files? Just curious.

Be aware that some software write data to certain system files for their trial systems, and the uninstallers can't remove this data, but they can tell you which files were modified, so you can remove the data later with your favourite text editor.

One of the more unusual protection schemes I've seen was a DOS chess program that modified just the dates of some system files after it expired. An older version of Rebel Decade, IIRC.

General Software Discussion / Re: XPPro SP3

TCPIP.SYS in SP3 is a different build to SP2 and has the 10 half connection limit as in SP2. The usual hack still works though. I have not noticed any issues using the tool with the new build (see http://www.lvllord.d...=downloads#4226patch)
-Carol Haynes (April 24, 2008, 08:13 PM)

Thanks for clarifying, I can finally go ahead and install it now.

I'm using OpenDNS and a couple of pages loaded halfway & froze earlier today. Been working OK for the rest of the day though.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by nosh on April 24, 2008, 01:33 AM »
I found the advanced rename feature better when I tried it. Nexusfile is off to a decent start but it has a LONG way to go if it intends to match the versatility of xplorer2, or any other successful, time-tested file manager for that matter.
963
I installed Auto Copy a couple of days back and it seems like a keeper. People running without a clipboard manager should be careful though, it's easy to inadvertently zap something important off the clipboard.

« Last post by nosh on April 23, 2008, 08:04 AM »
I've been running a patched tcpip.sys for quite a while now, don't remember the value I've tweaked it to, it's within the recommended guidelines but still almost certainly overkill for my amazing 256 kbps "broad"band connection (the only "unlimited downloads" plan my ISP provides that doesn't cost a bomb). Still, if I can't patch it and I see the download speeds drop that'll be an excellent reason for me to roll back to XP SP2, which works brilliantly!

Hopefully they have sorted out the SP2 TCPIP.SYS stupid security fix (ie. limit outgoing TCPIP connections to 10). If not does anyone know if the widely available patch/hack works with SP3 too as without that it makes using Torrents pretty well  impossible?
-Carol Haynes (April 23, 2008, 06:10 AM)

Whoa! That would have slipped right past me! I assume you're talking of the max concurrent half-open connections (whatever *cou f0dder! gh* that means!) fix. The patch apparently works with the Jan 8, 2008 (MS) fix, according to this page. Hopefully SP3 won't install anything newer!

Not really, if you're prepared to wait for a few more days :) - it's a judgment call, news of the official RTM release (and the imminent leak) and my opinion of the blogger are enough to show me the green light.

Seems useful but doesn't it have to interact with the server and perform the action involved to give you a true preview?
969
Deleting clean software just coz they're incompetent is plain obnoxious! Maybe software authors should start informing users about McAfee's clumsiness using a nice dialog box displayed right at the install phase. Mention that you're not the only developers affected & even urge users to change their AV to something more reliable. I'm sure if enough authors do this it's bound to get them off their asses. Hit right back if the bastards don't listen!

Developer's Corner / AutoHotKey: How to drag & drop _safely_
« Last post by nosh on April 18, 2008, 04:29 AM »
I've written a script to combine two of my favorite programs, AvaFind & Xplorer². The script selects the results (files) from Avafind and drops them to an X² scrap pane. It's running fine but since this is a drag-drop operation I would like to eliminate any risk of dragging the wrong source (and/or) to the wrong target. Both apps are positioned by the script before the drag-drop but if one doesn't load due to some errors or a third app gets focus at the wrong time the results could be potentially disastrous. 8)

And ideas how to eliminate this risk? Just ideas without code sample would be very welcome too.

WMP 11?

In my point of view the person(s) that designed the default interface should be shot on site, immediately, without mercy.

What? No waterboarding? Politically correct folk suck!

Just verified - the AHK manual states "mouse hotkeys require Windows NT/2000/XP or later."
So you should be safe with Win2k, though it seems painful to have to upgrade OSs for something like this. Good Luck.

Since the RMB disabling is working, you might want to try running this script - there's a very slim chance of it actually working but it's worth a shot. You'll need autohotkey installed.

Remember that you can always test extensions in a separate profile.
Very true, I have a separate profile set up exactly for that purpose - there's just one problem, I never end up using it!  :-\

P.S: I'm going to have to look up "enjoyable" once again in the dictionary now. :P

I tried it yesterday after reading that it's way more responsive than FF2 on some blog. Maybe so for some people, but it certainly didn't feel that way to me. Wonder how badly it'll crawl when the remaining 80% of my extensions that are incompatible right now catch up.

My biggest gripe with FF right now other than the "speed" issues is the crap extensions leave behind after they're uninstalled. Can't they have a robust install/uninstall engine that forces a clean uninstall?
