with smartphones, things just gotta be able to sync easily and be in both places at all times.  I cant really stomach any longer having a desktop application like rightnote without being able to pull up the same info on my phone.  and that goes for anything else.

Totally agree.  One of the reasons behind my two choices.

I am sorry to hear that app, I think this underlines the importance of having good export/import functionality so your data does not get locked in a proprietary format. I am a little surprised the Surfulater author apparently created a new app (Clibu) with no way to import from Surfulater?

For what it's worth, I moved from Evernote to CintaNotes, which is a lot more bare-bones, but works well for many of the type of notes I keep. Besides that I keep a development log in markdown in plain text files.

CintaNotes was what I was going to suggest, but it doesn't keep rich format items, so I didn't.

I personally use Ema Personal Wiki, as it works across all of my devices (sync via dropbox), is OSS (so I can make any changes I want), and stores in plain text.  I forked the repo so that I always have the version that I want, irrespective of any changes that he makes.

I'm also trying Boostnote, but haven't gotten that deeply into it yet.  It's also OSS, but updated more regularly.

I think he's currently using a setup like that, but wanted it in the same UI.

This whole thread started as a question, but could be seen as a reference or starting point now. For those in need, of course. And if I find new and/or better tooling for working with AsciiDoc, I'll update this thread again.
Thanks for documenting your experiences - useful! I hope plaintext readable document formats in general get more widely adopted.

I wish CommonMark would take off (or that the creator would let Markdown be standardized)

I thought The Man in the High Castle was good.  Also, I can recommend Jack Ryan.

I personally used reopen closed window quite a bit to quickly get back to something in my history.  I'm sure others used some of those menu items also.  It would seem more customer oriented to put in an option to edit that menu.  I suppose I should be ahppy that they haven't totally killed Chrome yet, though.  (Yes, I'm salty about Google)

I never looked to see if it could do anything past a notification.  A quick look, and it doesn't appear as if that's possible.

This one seems for Linux only. Any similar for Windows available ?

I am still waiting for someone to come up with "LINE" and "MINE"...kind of like WINE, but for running Linux and Mac apps on Windows.

Well they have LINE, it just hasn't been updated in a couple of years and won't work with 64-bit yet.  I wish that it would be updated...  http://www.colinux.org/

There is no "the BSD license". Also, it is based on... Java?

One would assume from the phrasing that they mean the original BSD License, but it would be good to check with them.

1) A developer supporting a web-site

That's what I use it for.  I can't access my work e-mail unless I'm on the VPN (stupid work rules), so I fire a rule whenever certain e-mails hit my inbox to forward it to my personal mail, that then notifies me by pushbullet.  It works well.

That looks pretty cool... requires you to run your own server though, which for some people doesn't work.

Have you taken a look at IFTTT?  And if you do decide to go that way, instead of using SMS, you might take a look at Pushbullet.  I have something like that set up where I install pushbullet on my phone, and receive the e-mail alerts for my site being down.

I picked up this awesome $21 bike "computer" gadget for my bike last week; nicely shows speed, and lots of information in a nice way:

ps I haven't ridden a bike in 20 years but last week we did two 20 mile trips, and then on a whim signed up for a 50 mile event yesterday.. We had fun!

What kind of bike do you have?  I've been thinking about getting another bike since I'm at home all the time.  Right now I only have my folding bike that I keep in the back of the car to use spur of the moment.  Since I'm working from home now, it doesn't get as much use as it used to.

It works well, but is mostly for light riding, and I have a lot of trouble with hills on it.

In general, pcloud has been more, at least for the offers I've seen.  I've been paying attention because I like and use pcloud.  It's in one of those funny situations where I've made money off of pcloud affiliate program, but haven't actually bought anything because I'm waiting for a really good deal.

I was actually looking at that one.  I had a High-End APC before, but I'd heard from someone that they've become unreliable.

Living Room / UPS and NAS
« Last post by wraith808 on August 16, 2019, 07:04 PM »
I had a UPS when I was contracting- bought a top of the line one.  But it gave out after I left the consulting gig, and I never bothered to replace it.

I just paid for that decision, as a drive crashed in my NAS because of a power failure.  It was a decently old drive, so I don't know if that contributed to the failure, but it gave no indications of failure before it happened.  Thankfully, everything on there was either (a) elsewhere or (b) relatively expendable.

Now, I'm looking at getting a new UPS, and not really sure about the most reliable source these days.  Does anyone run a UPS and/or have any suggestions?

General Software Discussion / Re: Syncovery - OneDrive - Encryption
« Last post by wraith808 on August 15, 2019, 11:01 AM »
I'd never actually used Syncovery to sync directly to OneDrive.  As I use OneDrive locally, it's not something that I need (I just sync from OneDrive to my NAS so that I have it in three places), but it's a good feature to be aware of, and I definitely learned something!

As far as the syncing process, they do have a real-time option in Pro that will update as files are changed.  Not sure how exactly that works with encryption though.  The description of the feature can be found at https://www.syncover....com/real-time-sync/

I'm not getting what you're asking.

You want to have items on your PC, and then use Syncovery to sync those items to your OneDrive folder to sync to the cloud?  i.e. if you have c:\users\username\documents and c:\users\username\onedrive, you want to sync the files in documents to an encrypted .sz file in OneDrive and have that sync to the cloud?

If that use case is the one that you're thinking of, it should work.  It depends on if Syncovery releases the .sz file after copying (or you just close it after the job).
