N.A.N.Y. 2008 / Re: The N.A.N.Y. Programming Challenge for 2008
« Last post by tinjaw on December 06, 2007, 06:38 PM »
I really wish there was a way for people to get some points, say ten points, and then "spend" them on the coding snack ideas. People could "spend" their points anyway they want. All ten on one idea, or six on one and four on another, or one point for ten different ideas, etc. This way we can determine which ideas have a wide fan base and then we can tackle the most popular ones first, providing the most benefit to the members. NANY challenges are a good example of why this would be useful. For example, I could hop on over there, see what are the top few and pick one, and than use that as my NANY project.

But I guess I will just have to pick something at random and hope it's popular.

If there are members that want to pitch their ideas to me, send me a PM and give me your sales pitch. Then get your friends to PM me if they also would use the program. If one of the programs shows me a large "fan base", maybe I will build it for NANY 2008.

I have configured Jing to do FTP and create the share, image embed, and video embed code and it works very well.

Hmmm, an element of reinventing the wheel here.

That's fine by me. That application seems to be targeted at a different audience though. Mine is more to keep track of how many more shopping days until Christmas, or how many days until you need to test the pH of the pool again, or how many days it has been since you ordered a product online that is supposed to be shipped in 7-10 days.

The other application is a more extensive program for different kinds of scheduling.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by tinjaw on December 03, 2007, 12:29 PM »
A question for you PPLaundry. Although it is a *HUGE* reason to buy SQLNotes, as it would take thousands and thousands of manhours of coding to do, but would you say that SQLnotes is like taking MSAcess and pre--building hundreds, or thousands, of customizable views? I am asking, because I am trying to understand what is at the raw core of SQLnotes.

I think you forgot the "spouse filter". :P  Depending on whether or not the spouse is in the room also filters out what gets displayed on the computer screen.  ;)

I haven't even read the article yet, but as I started reading that quote and got to, "I was getting about 10 MB/s (that's MegaBytes) between two laptops" I knew without a doubt this was going to be due to SMB.

And Samba has a difficult time when run on certain kernels that have a bug in the library that limits SMB to about 4.3 MB/s.

PPLandry,

I have installed SQLNotes and fired it up to make sure it was properly installed. However, I have not yet used it. But I am going to guess, based on superboyac's comments that it is using a MVC approach, with the data stored in a DB and the grid (I think that is what it is called) is just a view into that DB. If I am correct, it might be useful, PPLaundry, to explain what that means in term of (not) losing data when you simply delete a view.

Again, just guessing both on the "issue" and that such an explanation would be helpful.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best password manager?
« Last post by tinjaw on December 03, 2007, 12:04 PM »
it's a hassle to put your general passwords in there as it's hard to get them out (can't even drag and drop, you have to copy and paste).

I don't believe that is true. I drag and drop. If you can't it is because the application you are trying to drop on isn't allowing it. You can also just click on the little icon next to the field in RoboForm and it will automatically copy it to the clipboard for you so you need not even use Ctrl + C.

9. Fill Forms by Drag-and-Drop.
If the "Fill Forms" button does not fill forms from the Passcard, you can drag-and-drop field values from the Passcard Editor to an online form:
- Start dragging the field by its drag and drop handle which is a picture of small suitcase,
- Select the field value or its part and then start dragging the selection.
- Not all applications will accept a drop part of drag-and-drop.

10. Fill Forms by Copy-and-Paste.
You can also Copy-and-Paste values into the online form or an application:
- In Passcard Editor click the Handle icon, it will copy field value to Clipboard.
- In your online form or application place mouse to field to be filled and press CTRL+V or invoke Paste command using this application user interface.
- Most applications can Paste from clipboard. So if Drag-and-Drop does not work, use Copy and Paste.

Round peg. Square hole.

You have general purpose tools like Joomla, PHPNuke, etc. if you want something that is integrated. If you want integrated, that is the best route to go. The only reason to choose WordPress or PHPbb over an integrated solution is because you want a best of breed tool, or something that is at least focused and thus more full featured in the desired area. So using a screwdriver to pound nails can be done but why would you want to.

Now, integration of best of breed tools is a different thing all together (or should I say different things all together  :P ). There is a reason to do that in that you get the benefits of best of breed with a means of working between them. In that case the effort required is worth the payoff.

I have made a comprehensive video for HowLong2It.

I will be adding it and more info the to the program's main page. But I just wanted to get it out now because I won't be until this evening that I will get a chance to formally put it up.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: RecentX @ 50% off on BitsDuJour.com
« Last post by tinjaw on December 03, 2007, 05:51 AM »
I purchased this program weeks ago (I think there was a sale of a DC discount at the time) and have found it very useful. At $10 it is definitely worth the price. I suggest you grab a copy if you don't already have one. RecentX is one of those programs that duplicates functionality of the operating system and native applications, but is one of those that makes things more accessible and convenient to the point where it becomes integrated into your day-to-day use.

Developer's Corner / Re: Look For Premade Gallery Scripts/Generator
« Last post by tinjaw on December 02, 2007, 05:21 PM »
i'm not 100% sure exactly how you want it to behave though.

Maybe a concrete example will help. Imagine having eight screenshots of my software. I want to upload a javascript file to tinjaw.dcmember.com/scripts that does what I want and I just insert a line of script into tinjaw.dcmembers.com/MySoftware.html. Then at the place I inserted the line of script I see a 400x300 images of my first screen shot, and below it are thumbnails of all eight screenshots. I can click on the thumbnails to change what is displayed in the 400x300, and if I click on the 400x300 I am brought to a page that has the eight thumbnails but when I click on one it displays the full size screenshot at its native resolution. If I took a screenshot at 1280 x 1024, it displays it at 1280x1024.

The more I think about it the more I'm realizing that it is really no different than a standard app to generate a thumbnail gallery other than instead of making a bunch of html pages, it creates a single javascript file and provides you the code to insert into another html page.

I am aware of the usual tools to generate thumbnail galleries from images. I am also aware of various LightBox scripts. What I cannot find is a way to do what New Egg does. I have taken some screencams using Jing to demonstrate what I am looking for.

This first video show the portion of a New Egg page that has the functionality I want.

When you click on the image, it brings you to a larger gallery.

The answer to your question is... Nope :P

I never looked there before. There are some nice people in the yearbook. Like this nice lady...

DC Website Help and Extras / Donation Coder Seals
« Last post by tinjaw on December 02, 2007, 11:10 AM »
I like the idea of forum badges. I'd also like to have Donation Coder Seals. Larger images we can use on web pages like other awards banners. I'd like to see them for things like programming contests. I want to post them on pages like my HowLong2It webpage.

I am thinking something like a Cody coin. The US Army has a tradition of handing out coins for stuff like this.

This is crappy, but gets my idea across.

Hey! I got an idea.  :feedback:

I listen to public radio and during their fun raisers they have "matching dollars". This is where somebody, or some organization, pledges to double the amount of money donated during a certain period. Sometimes there is a goal that must be met for the doubling to occur.

Why don't we look into getting some corporate sponsors. Now, we make it clear to them up front that this is strictly them giving DC cash for absolutely nothing in return except good will.

Then you post on the front page the current sponsor and the goal we need to reach and the deadline we need to reach it by to get the doubling. For example, on Jan 1, we get a matching donation from Company XYZ of we raise $100 in donations by Jan 3rd. And then another one kick in for Company YZA if we raise $50 by Jan 5th, etc. Maybe some  dot com millionaire will pledge to match 5:1 for every $1 raised over a 24 hour period.
