It's documented well enough to make it work at least .. I tried it earlier and was a bit surprised I needed to install a plugin to be able to import the Unix mail box files into Thunderbird.

Apparently something called Aid4Mail should be able to convert it, but paying $25 just to switch seems a bit crazy.

What you could also try is to use the /EXPORT command line parameter. The Bat! stores it's mail in a folder structure that (mostly) reflects the actual structure you see, so a perl script that iterates over the folders and emits a /EXPORT call for each to unix mbox format might work.

Of course I am (starting to feel like) enough of a dinosaur to still code in C because it's "more efficient" :-[.

There has been a new minor version of DOpus every 2-4 months since version 9 was released, the latest is 9.1.3.0 which was released on June 11th 2009.

You can check a list of the minor releases by looking at the forum posts here:

http://resource.dopu...om/viewforum.php?f=1

I use both DOpus and TC, and I think they complement each other rather well. There are some tasks where a windows explorer type interface is more efficient, and others where a commander type one excels.

Well, I must admit I wasn't too happy with Visual C++ when I found out why it was crashing .. but it was nice to see it wasn't a bug in my code ;D.

Hard to C is my blog about programming. About the problems, bugs and aha-moments you encounter while working on projects.

Since I do most of my coding in C/C++ and assembly language, many posts will be related to those, but I hope some of it will be of more general interest as well .

The Samsung NC10 may be worth a look as well .. it had the best keyboard of the ones we tried (the actual keys are close to full size making it more comfortable to type on).

General Review Discussion / Re: Free Total Commander licences

I have heard nothing from him so far, so I guess he is busy. But like someone said, can't complain about having to wait a little for a free license .

I've always wanted to try to use TC, but the .. well .. let's be honest .. ugliness kind of kept me from doing so. Also I had this feeling it was a very die-hard product where people would discuss endlessly about which keyboard shortcut would be the most optimal to save 0.0001 second when performing some operation.

After having tried it for a while now and reading (and even daring to post on) the forum over there, I've come to the conclusion that I quite like some aspects of it .. there are some situations where a Norton Commander type interface just beats explorer type ones, and others where explorer are better. So having both TC and DO is great .

I was a little disappointed searching through the forums that some suggestions are handled by suggesting people to use AHK scripts or external tools (like KatMouse) instead of fixing the actual program. But of course I am sure the author is a very busy guy, and at least the avid forum posters over there give some options. It just feels like it is going a bit against the whole "this is a power tool that uses as few resources and is as fast as possible" scheme.

Anyway, I am just rambling here .. I am sure he will get around to us lucky winners :).

« Last post by Jibz on June 06, 2009, 08:49 AM »
I did not miss your point, and please do not feel I am attacking you personally .. I am attacking this flawed notion that a lot of people have that as long as nothing stops them (or at least nothing they can't click away fast), whatever they do is ok ::).

If you steal clothes from a store that has no alarm, and the owner puts in an alarm, would you tell him he should make up his mind if his clothes are "free"?

If you're speeding whenever you drive to work, and the police sets up a speed trap, would you tell them they should make up their minds if the speed limits apply?

The bottom line is mIRC is shareware, and you know it .

Maybe we should apply for a new licensing term called "freeware" (with quotes)?

"Freeware" : Commercial or shareware software that does not directly stop you from using it illegally, which makes it de-facto real freeware.

Seriously .. you blame the author for your inability to illegally use his software like you used to?

General Software Discussion / Looking for: Scan and convert to PDF, but simple
« Last post by Jibz on June 02, 2009, 09:27 AM »
I am trying to find a very very very (did I mention it has to be very?) easy to use application that will make it possible to scan pages, converting them to a PDF file, and send that by e-mail.

I know it's easy enough to do the steps one by one, but the thing is it has to be a "one-click, anybody can do it" kind of thing.

Any suggestions or experiences?
970
One guess would be that your anti-virus is intercepting the mail requests and doing the actual download in the background, leaving TheBat! waiting, which makes it time out due to the large number of e-mails.

I know my AV works that way; when I press the check for new e-mail button it will show the retrieving mail window but do nothing while the AV does the actual download in the background and then all of a sudden speed through all the e-mails as the AV feeds them to TheBat! from it's local store.

If it's different in other e-mail clients, it may be because Avast installs a plug-in in TheBat! but not in the others.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Mini-Review - Objconv

App Version Reviewed2.08 (May 27th 2009)
Supported OSesWindows, Linux
Support MethodsForum, e-mail

Relationship btwn. Reviewer and Product REVIEWER: Regular user

Intro:

First of all let me warn you that this is a tool for programmers, and probably only a small subset of those will ever need a tool like this.

Objconv is a command line tool that can convert object and library files between a number of formats, and also perform certain changes in the process.

Objconv at the moment supports COFF, ELF, OMF and MACHO formats, with both 32-bit and 64-bit support where possible.

It can be used as a simple library manager because it supports adding and extracting members.

Objconv also includes a disassembler supporting the SSE4, AVX, FMA and XOP instruction sets.

The author, Agner Fog, is well known for his work on documenting low level optimization techniques, and the pdf files available from his homepage are a great resource.

objconv.png

Who is this app designed for:

Objconv is a tool for programmers who need to convert object files or libraries between different formats.

One example would be if you would like to use an object/library in your project which is only available in a format that is not supported by your development tools. Another would be if you are the developer of a library and would like to provide it in various formats to support your users.

The Good

Objconv is one of the few object conversion tools that I have tried that actually works in most cases. Of course it only changes the object format and not the actual code, so it will not perform magic conversions of MFC libraries to work on Linux or similar, but if you know what you are doing it can save you quite a bit of work.

It is fast and easy to use, and the options to dump objects, modify symbols and perform library management tasks means it can replace a couple of other tools.

The needs improvement section

While I like command line tools, there might be developers who would prefer a gui.

It would be nice if there was simple wildcard support in the switches for changing symbol names, like -nl:foo_* to make all symbols starting with foo_ invisible.

How does it compare to similar apps

Many development tools have some quirks about what object files they will accept, and I have run into problems in the past with for instance the Borland Pascal/Delphi compilers, where some conversion tools would produce object files that did not work.

Conclusions

Objconv is a tool with a very limited audience, but if you happen to be a developer who needs an object conversion tool it is an excellent choice.

Even if you do not, you might be interested in checking out some of Agner's optimization manuals if you are a C/C++ coder or otherwise interested in low level optimization.

Beyond Compare can compare Word files, it does it by converting them to text and comparing that, which may not be what you want.

The new buttons are confusing me a bit. I usually check the list of unread posts and then press the 'mark all messages as read' button.

This button used to be the leftmost, but now it's tucked in between the others and I have to be careful to stop myself from clicking 'bookmark selected' and then look for the right one.

It may just be me that has this force of habit problem, but I would prefer if the button I use the most was easy to locate (leftmost or rightmost) .. anyone have an opinion?
