I used a plain text wiki for a while. It was vim-specific (the name is viki).
It was fun while I was using a big arse text file for diary/todos... then I moved to onenote.

Yes. Sorry, I changed the location of the thank you page. The 404 you get was supposed to be a simple "Thanks":

Thank you for subscribing to workingcogs.com mailing list.

You will receive an email with a confirmation link (for mailing list general-workingcogs.com). Before we begin sending you the information you requested, we want to be certain we have your permission. This is why there is a confirmation link to click. The link points to listping.com, which is a third-party company that processes our mailing list requests. You will not join the mailing list until you approve it by following it.

Once you acknowledge of your intent of receiving information from workingcogs.com, you will receive a welcome e-mail and will become a subscriber. Every single e-mail you receive in the future will have an unsubscribe link at the bottom.

The workingcogs-general mailing list is sent out occasionally with information on new additions and updates to the site, related news and events announcements. Your email address will never be sold to any third party and you will only receive mail related to the workingcogs.com from us. We don’t tolerate spam.

We hope you enjoy your subscription.

Have a productive week,

It's fixed now. I'd like to have you on the mailing list, but of course I leave it up to you... there's a direct download link as tomos pointed out.

I locked myself out of this forum by playing with the settings in my firewall :)

Anyway, thanks to those who subscribed (and didn't get the thank you message :) ).

I think excel 2007 has named cells, and pivot tables can do much of what the demo  advertises as Quantrix-only.

Still, I'm salivating too...

Ok, I'm done with one of the programs (interruptron) and documentation... I'm building a site around it, so it'll take me a few more hours... I'm almost there :)

http://winamp.com/ (PR=8)
This was the first music player most people started using. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary. If you cannot find that page... well. There you go.

More info:
  • Optional registration for posting and searching.
  • Mark threads as solved
  • Administrated through WP-admin.
  • Uses WordPress database for registration and users.
  • Spam words filter option. (Optional). The spam filter option gets the spam words from WordPress’s own spam filter and words can be added in the WordPress admin -> option -> disscussion.
  • PHP 4 compability.
  • Moderator can be set individually for every forum.
  • Supports BBCode. (Optional)

Another issue might be security. How easy is this forum to spam?
I can envision a nice CMS system based on WP; that makes management a breeze... and the thing is very portable too (if you ever need to change hosting).

I like it!

General Software Discussion / cool: a wp plugin to make a WP blog look like a forum
« Last post by urlwolf on December 01, 2007, 05:29 AM »
http://www.fahlstad....wp-plugins/wp-forum/

Advantage: you can integrate blog users and forum users (no need for 2 signups).

No idea about performance or support. This might be necessarily not as good as an specialized solution such as SMF.

Thoughts?

There's a portable version of oneNote. I'm sure it's not legal, but it'd solve your problem (oh, I see you found it :) sorry).
You can synch the databases (they are simply files) using a simple synchronization program such as super flexible file synchronizer (SFFS)
962
I think you can do it using gracenote's recommendations.
Plus, you can install the musicIP plugin and have the same recommendations you would using musicIP.

hmm, I use none :) Damn, am I weird.
Maybe comics reading in my scheduled rest is my secret productivity booster...

I like eyeCue! it sounds like IQ, -which reminds people of psychology- it's really short... it's catchy!
965
Great stuff! I like JediType!
it's kind of difficult because it does two things, reading and writing speed-ups. Maybe these should be named differently and be independent somehow, although it kills the nice advantage of having them combined.

app, I do have Wordzilla's thesaurus! thanks for the suggestion!

Keep'em coming! I'm sure something great will come out of this thread!

Ralf: I think the martial arts idea is good too. I think it's Sensei (but still, it's just western alphabetization of a japanese character :), who knows! )

Justice, thanks for your suggestions too.

The problem is that there are 4 concepts (speed, attention, reading, writing) and the final name must be short! Hard!
966
After reading mouser's threads on how important it is to find the right name for your applications, I decided to ask for help here.

I'm writing:
[...] a program that helps you read and write faster. It will use stats on what you read/write to help with autocompletion and to present words at the optimal speed. If everything works, it will even generate APML feeds with your attention habits:

http://apml.org
(From the main GOE 2007 thread)

How do you name such a thing?
I have been playing with variations of reading/writing/attention/saving/speed-up and they all suck :)

Thanks!

hmm, I'm trying Vizzac... I don't see how it creates PDF, other than that it looks great.

NOTE: big downside for me: it doesn't work with intellicomplete!

winamp 5.5 is fantastic (I thought I'd never say that)!

I grew tired with musicIP constant crashes and lack of features. The new standard UI for foobar 9.5 is quite cool, but I'm too lazy to spend dozens of hours chasing all components to make it work the way my 9.3 does.

So I hit winamp. Holy shit. They have improved a lot.
They grab album art quite well. Even fix tags. Album art is displayed in all sizes very well, and the entire thing loads super fast!

Give it a try and tell me what you think...
Plus, it has a MusicIP plugin so you can still mix the way musicIP does (the only saving grace of a tool that looks more like the flintstones' car now than ever :) )

Found Deals and Discounts / snagIt 7 free: grab it
« Last post by urlwolf on November 23, 2007, 02:25 PM »
Of course, this is a fully working version. They are hoping a lot of folks upgrade to the latest version. The upgrade is $19.95 and still a good deal just as the Camtasia upgrade.

To get the free download go here:

http://www.oldapps.c...d.php...nagIt725.exe

Then go here and enter your name, state, and email. They will send you the software key:

http://www.techsmith.com/snagit/ukdn.asp

You're all done!

Be aware that it is version 7 of SnagIt...a very useful product. Current version is 8.2.

Not sure if it has the nice 'scrolling capture' (something screenshot captor does, but fails on some applications such as opera) of the latest version.

« Last post by urlwolf on November 23, 2007, 02:20 PM »
Here's yey another one:
http://www.debriefnotes.com/

free, $29, and $39 versions.

It's based on the index card idea, seems to be good for bibliography management (not as good as endNote, no interaction with word). Does contacts, reading lists , etc

Outliner seems pretty good.
971
I like Zaine's idea!
We could also target sites like lifehacker... I'm sure they could feature some of the programs that randomly pop up in the forums.
972
just to reword the question,...
Noone here knows where I can get a sharepoint server where I can stick a (tiny) oneNote notebook?

If you work for a company that uses M$ servers (and you are ok with it!) I don't mind hosting my notebook on a DC friend's computer :)

General Software Discussion / Re: SyncBackSE vs. SuperFlexible
« Last post by urlwolf on November 17, 2007, 08:31 AM »
by the way, SFFS has an option to recover all those individual zip files (even if you have incremental versions!) automatically. It mangles the names, but it understands them so no problem.

I'm using SFFS for incremental backups and it works better than any of the specialized solutions I have tried (backup4all, Genie, etc). Just tested it 4 days ago.
974
I'm addicted to oneNote.
Now that I have a company in the making and a partner, I'd like to share oneNote notebooks (it beats wikis etc when we are only 2 people, it works offline better, etc).

The problem with a onenote Shared notebook: can you do it without a sharepoint server? I don't think so. But maybe you can.

If there's no way around, do you know of any way to use a sharepoint server without having to pay for an (incredibly expensive) M$ server?

Thanks

Ok, I have two applications that suit the purposes of the GOE 2007. One of them is a timer that counts interruptions, working time, and rest independently, and plots those. I call it the interruptron!

The other one is a program that helps you read and write faster. It will use stats on what you read/write to help with autocompletion and to present words at the optimal speed. If everything works, it will even generate APML feeds with your attention habits:

http://apml.org

Now... timing is an issue. I have an iron-set deadline for the interruptron to be ready by 30 Nov. Docs included. The other tool may be in beta by that time.

Depending on how many entries we are having, I'd like to suggest an extension of the deadline. Either way, I'll do my best to get these two out by 30 Nov (l'm a last minute guy, I know :) )
