General Software Discussion / Keep your PC up to date with RadarSync
« Last post by brotherS on April 15, 2006, 02:28 PM »
http://www.radarsync.com/

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to figure out which of the software/peripherals/various programs on your computer need to be updated, without a lot of fuss? Enter RadarSync [...]

Read more at http://www.lifehacke...radarsync-167174.php.

It really did find more than a handful of outdated stuff on my PC, nice tool!

Update frenzy today, huh?  8)

Will try it, thanks!

So... mouser, nudone, Carol, (anyone else?) - how do you like using MLB on a daily basis? :)

Anyone heard of a Virtual keyboard? This is where an Infro-red light shines a Virtual keyboard on any surface...
What about asking that question in the "what kind of keyboard you use?" thread?  :-[  https://www.donation...rch2;search=keyboard

Nice article about FeedBlitz and upcoming competition: http://www.readwrite.../email_syndicati.php

Some stats there also!  :o

Living Room / VideoSift - the best videos from YouTube and GoogleVideo!
« Last post by brotherS on April 15, 2006, 07:47 AM »
VideoSift puts the best videos from YouTube and GoogleVideo into a simple Digg-like interface. Good videos float to the top.

http://www.videosift.com/

I watched these:
Once you hear my audio demo, you'll just be blazed!
Clerks 2 Trailer
Pet Store Fun (mouser will love this!)
"Tick" - Global Warming TV Ad - Environmental Defense
Unnecessary Censorship - Jimmy Kimmel
Baseball Prank

Great fun!!  ;D ;D ;D

I enjoyed playing Ports of Call. You needed to ship stuff from A to B - needless to say that lots of decisions had to be made, including rescuing cast-aways, shipping weapons illegally yes or no, what kind of ships to buy, etc. etc. :)

This is an article I plan to publish to an audience of 250,000.
Wow, nice!

I like the article, just add one more sentence about what mouser said.

And btw, the URLs in your post are broken, you added them in a strange way: http://"http://www. isn't working ;)

As stated above, use some program to remove the stuff you (and your system ;) ) don't *need*, then install and use Startup Delayer --> https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1399.0 I love it!

I removed masu's last post here since he only quoted another post and didn't add anything.

I wanted to tell him in private but for whatever reason he "blocked" private messages...

Please don't reply to this post, thanks.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Locate 3.0 - great HD search tool
« Last post by brotherS on April 15, 2006, 02:42 AM »
Having removed both desktop search apps I had installed on my system, I've come to rely on Veign's Seeker to find stray or lost files. It's fast, easy, and leaves my computer alone when I'm not using it.
Err... did you even try Locate for a day or three? It's a *totally* different approach, you can't really compare those two programs.

If you like Seeker, what about posting a Seeker Mini-Review? :)

@superboyac: I like PaceMaker, it has nice options to avoid the 'chipmunk effect' when speeding up mp3 files. I tried that other plugin you mentioned (and others) too, but PaceMaker worked best.

Amorak. well, i did mention it on the site about a week or two ago and absolutely no one showed any interest in it at all https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2935.0 it lets you 'bookmark' individual parts within a track.

anyone into the 'visualization' plugins may like this: milkdrop 1.04
I must have missed your post about Amorak... how does it work? I suppose not by manipulating the mp3 files itself, right? Could you add one or two screenshots to this thread? Winamp's Amorak plugin page doesn't have much details either...

If you like visualisation for the music you play you HAVE TO try BeatHarness! I didn't mention it above because I use it only rarely, but it's pretty cool. You can add cam input (!) and even video files!!

[...] like brotherS made me think about, I think a file renamer gives you direct control over your files and folders. If you know where to find it or its name, then you can use either your desktop search client or a utility like FileLocator Pro to get there fast.
Don't forget to mention the great and free Locate here :) https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1385.0 has all the info, it's blazing fast and brought the fun back to searches!

:) Great tool! So great, in fact, that I felt compelled to write a Windows version!

LabelControls - labels the controls of the active window with Numbers, for direct access via Ctrl+Number.
Awesome idea!

And if someone knows how to extract the buttons from toolbars, the contents of Internet Explorer windows, and more, please let me know!
I hope someone here knows the answer to that.

It's just a preview, I'll finish it tomorrow.
Great, I'll try the next version, not enough time right now.
965
Ok, you don't seem to like those suggestions as much as I do... :D

But what about reducing WinWarden's CPU usage? I'm using it only for the task described in https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2689.0 and it's using WAY (!!!) more CPU than my other 2 AHK scripts combined, which contain ~20 auto-execute scripts and lots of manual triggers/hotkeys/hotstrings (>100 kb code together).

IMHO WinDirStat is *the* perfect (and free) solution for manual HDD cleanups!

See https://www.donation...37.msg10309#msg10309 for more info and links.

That's exactly where I deleted it before I posted the post above  :-[
970
that addin is really quite ingenius
You are using it too now?
971
:tellme: You have checked the checkboxes in the Settings screen?
Yes, I checked that before.

Or try to delete the ini file.
I now tried it - but Windows seems to cache the settings? I deleted the ini and opened the settings - which were still being displayed as I did set them the last time!?

General Software Discussion / Winamp plugins and additional useful stuff
« Last post by brotherS on April 13, 2006, 09:32 AM »
Since we discussed Winamp plugins in various threads I think I should start a topic that focusses on this.

I'm using these plugins for Winamp 5.x:

Toaster, a great track change notifier plugin - I don't like to have Winamp waste desktop space, it's minimized to the tray almost all the time: http://www.winamp.co...etails.php?id=138586

DFX - a great quality sound enhancement (DSP) plugin (not just an equalizer!): http://fileforum.bet.../detail/1030468205/1

PaceMaker - a nice tempo/pitch DSP plugin that allows me to listen to recorded radio shows at 177% of the original speed: http://www.winamp.co...689&show=reviews

Winamp Advanced Controls: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2295.0

Mute Hotkey - assign one "global hotkey" to mute/unmute: http://www.nunzioweb.com/daz/

MuchFX - originally I wanted something to switch between the two DSP plugins mentioned above, but this plugin even allows me to run them both at the same time! Just one not-so-cool side-effect: PaceMaker's keyboard shortcuts are disabled when using MuchFX - some info: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3078.0

And of course I *have to* mention Skrommel's IdleMute - it's not a plugin, but a real help if you are (for example) using your PC to play music late in the evenings: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1580.0 / https://www.donation...m/Software/Skrommel/
975
Added NIYoW, Name It Your Way as perhaps the last app considered for the review. That gives us an even 20 apps and we'll see if we can make it interesting.
I'm really looking forward to the review! While I don't rename files every day such a tool can save huge amounts of time and reduce your stress-level at the same moment.

:)
