General Software Discussion / Advice on a [learning] JavaScript IDE?
« Last post by barney on March 29, 2011, 10:06 AM »
Folk,

A friend/client of mine has suddenly taken it into mind to learn JavaScript (oi, vey!), and they (man & wife team) have asked for advice on an IDE that would help them.  Told 'em I'd check with some experts of whom I know  ;D.

They asked specifically about a couple of Antechinus products, Code Chameleon and JavaScript Editor, neither of which I've ever used ... the price on Code Chameleon isn't bad, but the price on JavaScript Editor strikes me as rather dear if it is a one (1)-trick pony.

Anyone with experience of either product?  Or perhaps you can recommend something similar?  I don't think they'd cavil at spending less than $100, so mention of a reasonably priced product would not be amiss.
952
Not sure if this is relevant, but I came across a situation where <?php vs. <? vs. <?php[major version] broke with some of those being deprecated and made obsolete. It took me a while to figure out the problem. That was a while ago though, and I don't remember the specifics.

Oh, it is relevant ... fell into that trap many a time afore I disabled short keys.  Some servers just don't recognize 'em, and some servers want even more .  Mostly a thing of the past, methinks, but definitely problematic at the time.
953
First thing to run/check is <?php phpinfo(); ?>
Well ... yeah ... but running phpinfo(); doesn't correct for idiocy  :P.  'Sides, there are other issues that phpinfo(); won't correct <sigh /> :'(.
954
error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED
in PHP.ini ... but the error log being updated wasn't the error log I was tracking.  I seldom set PHP to report errors on-page, as that can significantly interfere with page structure.  I just lost track of which error log was being updated because of the multiple installs - basically, I confused myself  :-[.
955
 :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
I was calling the wrong file.
 :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Doesn't change the rest of my confusion, though.

I was so certain of the file name that I never bothered to check that it was in place.  Damned dumb tyro error, ya know?

<sigh> Will I ever learn?</sigh>
956

One guess, shouldn't the extension have to be .php, i.e. index.php?

That lets PHP know it's a PHP page, but I've oft included
<?php ... ?>
in html pages w/o harm.  Although, perhaps I need to make some adjustment to httpd.conf?

<?php

echo "Menu";
    include (
'sidemenu.html');

?>
is the particular bit that's not being recognized.

Have I forgotten some httpd.conf configuration?  This is  a new installation, so I may have overlook some configuration, but I cannot see it (after many reviews of both httpd.conf and php.ini)

the lack of syntax highlighting should be a clue.

Yeah, I concur, but I cannot determine what the clue indicates.  Other pages indicate properly , some .html , some .php.
957
I don't even know how to troubleshoot/research this one.  There's a local Apache/MySQL/PHP installation on my dev box, latest - I think? - versions of each.

PHP files load just fine from most of the subdirs of the Web root.  However, there's one HTML (index.html) file that simply does not allow PHP to be recognized.  It's driving me buggy.  I've tried reinstalling both Apache and PHP, to no avail.  Nothing I can find in the HTML and related CSS file(s) would appear to be normal.  But a simple
Code: PHP [Select]
  1. <?php include 'file.ext'; ?>
doesn't work, nor does it highlight properly in the editor (Komodo Edit).  As stated in the post title, I'm bumfuzzled :'(.
958
microscopic detail: it is not "type ctrl+n/ctrl+s" but "press ctrl+n/ctrl+s"

Picky, picky, picky  :) ;D :D :P.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Text Expander software for Windows

Something that might seem like an "advertisement" if posted out of context seems very appropriate on such a thread.

Yep, yer right ... but that doesn't make it seem less like advertising  :D.  Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with developer(s) comments as to what the software can do, especially in contrast to other mentioned software.  After all, it was developed to fill a perceived need, although some of us need help with that perception.

For instance, I personally was unaware of much of the capability explained because I'd never had a need for that capability.  I'm now better informed, and know where to look should such a need arise.  Methinks the advertising element arises from:
  • I need to do this
  • The software can do it
  • I need to do that
  • The software can do it
  • I need to do something else
  • The software can do it.
The back-and-forth of such an exchange can look more like advertising, without that truly being the intent, than elucidation.  That doesn't mean anyone wants the interchange to stop, but we do tend to tag things with our own labels  :P.

Is it just me, or is some of this thread starting to read like an ad?  ;)

Been that way for quite a few posts, methinks  :'( :P.

I think it would be smarter and more politically expedient to either offer two separate versions or offer regex as an installable (and removable) option. Ideally with its own installer to cut down on the number of 'casual' installs.
+1

Set it as a plug-in module, installation optional.  That way, there's separate development of two (2) components, neither of which really rely upon the other (well, OK, the plug-in depends upon the main module, but development of the plug-in doesn't  ;D).

Nice app.  (Running it on Win7 64-bit Ultimate.)  It brings over everything - including all images - from a Web page with Drag 'n Drop, keeps the formatting nicely, date/time stamps the note.  Unfortunately, it does not bring over the URL (for attribution purposes).  Since I'm doing this 300-500 times a day, making a 2nd trip for the URL doubles the time requirement for my purposes.

While the keyword system is nice, it does not allow for multiple keywords/tags:  gamer pim notes (or gamer, pim, notes) appears on one line of the keyword/tag list, rather than each word appearing once in the list.  It would be much more convenient to click (Ctrl-click?) items in the list, then see every note with the selected keyword(s)/tag(s), something like CintaNotes.

Using hotkey combinations (non-selectable save for one) is great for non-mousers (no offense mouser  :P), but it would be much more convenient if those combinations were also toolbar icons as well, thus reducing switches from mouse to keyboard to mouse.

All in all, I'd say this is a worthwhile start ... can't wait to see what it's like when it graduates from v0.2 to v1.0  .

Edit:  typos.

Have badges, be proud, stick them on your website or on your car bumper, or on your t-shirt: "I donate to DC", "I support coders", whatever, wherever. Make people feel part of something. We're in the "social networking" age, people want to feel part of something - and demonstrate that they are. Look how Apple does it, people pay over the odds so they can feel part of the Apple Gang - and display the Apple badges in the forms of iPads, etc.
+1

While my personal preference is badgeless, most folk consider some sort of badge a good thing.  It's a visible representation of their contribution(s), a source of pride, something saying, "I did that," w/o having to verbally state it.  When public local radio stations hold their fund drives, many of the compensatory gifts are boldly emblazoned with that station's logo.  It's a silent testament to the fact that they made some donation to that station, but there's no amount specified (other than the minimum donation to get that particular gift  :D).

I don't know what the software/forum equivalent might be.  Perhaps the title bar stating, "{appname} created by {author} for {recipient's name}" applied to some of the Coding Snacks, where applicable?  Or a bold headline on the page(s) after login, something to the effect of, "Welcome back {name}, thanks for your donation?"  Maybe.  I just don't know.  But something, something that acknowledges and reconfirms that person's contributory effort.  There's a psychological feel good to that kind of recognition, but it also keeps donating in the forefront of the mind, making further donations that much more likely.

Just something to bear in mind while considering methodologies going forward.
964
Marketers have known for centuries what psychologist have only recently discovered  ;D, to wit, all personal disbursement decisions are emotional.  Regardless the amount of intellectual investigation and research, the actual buy moment is an emotional, not rational, decision.

Many folk consider marketing to be somehow demeaning, not realizing that they use it on a daily basis.  (Every time you try to convince someone else of some concept you favour, you are marketing.)  Selling software, however it is done, is an exercise in marketing - and the success or failure is seldom based upon the efficacy of the software so much as the perception of the software.  (If you doubt that, consider how Windows and Office became the defacto standard for businesses and most of us mere plebes.)

The whole donationware concept is a matter of presentation and perception:  if marketed properly, it will succeed; poorly, it will fail.  Many good and thoughtful points have been raised in this thread, but the ultimate decision to part with lucre is an emotional decision on the part of the one who holds it.  As long as you bear that in mind during your presentation, you will succeed.  The only decision that needs making is the how of the presentation  :P.

I've been using ShortKeys for several years.  The free version is limited to, I think, fifteen (15) replacement sets, but the paid version accommodates many more.

The replacement text is limited to 3,000 characters, so that may not work for you.  I've never had need to try truly formatted text, so cannot speak to that.  It's a Windows TSR, so it works in almost any application.

You might give it a try.

You might also take a look at timns' Auspex.  I don't know the limits, just started playing with it, but since timns is an active DC local, he'd prolly accommodate reasonable enhancement suggestions if Auspex doesn't currently perform to your needs.

Edit:  I see lanux128 got in while I was typing  :P.
966
Kinda took it as read  :-[.

Edit.

Took it as read (rhymes with color red) references an assumption that everyone present has read the same document, with slightly lesser assumption that everyone is on the same page  :P.
967
+1 for the Win7 product ... haven't installed stickies on two (2) of the Win7 boxes ... the native product, while somewhat limited, does everything I need ... everything else I do with Cinta Notes, MemPad, or Info Select
968
You might consider stickies for that.  It's good, superior to most in the venue.  Or, if you're using Win7, the built in Sticky Notes is reasonable.  I've never checked to see if there's something similar for Linux, although I suspect there is.  Guess I should - could come in handy at times.
969
The really are quite different from each other, so my advice would be to buy both! NoteZilla ($18) is for sticky notes only, while AllMyNotes ($5) is kind of a 'PIM'.
+1

Used NoteZilla quite a bit in the past - better than most at what it does, also goes a bit farther in functionality than most.  If you need Post-It® functionality, it's worth the money.

AllMyNotes - free version - has been a staple on my system(s) for some time.  Lets me keep track of email addresses, software installs, other esoterica that have no dedicated apps for tracking.  Also serves as ad hoc code snippets storage until I can transfer 'em to a true snippet filer.  It's another tool worth having ... now, if we can just get eighteen (18) more folk to buy it  :-\ :P.
970
It's no surprise that my vote for this one is
                                YES              YES               YES

There are any number of image capture programs, but I find it extremely useful to have this feature running under the auspices of a clipboard monitor/manger.
-cranioscopical (March 08, 2011, 01:21 PM)

I'm with cranioscopical on this one

A significant part (four (4) to six (6) hours) of my daily routine is to collate a number of different clips, which oft include images, into a cohesive document.  Being able to copy/paste included images from the same interface would greatly simplify - and significantly shorten - that task.

I've tried several clipboard managers over the years, but none have been adequate to the needed functionality.  CHS has come closest - with image support it would be near ideal  :-*.

... and I'm back again  :o.

I've been trying to use this software to write an image to a MicroSD card: two (2) of 'em, actually, a one (1) Gig SanDisk and an eight Gig SanDisk.  Every time I try, with either card, the software comes back to me with a message that the target has insufficient capacity  :(.  The image file I'm trying to write is only 124+ Meg .  I've tried several forae with no result, and none of my searches have displayed an error of this nature ... so I'm back here again.

Oh, if it matters, I'm doing this to play with my new NookColor  :-*.

General Software Discussion / Anyone with recent experience of BufferZone?
« Last post by barney on March 08, 2011, 04:11 PM »
BufferZonePro is now freeware.

Thought it might be worthwhile, but still a bit dubious of sandbox software.

Last DC mention I saw of its use was CWuestefeld's comments here, 2007-08-28, 10:12:47.

The current version is v3.41, but have no idea the version that was panned.  Saw a reference to it at Gizmo's, but that's not always the recommendation it's cracked up to be  :).  Has anyone had experience of it since then?
