Living Room / MacBook Pro-Parallels-multiple users
« Last post by techidave on April 01, 2008, 04:21 PM »
Since there seems to be some knowledgable Mac users on this forum, I will ask this question.

I am trying to setup a Macbook Pro running 10.4 with Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac and also xpsp2 to work with multiple users on the mac side.  (just for the record our school has 10 Macbooks that we just purchased last summer.  I have virtually  no experience with them as i am a Windows guy!)

I originally setup windows under the original user but now I am trying to get the main person who will be using this machine setup and it is not letting parallels run.

I have followed the instructions found here http://kb.parallels.com/entry/28/434/0/ and also this one http://kb.parallels.com/entry/28/119/.

Now when I try to run windows it gives a configuration error that it cannot find the floppy image.

Please check your configuration!
Floppy image file /users/pawneeheights/documents/parallels/Microsoft windows xp/unattended.fdd could not be found.  Do you want to continue anyway?

If I answer yes then it goes ahead and boots into windows.

Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it??? :wallbash:  :feedback:

thanks,
dave

Thanks Renegade for this program.  Too bad there isn't an option to exclude the weekends and/or holidays. <sigh>

whenever we have had similar problems at school, I had to reset the MTU on the router.  Most by default are set at 1500 but that doesn't mean this is what your ISP's default is.  You could try 1492 or 1484.  It decreases by 8 from 1500.  Our ISP change it at one time and didn't tell anyone, so you can imagine the headaches we had until we figured it out.

I don't know if this is what your answer is or not but it might be worth trying.  For more about MTU's go here http://en.wikipedia....um_transmission_unit

XP also has an individual setting but since it affects more than one machine I would say you need to change it on your router.

I just downloaded and installed Simply Mepis on my Gateway laptop.  Everything works ok BUT the wireless and I cannot figure out how to install it.  It keeps saying "no network device found".  I have installed the "wireless tools" but still no luck.

I like some of the features but the degree of dificulty I am experiencing in getting the wirelss working is unacceptable.    :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / Re: DVD playback software

I was just searching the net today lookng for some DVD playback software.  I did download AVS DVD player which is free.  You can check it out here http://http://w...DVDPlayer/index.aspx .  It does work but I haven't watched a whole movie with it either.

I have also heard that VideoLAN will work and it also is free.  http://www.videolan.org/

Find And Run Robot / FARR- how do I do this...?
« Last post by techidave on March 17, 2008, 02:42 AM »
Forgive me if this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find it if it has.  I am wanting t assign certain programs a certain number that they would always use anytime FARR is opened.  That is Mozilla Firefox would be number 1, Thunderbird is number 2 and so on.  I normally used only 3-6 programs on a regular basis and only occasionally use it to search for others.  I have tried to assign extra points to the score but that hasn't worked either.

What am I missing here ? :(

General Review Discussion / Re: Wovel
« Last post by techidave on March 15, 2008, 01:32 PM »
So Allen, exactly how wide is the shovel or wovel?  I have looked on their website but it doesn't say.  We don't get near the amount of snow down here in Kansas as you do but my body cannot handle the stress of shoveling anymore.  :(

Since I do not own a snow blower or a tractor with a blade, I too am stuck doing it by hand.  I may have to get one of these before next winter.

So out of the 111,449 members, how many are active on the forums?  Do most join to look/find/ask about a specific thing or topic and then become inactive after that?

Thanks Jg, I missed that page.  I searched the forums for some of the older posts and learned a little history in the process.

I have been looking trying to find some history of the origination of DC.  How did it come into existence and by whom, wel you probably get the gest of it.  Was it called something else before DC?

Mouser, are you the resident historian?  :D

Double woops! :-[ :-[  the name of our domain is domain.local but you can call it anything you like.

Once  you type in the name of your domain in the text box it will come up and ask you for a user name and password that is necessary to complete this task.  You can use the one you set up when you setup the server.  It takes a minute to two to complete this task and then after answering ok 2 times you will have to restart your workstation.

This page here says it a lot better than I did above.

woops!  I forgot the second screen shot.  :-[
968
There is a wizard in w2k3 called "managing your server" that helps with the setup.  Just take it in the order shown in the wizard and you will be fine.  Be sure to set a static DNS on the server itself.

see the screenshots that shows how I join them to a domain.  XP by default, is automatically set to WORKGROUP and that will need to be changed as shown.  I do not use the network change ID button its always the change button.

the second attachment shows the name of the domain, in my case doman.local.

this site has some good info on it also: http://windowsitpro....r-server-wizard.html

If someone could point me in the right direction for instructions on how to place pictures in the post, I would be forever grateful.

Hope this makes sense to you.

It seems like I have some info I can send to you or some web links but all that is on a different computer that may be of some help.  I will send you some screen shots of how I join them to the domain also.  That may be more useful than telling you.

the answer to your last question is no.  If its a member of the domain then you would have to unjoin it from the domain for it to be part of a workgroup.  Unless there is another solution that I am not aware of.

thanks Carol for the links.  The first link doesn't because the users need to be able to log in on certain computers in other rooms at different times.  The second link talks about the net user command which would accomplish what I want to do.  I thought of it last nite after I had already posted.  That just confirmed that it would work.

I told you the answer was simple!

I know this forum does not specialize in networking but with the wealth of knowledge here, I new someone would come up with the answer.

You all are the best!

I have been unsuccessful in finding an answer on google for this subject so I thought I would ask here.  I will present what I would like to accomplish.

I have certain XP workstations on our windows network that I would like to prevent users from logging in until a certain time.  We run XP Pro workstations with Windows 2003 Server running Active Directory.  I want to prevent any student from being able to log in and perhaps all users as well until say noon.

I know there is a login hours setting on each user properties account but I would have to do all users and that is not acceptable as they have to be able to log in to lab and library computers during the morning hours.

I have also searched the local policy using gpedit.msc but didn't see a setting there either.

I feel the solution is probably a simple one and I am just over looking it but where?  :tellme:

Thanks Justice for the update.  I am in the process of checking them out but I will wait on your test results also.  Karen Kenworthy of http://www.karenware.com has a program called Net Monitor but to get the email alerts you also need to install her E-Mailer II program.

« Last post by techidave on March 10, 2008, 06:55 AM »
Let me see if I can further complicate the problem.  I could run it on an internal station but if our internet or mail server are down then I won't get the alert.  I am needing to run this program from outside of our network so that I can be sure to get the alert message.   But at home, I am not always logged into the computer, so this program may not always be running. I could run it on my laptop but it isn't always on...

Perhaps there is a web base program??

General Software Discussion / check server to see if its up
« Last post by techidave on March 09, 2008, 10:12 PM »
I am looking for some software that would check at regular intervals to see if a server is "up".  These servers would have a live IP so they could be checked from outside of the school network.  If it is down, then it would send an email or some other form of communication.  Preferrably something that is free or inexpensive.

Has anyone ever done any reviews on this type of software??

Thanks,
Dave

Maybe the word monitor is a better choice than up or down. :-[
