General Software Discussion / Re: Reliable web page capture...
« Last post by tomos on July 17, 2008, 03:53 AM »
I use information management as a slightly more elegant way of saying "data dump". Somewhere I can stick short, medium and long-term data, text and images, everything from project research to software registration data. I want that data indexed and tagged. I want the database to be scalable. Not industrial strength, but I want it to hold a normal person's data, work and personal, over several years without choking.

The more I search, the more I think that looking for one piece of software to do everything is silly, and maybe even counter-productive. When I think about the pieces of software I most enjoy using, they tend to do one simple task well.  AM-Notebook as my note-taker, for example. Not flawless, but a nice, small focused program (and interestingly, by the same person/team as LWA).

I always used Surfulater for information management/"data dump"
Evernote I use for notes & short term web research (e.g. researching monitors)
I'm now using SQLNotes for information & the other two are by the wayside but still with loads of stuff in there

I think I have to take a long look at what I want to do myself & how/if I want to continue using all these programs
SQLNotes is sticking anyways - it okay at web capture but nothing like what you want but then it is in beta, especially in that respect
BTW, I agree with all your points. When you enter content, it should be this (simple) way.

Some of the complexities (which I'll resolve) is that the HTML pane can be used in other ways. For example, you can open an HTML file from disk. Then any changes to the content updates the disk file (EN does not have this feature). You work on what looks like SN [SQLNotes] content, but it is really a local file (and eventually an FTP or other web file). You can also open a URL and view it, in this case, editing is disabled. HTM, MHT (and PDF) files are handled differently too, etc. It has many modes and managing all of these... well... needs a bit of improvements  :(

With all three you can export - I havent use Evernote that way but as rj says it can export MHT files
Surfulater will mail selected articles for you (html) and exports html and MHT
SQLNotes currently exports to html

What problem you was found? Sound volume do not changes, or windows do not switches?
sorry for not explaining properly!

AND to confuse me (& probably you) even more, it's working today :-\
YESTERDAY when I win+scrolled, the volume on Media Player Classic was adjusted instead of AltTab window showing

If it happens again I'll report & try see what else might be going on

You can save a complete webpage with the file menu in Firefox.
Save as-webpage.

me, I'm only really familiar with Surfulater & Evernote:
the advantage of these programmes (I think) is that you can save part (or all) of a web page, you also have a link to the page, you can then organise it, maybe tag it, add a comment, maybe link it to another page, or link a file to it, etc, etc.
I was curious myself what John was after in that sense (apart from the basic web-capture)

1) Buy a desk with a few big drawers
 2) Put the computer in the desk
 3) Put the crap in the drawers

here's a man with drawers ...
Here's my desk

LWA may be a keeper though...

I'm not actually familiar with Ultra Recall but I'm wondering - seeing as it now has good web capture, is it simply a case of you looking for the best out there, or is there something in particular missing in UR?

Tying in with that question, I'm also curious what you mean by "information management" as said in first post

OK - I'll play too (no tidying ... well if I had this image would be really worrying!):
-Carol Haynes (July 16, 2008, 02:35 AM)

well Carol, that's tidy in my books ;)
have a look here -

aP7169826cropM.jpg

overflowing with old bank statements in the overexposed part
I can even say relatively tidy, (thanks Carl ;D )

on the other hand Gizmo is the main editor now (?) sorry, make that "senior" - (not sure what that means, who's the boss?!?)

I get the feeling that Fred Langa joined WS with the intention of phasing himself out of the picture - they all made a few quid out of the deal
This I think (& hope) will be something different
9387
go on, I had to give it a quick try :D

I tried it on resizing windows but starting at the corner where you can pretty much move in any direction

initial impressions are that -

East/West works very well - it "snaps" nicely to the horizontal line

North/South is not so good at snapping to the vertical line, it does snap a little so if careful you can follow the window edge but if there's no window you'd probably be lost
funny,
with Media Player Classic it constrains movement to a 45°/diagonal movement (without Control key this doesnt happen)

 again Skrommel :)
9388
:) Try DragLock!

:D wow :D
I completely missed your post Skrommel
(I think it didint show up in unread posts because I had left the tab open & restarted FF)
it's late now so looking forward to trying that out tomorrow
it's sort of like getting a nice unexpected christmas present :-* thanks!
Tom

thanks Curt - funny that it worked with the wrong extension :) explains why it didnt work in Media Player Classic though

there is a nifty tool by Nirsoft that scans the cache folders of IE & Mozilla and list all the files currently stored in those folders.

IECacheView
MozillaCacheView

Lanux -
that sounds good, esp for FF cache where files dont seem to be recognisable
PS/edit
thanks for the player tips in the other thread too

Wouldn't it be easier just using an online website such as www.downloadyoutubevideos.com and then using VLC to watch them (assuming you don't want to get into techy details on converting and whatnot)?
-wreckedcarzz (July 14, 2008, 03:02 PM)
yes,
much easier  thanks Brandon
Downloads as FLV files which open in Media Player Classic or VLC
Both playback with very oversaturated colours & VLC in particular is very dark image - (I've laready asked elsewhere :-[ but could you recommend any other player ?)

Then this happened, and at the moment, WS doesn't even acknowledge that I'm a paying Gizmo subscriber, and I never got the paid-member link.  I guess the WS crew don't think I count. (shrug)

they, dont - that's up to Gizmo - i.e. you get the mail from him - I got mine on the 10th - seems like it shouldnt take this long to get around to everyone?

in fact it was quite oddly done - my mail to my Windows Secrets email address came from Gizmo as well and had no mention of Windows Secrets in the subject line ...
as said above
I got two identical [well, I thought] mails headed "Gizmo's Support Alert Newsletter Special Announcement, 9th July 2008"

The link for managing my subscription from first "special announcement" mail, didnt recognise my Support Alert subscription and asks me to subscribe/donate - turns out this is sent to Windows Secrets subscribers where I'm not a paid subscriber.
The other mail recognised my subscription

One more:

1-Click YouTube Batch Downloader (free)

http://eurekr.com/download.html

downloads youtube videos and claims to convert to any format in the process.

from www.shellcity.net

this seems to have some online/sharing thing going on - you have to create user name & password & only the first explanatory video on their website is working  -here- that may not be their fault, I'm having some trouble on & off with youtube

Living Room / Re: Radiohead Nude - by Epson, Hp, Spectrum & harddrives

It's the song "Nude" by Radiohead. :) Part of the lyrics say "Don't get any big ideas. They're not gonna happen."

I know  I figured that out (disclaimer: just in case people think I'm really dumb :P it was only initially when I first saw it - )

Media Player Classic will play .swf
http://fileforum.bet..._2000XP/1045531002/1
-tinyvillager (March 02, 2006, 05:55 PM)

okay, this is veering off-topic but seeing as I found the info here :)

I managed to find in Opera cache the flash file from this page
http://www.vimeo.com...mbed&sec=1109226 as mentioned by justice in Radiohead Nude - by Epson, Hp, Spectrum & harddrives

as said found in opera cache, without extension so I added that (.swf) and tried it in Media Player classic without success
then I tried VLC Media Player (VLC_Portable_0.8.6h, from portable apps) and it played but the colour is appalling - very dark & very over-saturated

just wondering does anyone have any other player tips ?

This Glaswegian student graduated on a bunch of pc components doing a live performance of Radiohead - Nude

okay, when I first saw this -
I thought the guy is nude doing this performance - no big surprise - he's been to Art school...
after seeing the video - with the title "Big Ideas (don't get any)" I presumed this to be the name of the song and I was thinking, so, how do we know he's actually nude while doing all this  ;D  ...

Tech Support Alert has had a paid premium section for a long time, and if you like it, as everybody on this thread seems to, why haven't you supported it by paying for the premium stuff (which I find definitely worthwhile)?
-Tiesenhausen (July 12, 2008, 04:01 PM)

not sure if that's directed at me (or just more generally) - in case, yes, I have a subscribtion, & definitely worthwhile as you say

re springing money to see what somethings like - ok, it doesnt have to be much but I'd find it hard to do - personally I think they'd be better off doing something like giving everyone a few issues of the paid version so people get a taste of it & then splitting it up into paid/unpaid

but as we all keep saying - we'll see :D

Living Room / Re: Is More Memory Better? - a bit-tech.net article
« Last post by tomos on July 13, 2008, 04:07 AM »
Depends on how long you want the new computer to last, I guess, and what you're going to use it for.

I wouldn't go below 2gig for a new machine today, and 4 gigs is probably a good idea if you're planning to run Vista... but of course you can add RAM later, so you could always start with two gigs. The big question is probably whether to buy DDR2 or DDR3 RAM, and which speed...

could there be a problem though if mixing different types of memory? or do you mean decide now & when you upgrade ram get the same type?
