General Software Discussion / Re: Is Nero 10 returning to good form?
« Last post by Innuendo on June 07, 2010, 08:18 PM »
I do read the incessant ramblings of certain persons, however, about it not being compatible with AnyDVD. This is a complaint which urks me as AnyDVD should not be forced to work with a piece of software that is deprecated.

OMG, Josh! You just gave me flashbacks. Fortunately, I haven't heard anything from that person in a while regarding that. Maybe he finally realized InCD is irrelevant.

Copywhiz is free for all customers who purchased PikySuite in last 3 months. Since 1st March 2010.

Thumbs up for giving a grace period like that. I don't think even the most generous software developers would have a grace period that would give Curt a free upgrade.  ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Specs for new pc?
« Last post by Innuendo on June 06, 2010, 07:10 PM »
Ars Technica is becoming more and more irrelevant since they were bought out by Conde Nast.

All the cool kids, including the ones who used to use Ars religiously for PC build guides now use www.tech-report.com. Here's a link to I believe the latest one - here.

Added bonus: Unlike Ars who didn't build a single build they recommended (which led to a LOT of non-working, buggy build complaints in their forums) Tech-Report builds it & only then recommends it.

FWIW, InCD has defaulted to unselected when installing Nero.

Talk about irrelevant. Nobody discusses/uses packet writing software anymore.

Living Room / Re: Honestly, who here actually owns an iPad? be honest!
« Last post by Innuendo on June 06, 2010, 01:04 PM »
I just think it's hilarious that the question was "Who owns an iPad" and only anti-iPadders show up for comment  ;D ;D

Probably because the way original post was worded there was an implication of a plea for us to be honest and reveal our secred iPad lust.

It's only natural people will post replies stating "I've been honest all along! I really truly & sincerely do not own a steenkin' iPad and never will."

I don't see what the attraction is. You have to hold it always if you want to be comfortable. Hands-free operation means having to lay it down somewhere which isn't the ideal ergonomic environment for me.

You can only run apps from the Apple Store. I cannot run the same programs I love & rely on that are installed on my PC so data interchangeability is going to be either limited or nil.

The only use I can see for one is an iPad would make a great prop when nerds go to SciFi conventions dressed up as their favorite Star Trek & Stargate characters.

$500 for a fashion accessory is a little steep, but hey....Apple built an entire business around charging steep prices for fashion accessories.

It would make sense if you sum up the complete thread instead of just the original post as the thread has taken different turns.
-conceptworld (June 06, 2010, 11:10 AM)

If you'd like. I'll gladly do so, but the picture summing up the complete thread paints is no prettier than summing up the original post.

I don't think the thread has taken any turns at all. Oh, the road may have been a winding one with a few curves, but no turns. Functionality was removed from the original product for reasons unknown. You state that it was because they were lesser used features. That may indeed be the case, but I haven't ever seen a person who was happy their purchased product (especially one they have to pay an upgrade fee for) has less functionality. People are always happy when a product has been made easier to use, but ease of use does not mean fewer features.

No one in this thread has stated they are happy those features have been removed, but to be fair no one has stated they are unhappy, either. What definitely has happened in this thread is that at least one person has started exploring competing products.

It's still a pig. Sure, you can download each smaller component separately so you only get the suckling pigs you want, but pigs are pigs & the software activation isn't more convenient or any easier.

yes, how did you save it??? :o

I hope not by taking a screenshot...

Unfortunately, that was the only way to do it as when you enlarge the image you aren't shown the image itself but rather a weird Java/Flash abomination. Guess it protects the seller's images from casual thievery.

This is one of only two firewalls that can pass all leak tests. This is a good deal for those too impatient to wait for the lifetime license for Outpost Security Suite to come around again (if ever).

General Software Discussion / Re: Can i upgrade to MS-DOS v6 or v6.22
« Last post by Innuendo on June 05, 2010, 12:56 PM »
Hulkbuster, sorry all the version numbers have messed you up. MS-DOS 6.22 was the last command-line based OS Microsoft released before it released Windows 95. It's useless in this day and age.

If you are looking for a way to upgrade your command-line experience and regain commands and functionality that have been removed by Microsoft you may want to venture over to http://www.jpsoft.com and check out Take Command which works with modern versions of Windows. It'll do everything you are wanting and much more. They even offer a free version if your needs are modest.

Anyone who did not own an Amiga has indeed missed out on one of the most enjoyable (and mismanaged) computer platforms in the history of Man.

The Bitmap Brothers were geniuses in their genre.

Living Room / Re: Approaches to computer builds
« Last post by Innuendo on June 05, 2010, 12:35 PM »
The most practical & frugal approach to purchasing or building a new computer is to list out all the activities you perform on your computer along with all the programs you use to accomplish those activities.

Take the most demanding resource-hogging programs & research them on the 'net (reviews - user & professional and forums) to gauge the level of performance you desire for those programs. This will tell you the minimum level of components you need to achieve the level of computer enjoyment you desire. Bump up this level of performance by getting faster/better components till you reach the top of your comfortable budget level and this extra bump will give you room to grow. Room to grow means longer you'll get to enjoy your computer before being forced to upgrade again.

Very few people really need 8 cores. Not many more people than that will fully utilize 6 or even 4 cores. For most average users a fast duo-core processor is the best bang for the buck with the best level of performance.

Don't let Intel's & AMD's marketing talk you into a bajillion cores because for most people they'll sit there idle doing nothing most of the time.

tl;dr version: Let your programs dictate what you buy rather than what marketing materials tell you.
942
That is very odd. But Kaspersky has a history doing things like that from time to time.

I know it's no solution to your problem, but that blank page behavior is not present with Outpost Security Suite active.

Next I suppose the steering wheel shaped controller will be blamed when some 4-year old crashes their parents car.

In any sane world that father would be jailed  >:(

I came in here to post a long rant, but Eóin summed it all up in a small little package in the first reply.

Don't know how portable in practice it is, but Crystal Disk Info allows to unzipped and run from a directory.

It looks like it'll do what you want as long as you don't use the "Startup" or "Event Log" features.

Oh, and it's freeware.  :)

interesting. i did assume they'd be cheaper in the US. good luck with the HP screen then.

Why did you assume that? Eizo is a European company, isn't it?

Living Room / Re: two-monitors ergonomics
« Last post by Innuendo on May 31, 2010, 10:39 PM »
I'd love to try out an Eizo, but they are extremely cost prohibitive here in the U.S...even more so than they are in Europe. I think a major problem is that the brick & mortar stores only sell units with TN panels. Definitely the bottom of the barrel quality-wise....

I've got my eye set on an HP zr24w right now. It seems to be one of the better units out there & doesn't have a bad price, either. I just need to find a place that sells it at a decent price that has a good return policy.

Yes, I agree. but some people I've read act as if Google has already acted in a manner which would warrant treating them as something other than a search company. Treating them as if they've already broken the law.

I don't treat Google as though they were a criminal. However, I do treat them as if I were a merchant & they were a patron entering my store. I don't immediately assume they are going to try to steal from me, but that doesn't mean I'm going to turn off the security cameras, either. :)
