Living Room / Re: Looking for Refrigerator Magnets that work
« Last post by J-Mac on September 27, 2010, 12:44 PM »
Best I have found here:  http://www.supermagnetman.net/index.php?cPath=25

Super strong (the ones that look like push-pins). Also, the ones that have little hooks on them. Really excellent and not expensive. I have been dealing with this site for a while now and they are reliable.

Wow...that is a kick ass magnet store.  I love magnets, always have.  I have a box of magnets I've collected since I was a kid.  I even wrote a short story about magnets...eesh ;)

For real? Is your short story on the web? I'd like to read it. Post it on your blog somewhere and give us a link!

Thanks!

app103 - a microwave oven can do the same.

I am surprised at all the trepidation over some tiny little refrigerator magnets! Come on folks! Refrigerator magnets!! I would hazard a guess - out on a limb here - that many more people are killed in auto accidents than by their refrigerator magnets, but I'll wager that no one gives driving their cars that much cautious forethought!!  :P

Thanks!

BTW, having just purchased Sagelight I sure do hope that this is the Lifetime licensed version. Doesn’t say anything about that in the registration email, nor in the About screen. Actually the About screen doesn’t even mention that it is a licensed version at all. (Doesnt say it is a trial version either at least...)

Thank you.

I just went ahead and purchased Sagelight based on Rob's post. See - taking the time for that got you at least one new purchase/user, Rob!

I had passed when the Gizmo version was available; the UI really doesn’t impress me at all. Very non-intuitive compared to the various other editors I have used. But... the results look great and since I presently don’t have an editor that I feel is worth a darn I figured I would try to tolerate the UI since the product is great otherwise.   :)

I realize that's not the most lifting review of Sagelight but I felt I had to tell it like I see it.

Thanks!

Curt, II' not sure what the link is - this went to the blog. CWuesterfield said the dev. had made some blog posts but that thet forum was at first ignored and then gone. I can't find the forum either! I thought that maybe you had found it.  :(

Doesn’t seem like the guy is abandoning it since he is posting articles in his blog, but it is weird that he dumped the forum without warning. Unless he did announce the removal of the forum and I just missed it, which is definitely a possibility.

Thanks!

Nope, but like Gwen I am weird.   :P

I would like to hear of others' uses for it as a custom key in AHK or similar.  :)

Thanks!

Now tipping is comparable to bribing public officials and law enforcement? Oh man, even Mr. Pink didn't go there.

This thread gets better with each post! I almost expect Godwin's Law to come into play soon!   :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Any Way to Manually Edit a *.adu Spell Check File?
« Last post by J-Mac on September 16, 2010, 03:55 PM »
I saw that Jes - and that's not even like the simple utility they had before. That one allowed opening the adu file where it looked just like a regular text file opened in Notepad. This one looks like it does more but the UI is more like the spell checker edit windows you see in programs now. They really don’t like to make things easy, do they?

Oh, and $50 USD for this app now? Crazy! I was hoping someone knew of a way to edit the adu file as is. Maybe convert it from binary to something human-readable? Grasping at the wind, I guess.

Oh well - I am NOT tipping Addictive Software this time!!  :P :P ;D ;D

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Any Way to Manually Edit a *.adu Spell Check File?
« Last post by J-Mac on September 16, 2010, 01:40 PM »
Spell Check files can be a PITA at times. Most software allows you to edit or add to the user or custom spell check file, but one word at a time. I currently have one master Custom.dic ll my own custom entries: family and friend's names, place names, slang words, cuss words, and any other words not normally found in a Spell Check dictionary file. I update the Custom.dic file of any new software by copying the contents of my "master" file into the new program's Custom.dic file. Works well for me.

However some programs use a *.adu/*.adm file for their spell checker, and that can't be edited in a standard text editor. There use to be a utility available free from Addictive Software that let me add bulk text manually to *.adu files but that does not appear to be available anymore. I have a program now that uses *.adu files for both the main and user's custom spell check dictionaries and I would like to add my "master" list of words to the custom or user's dictionary but I can't find a program that will let me edit - or even read - the *.adu file.

Anyone know of something that would help?

Thanks!

I tip anyone and everyone who serves me food. Bar none.

Yes, I tip at McDonald's, I tip at food stands, I tip at all take-out counters. Get over it and stop acting like a buch of cheap bastards!!

BTW, the quote in my last post was from the very memorable diner/tipping scene in "Reservoir Dogs".

As Joe Cabot said to Mr. Pink regarding tipping the waitress...

"Shut up. What do you mean, you don't believe in it? Cough up a buck, you cheap bastard."

Damn! Just read that Wachovia/Wells Fargo story. I hadn't heard about that at all. Didn't make big news though I don’t understand why.

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: How do you add a post in a Google Groups thread???
« Last post by J-Mac on September 11, 2010, 12:48 PM »
4wd, this isn't Usenet - it's a Google Group. I have used Usenet for many years (and still do using Agent Forte) and I do realize that Google purchased DejaNews and/or all its archives, but Google Groups doesn’t follow Usenet conventions. I can also understand why people would like it to do so - I do! But in the meantime if Superboy wants to post to the MLO group he has to do it in Google Groups. I don’t believe there is anyway to reply to the group via Usenet. Although he can reply to it via email if he has elected to receive posts via email.

And Superboy is the one that said the "Reply to Author" would send a "private mail" rather than a posting to the group. If he had tried it he would have seen that it does indeed post to the group. And Superboy never mentioned Usenet at all IIRC. He only compared it to Apple (for some reason!) Not sure why you are replying for him there with Usenet examples.

Thank you.

It's very simple - that "Reply to Author" link is how you reply. What makes you think that it sends a private message instead of a reply? Did you try it?!?!

Works for me every time. It has nothing to do with the owner not wishing anything! Where did that come from? Google Groups is not a great discussion board format by any means, but one thing it is? Pretty simple to use!

My solution to snazzy website craze is to use text based browser like Elinks. Since I have started using it I waste less time in websites as well. If I am desperate adn need to see that flash site I use FF.

That's pretty hard core. I could never get used to Lynx or anything like it.

Heck, I got very used to all of the text browsers - until graphical browsers were born! Let's face it: When it was all that was available and no one had seen any real graphical browsers, then the text browsers were pretty damn awesome!

That's actually not surprising. Given the ability of FF to host all kinds of extensions, you never know what could be going on.

Really think so? Sure was a surprise to me!

Eset NOD32 that I use recently popped up a dialog saying that there was a file that needed to be submitted for review to Eset. I clicked Next to bring up the file submission window and the file was 'firefox.exe' from the Program Files directory! I ignored it but it kept reminding me every few days - so I finally submitted it. Wonder what they will find?

A big part of the problem is that some web developers seem to think that Flash is a great way to create web pages. I've seen entire sites of downloadable Flash web templates. Crazy.

PayPal has been pretty darn good for me. The very few issues I have had have been resolved satisfactorily IMO and were resolved quickly. I realize that this is of no comfort to anyone having bigger difficulties with them - that can happen with any company. But this is certainly not a reason to start yelling about how "ugly" they are. With the extremely vast amounts of transactions and money they handle the complaints I have read about do not seem disproportionate. Maybe I'm just not seeing it.

Thank you.

You can buy a custom-built rig and specify exactly what you want installed. My last box was built by Falcon Northwest and had nothing pre-installed on it that I didn't request from them.

Thanks!

I actually have an account with Experts Exchange, though I am not sure it is still active. Way back when I joined most people didn't have to pay anything but instead could collect "points" for providing selected answers/solutions. Of course it was kinda like S&H Green Stamps - I remember seeing something like "You now have 550 points toward your Expert goal of 6,000,000,000 points." However whenever I clicked on a Google search result and ended up there I could always log in and see all the replies/answers. I don’t know if that is still the case though.

As for About.com, I have seen some marginally helpful pages but TBH most of the time their "experts" aren't really that at all and instead have a page full of very broad brush summary information. I have only seen a few comprehensive categories there.

Thank you.
