You probably clicked on the link and it fired up your download manager, Rapidshare doesn't really support download managers unless you're a premium user. The original file size is 4MB+, you probably got a web page disguised as a rar file.

C / C++ / Re: Managing Large code with Object Oriented Programming
« Last post by nosh on May 30, 2008, 10:34 PM »
This isn't OOP related but I've been meaning to ask something similar - I'd written a somewhat lengthy 16-bit program, a chess game with a very basic UI which followed the rules of play but the PC side didn't really have a brain ( ;D ) - it would just make the first legal move - I wanted to enhance it and give it a basic brain a couple of years after I wrote it but realised I'd have to wade through most of the code again to actually get a grip on things & dumped it coz it was too painful to do that. It was well commented but the only way I could (maybe) have got up to speed fast was if I had done some kind of detailed flowcharting. Do any of you flowchart or do any kind of preliminary documentation before getting on with the syntax? How do you cope with getting back to really old code?

Well, you're in luck coz it was covered indepth by Ghacks a couple of days after I mentioned it. :)

I use Guardian. I have tested the main feature (message a pre-programmed number silently if an unrecognized sim is inserted) and it works very well. Only catch, your phone has to be running a Symbian OS - but I would expect something similar to exist for other platforms too. Ghacks mentions a utility for Sony Ericsson too.

nudone's right. KMPlayer does allow this. I had 'time stretching' disabled, works well once you enable it.

KMPlayer (shift++) gives me the chipmunk effect.

Try Winamp with the Pacemaker plugin as a last resort - it allows you to increase the tempo without affecting pitch, does it really well for audio files. I tried it with some videos and had mixed results mainly coz I use KMPlayer for video and Winamp does not care for my codecs. When the videos did play the pitch sounded normal.

Edit: 200% limit, unless they've updated the plugin.

But what if the consumers are poor too - poor starving developers with poor starving uneducated sick malformed children & a granny in hospital vs poor starving uneducated tots with poor starving malnourished relatives, three of them in rehab. What is the right thing to do then? Will the penniless shantydwellers downgrade to a Hayes Accura 228 for a month and do the right thing or will everybody just... starve? Who will live and who will die? And will that ebook get read already!!?

These instances don't occur too often.

My $ 0.02 : Delete post - Delete user - get on with life.
I don't see how having to check a popup box would deter these guys.

Making everyone click a popup everytime they post a hyperlink = worst possible outcome. People are lazy enough about hyperlinking as it is.

Just created this slightly NSFW wp for dual mons - my friend clicked the original at the Louvre or at some other museum in Paris (not sure about the copyright bit - pl. take it down if you believe it's in violation.) Anyhoo, here's my mostly twisted creativity at its "best."  :P

The last patch from lvllord works just fine. I applied it after Carol confirmed it worked and there haven't been any hiccups.

Can winamp be put in tray?

Try the Advanced Controls plugin, it has the usual play controls (including a progress slider) & you can also use it to delete the file currently playing right off the HDD. Luckily they have a Foobar2000 [[[  :-* ]]] version too, since I dumped Winamp long back.

Ghacks covered a tiny app today that did a pretty good job showing me my boot time, popping up only after Firefox (the last to load) was ready to go.

There is the *nosh grabs the opportunity to use big words he doesn't really understand* MS Dynamics RMS incompatibility issue they could have fixed (and maintained the same build nos?...naah!) Which has the later modified timestamp?

Living Room / Re: Shutdown Day!
« Last post by nosh on May 03, 2008, 12:40 AM »
Shouldn't they have announced a cut-off point for shutting down? As in, if I realise it's shutdown day at 11:40 PM and restart 20 minutes later, am I perhaps using up more power restarting everything? Some people have NO concern for the planet!
Not really necessary to define explicit period with timezones and all that... just spend _your_ entire may3 without turning on your computer. Like, 24 hours straight.

You took me a bit too literally there, f0dder! :)

Doesn't this kind of nullify their theory about the ribbon making commands super-accessible?  ;D

Very handy feature nonetheless, Cybernet's covered it too.

General Software Discussion / Re: XPPro SP3
« Last post by nosh on April 28, 2008, 06:17 PM »
I've installed it on two PCs now and am not having any issues with startup time on either, the first reboot doesn't really count. No noticeable difference in performance either - what was that figure people were throwing around? 40%? Bwaha! ;D

Slightly inconsistent behaviour though, on one PC it gave me a screen offering to enable auto-updates and switched on the firewall/AV nags that I'd disabled years back. On the second PC it didn't do any of this but there's a little Messenger icon showing in the tray that I'll have to weed out tomorrow.

tomos, that's pretty much all it seems to be for - getting windows uptodate. Except, it's MS - so, backup!  :)
