I think what surprises me here is the distribution of prices.

There are some excellent freeware viewers, and even good freeware catalogers (Farstone seems decent, although I was a bit surprised you cannot donate less than $10 in their donate what you want form ). However none of these have decent support for tagging (IPTC etc. support), or the few that support it have only very rough filtering support so the tags don't do you much good.

The ones that actually do offer decent tagging and filtering capabilities all of a sudden bump to $150 and up.

It doesn't seem like the kind of functionality that is so hard to develop that it justifies that kind of cost increase, but that might just be me.

Just for reference, here is what I (think I) am looking for:

  • Store thumbnails in a database or similar to provide fast browsing (i.e. must not reread image folder every time you browse)
  • Support annotation and tagging using a standard method (IPTC/XMP/...) (i.e. not storing it in some proprietary file that no other program can read, and provide no export option)
  • Decent searching and filtering on any metadata, including full support for multiple conditions
  • Non-destructive, must not change the original image data in any way without explicitly being told to
  • I don't particularly care much for editing functions (I have dedicated software for that), but if present they much be non-destructive
  • Preferably a dedicated piece of software, and not an image editor with a half-hearted cataloger stapled on

??
I don't know what I'd use for organization.  That's why i'm following this thread.  I'm not a big photo user, so i don't have a lot of pictures.  But if I did, I don't know what program I'd use.  Tagging, cataloging, etc.  I don't do any of that.  My photos are organized just by folders and files.  I'm actually amazed that nobody has recommended a clear cut favorite in this thread...it's been a while!  In my experiences, I've found that the applications that can do this well are really really slow.  Like Lightroom.

Much the same for me. I have 6-7 gigs of images at the moment that are organized pretty much only by folder structure.

I would love to find a really good piece of software to tag and organize them which is why I'm following this :).

The ones I've tried have either been buggy/klunky, without decent search/filter options, unable to handle more than a few thousand files, or $200.

.rar is not a common format unless the user is a software pirate on Windows.  :D
That's something of a stretch.

Packing files for redistribution is also a question of the supported platforms. Neither PAQ nor 7zip are actually an option, .7z on Linux is still quite unusual.

There has been some work to give 7z a more gzip/bzip2 like interface to make it easier to adopt in linux etc.:

Which works fine for copying text or doing find/replace, but pretty much not anything else - definitely not comparable to a column editing mode :)

What can you do in UE that is more advanced?
931
But I wanted something for home too. The feature I most apreciated in UE was the block colum mode, mentioned in an earlier post.

Whuile searching for a text editor replacement, Crimson Editor was the only thing I found that was free and had colum editing mode.

Just for the record, if you hold down Alt while selecting in Notepad++ it uses column mode (so Alt-Shift-cursor keys for instance).
932
I'm using Notepad++ .. I use it for small coding jobs and light text editing, and it feels like it has a good set of features for a small editor .

If the third parameter of the DateTime_SetRange macro is supposed to be a two-element array, shouldn't it be &st[0]?

When you specify GDTR_MIN it uses the first element, which works ok even though you point at the second, but when you specify GDTR_MAX it uses the second, which is outside the array if I understand it right.

Posting the results the day after one of the discounts expired was inspired .

You can sign up for the full evaluation to try the ISO. I know it says "enterprise only", but if you read their forums people say that's mostly to stop everybody from requesting it (you can even select Home User under your type of organization).

Only annoying thing about upgrading to 2010 would be this:

Upgrade from older versions of SoftMaker Office, TextMaker, PlanMaker:

€ 49.95
U.S. and Canadian customers: US$ 49.95

That's 30% extra for the upgrade for European customers :(.
943
Nice one  .. I wonder if it's possible to upgrade to 2010 from this one since it's marked as a charity release.

Edit: I guess I should try actually reading the page first :-[

You are entitled to free tech support and to future upgrades at reduced prices.

Saw that in action yesterday .. the way that facebook popup describes it is just wrong.

After you've done the popup and changed everything from "visible to everybody" to "use my old settings", go into privacy settings, under Applications and Websites->What your friends can share about you, and you can remove the default of every app being able to share all your information despite of the other settings *grumble*.

Thanks for the explanation, that certainly sounds scary .. I'm glad I've never uploaded any pictures of our son at the beach or anything then.

They have a lot of privacy options about who can see your stuff, who can share it etc., I changed them all to nobody but family before I uploaded my first image.

However if privacy is a concern, just forget Flickr. Your photos can be found and grabbed by anyone on the internet regardless of your privacy settings.

That's interesting, I didn't find anything about such problems back when I was first looking at Flickr .. do you have a link to any information about it?

I am using Flickr as well, mainly because I like their permission system and felt it gave the amount of control over who could see my pictures I wanted.

But I would love to hear about experiences with other services; I looked at picasa for instance, but the free offering of 1GB storage was too small for me.

Also, the picasa TOS has one of those "anything you upload we, and our affiliates, can use for anything we like" clauses, which I am not a fan of .. Flickr might have one as well, I just didn't find it yet :D.

It is an interesting choice to release a language with compilers available for only Linux and OS X .. I would have expected a Windows installer to be the first thing they would make sure to offer :D.

Just for reference, I mailed them Thursday requesting a license, and they replied "Sure! What is your company name?". When I replied Friday, they told me I was too late.

Their software is too advanced for my needs anyway, so I am not really fussed about not getting a license, but I thought the way they handled it was .. interesting.
