Didn't u know women perceive colour better than men?  ;)

This is supposed to be true which is why I'd love to see some demographics to see how pronounced the difference really is.

Scored 4, not too bad. The demographics bit didn't make much sense, not sure if it's even working?

General Software Discussion / Re: Mathematics symbols OCR
« Last post by Eóin on September 15, 2008, 08:46 AM »
Having gone through a math course and now working on a postgraduate in that field my experience has been that you cannot beat handwritten in terms of the speed and clarity at which you can record it as it's being say written up on a blackboard.

If typing up notes in your own time Word is good, LaTeX is fantastic but almost certainly overkill. Something like SciWriter would be my first recommendation though. But you can't use these programs at speed, drawing the equations is more like putting together a jigsaw than freehand drawing.

My guess is an OCR app which only OCRs what it understands and stores the rest as inline images might be the overall fastest cheap solution to generate digital copies, but also the lowest in quality.

Very cool, didn't know we had at least three other members from Ireland. A question, and I'm possibly making a show of myself by having to ask but why are some pins green?

I'm just toying here so don't take it too serious but to what extent do you want the OCR to 'understand' the math? I mean do you want (A) a program which can phrase the symbols and together with their positions it could reproduce the equation in pdf or postscript say? Or (B) are you interested in a program which could phrase the scanned image into TeX or MathML?

I only ask as the first sounds feasible though I don't know of any such applications myself. The second however would be really cool, but I can barely begin to imagine how difficult it might be.

Ah Dormouse posted while I was typing, that's a very impressive program :)

There is already an extension out there which those functions, Stealther, but it has a number of issues from what I can tell. Having such functionality built in is probably more practical.

Maybe it's just me but I can't help but feel that if you install an application which you acknowledge will have internet access then the extra step of it updating itself is trivial. I mean unless you have studied it's code in detail there is little new that could happen as result of an update that couldn't have been in the original install.

Also it would important be to track in which images the headset is CG'd onto her head. I'm think of bluetooth here headsets which are real easy to photoshop in ;) I've seen more than a few in my time.

Give us the old solitaire.

I'm a Vista convert, switched to Vista x64 when I got my newest PC and love it. Had to copy the old version of solitaire from my XP box though, the Vista one is awful :D

I'm surprised by Discovery backing down, but at least controversy like this means the story will get more publicity than it could ever have hoped for.

At least if it is open source and google stick in some stong profiling or adverts then someone else will just remove them and re-compile it.

I agree, a high profile project like this will be watched by many eyes. It may not be perfect, but we will know about any issues.

Perhaps the most interesting thing that can be learned from a history of predictions is just how misplaced our present concerns end up being. Be it because we come up with solutions or, as the past would seem to suggest, a new technology comes along which so completely changes the playing field that we end up with a completely new and unrelated set of concerns.

In any collection of predictions there are always some ridiculous one but what impressed me are the ones which got concepts bang on even if the small details are off.

Some of these are fascinating. Attached is a scan but also linked is a typed up version which is much easier to read.

Predictions of the Year 2000
from The Ladies Home Journal  of December 1900

The Ladies Home Journal from December 1900, which contained a fascinating article by John Elfreth Watkins, Jr. “What May Happen in the Next Hundred Years”.

Mr. Watkins wrote: “These prophecies will seem strange, almost impossible. Yet, they have come from the most learned and conservative minds in America. To the wisest and most careful men in our greatest institutions of science and learning I have gone, asking each in his turn to forecast for me what, in his opinion, will have been wrought in his own field of investigation before the dawn of 2001 - a century from now. These opinions I have carefully transcribed.”

General Software Discussion / Re: What would your ideal Operating System be like?
« Last post by Eóin on August 14, 2008, 04:23 AM »
1) no appearance customization /skinning. enforce a completely standardized user interface.  I think predictability of user interface and good guidelines for coders is important.
...
6) a focus on providing a clean object oriented API for programs.  The entire focus of the operating system should be in providing a clean efficient interface to coders.

Not sure I agree there, sure making life easier for programmers could mean more quality programs but would it really? Honestly I don't think so.

And at the end of the day I can't see users caring how difficult or not the OS is for developers.

I've particularly bad spelling myself so can't take any moral high ground. :D

I switched to Vista after SP1 came out and I got a new PC even though I had bought Vista back at the very beginning, I just never used it.

It grew on me very quickly I have to say once I gave it a fair go, now I love it.

Heythat using a bridge technique was really neat. I was just building brute-force, 'loads of wheels' vehicles, your solution is much more elegant, here's it tweaked just for fun (not really any better :) )
