Living Room / Re: Firefox CPU usage
« Last post by brotherS on April 18, 2006, 02:34 AM »
Sorry I can't help with the CPU usage problem, but Mark sent me this link the other day from LifeHacker showing you how you can reduce the RAM that Firefox uses up. It's pretty neat to see it go from 150MB down to 6-8MB just by minimizing it:

Sounds great, I will try that too!

maybe we should think of some ideas for segments:

1) get a digital handheld recorder and go on the street and do some interviews with people.
suggested questions:

[...]

see if you get some funny answers.
You mean like
Q: "Did you ever park on the Gaza Strip?"
A: "No, no, I never do that!!"

A friend of mine saw that happening in one of those funny TV shows! ;D

In the future you'll likely see automated article classification added, which should be interesting indeed.
Sounds great! Based on keywords in the articles already saved that should be possible with a good hit ratio.

[...] I watched a guy who was in love with it show off a bit.  He talked about finding a topic quickly pressed a couple of search keys and started typing his word. (He knew where the cursor would be and that he could type right away [...]
Where did you watch me working with AutoHotkey?!? :o

Spoiler
;D ;D

Thanks, mouser!

I followed a link on that site and found http://www.useit.com...ertbox/20040217.html :

Summary:
E-newsletters that are informative, convenient, and timely are often preferred over other media. However, a new study found that only 11% of newsletters were read thoroughly, so layout and content scannability are paramount.

Obviosly the reading pattern will have something to do with how the layout of the site is done. I'd be much more interested in some tests that show how easily users lose interest / are confused by various site layouts. For example, something like slashdot tries to cram too much information onto the screen - but it's still only a pretty mild case.
You are totally right. A site has to 'come to the point' in a reasonably amount of time - and with bazillions of other sites out there the user is just one click away from going to another/a better one.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Tweak Tool?

I'm looking forward to see the first forum software applying something like Google Mail's auto-save feature! For those who aren't using Google Mail: it automatically saves a draft of what you have typed every two minutes or when you click the save button. Just a small step for forum soft, but a giant leap for users who don't save/copy long texts often enough!

:D

FF has Save Text Area extension:
https://addons.mozil...rg/addon.php?id=1046

i havent tried it, probably it can autosave everything. :)
But the description sounds like you need to save it once manually before autosave could kick in - so it's just 50% of the solution I had in mind :)

Cool!! Thanks for sharing!

I love their Step 8:

Step 8 Dial 911

[Due to the violent nature of this step, we have not included a picture]  Using any sharp implement [scissors, knife, axe, etc] cut the refil to be the same length as the original ink.  [please use adult supervision]

Actually I've probably gone a bit overboard in that respect.  My setup is

Drive C: OS and things such as the startmenu files
D: Applications related to the management of the computer itself eg my backup software
E: regular applications eg MS Office
F: data, My  Documents etc
G: downloaded software
H: essential downloads (stuff I've purchased and backup more carefully)

And that's just disk 1.
WOW!!  :D

After using different setups over the years I now settled on this:

C: OS and all installed programs
D: all data, downloads, installer files, ...
E: for Windows page-file only

I like to keep it as simple as possible, this setup also comes in handy since my HD always tends to be full. :)

Living Room / Re: Firefox - Useful customized searching
« Last post by brotherS on April 17, 2006, 05:17 AM »
Before the smart keywords you needed to manually customize a keyword for a quick search to do the trick.

I did that - but you do have to be careful in the keyword you choose. Try DC as a keyword and see what happens.

I read about your strange experience above - I'm using a tiny AutoHotkey script to search DC :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Calendar LAUNCHED!
« Last post by brotherS on April 17, 2006, 04:19 AM »
I just spent some time playing with the google calendar.  I have to say they have a nice interface, (ajax rocks ) but thus far there is no way to sync with my Treo, so the interface is just not useful to me.  I will stick with http://www.airset.com until google develops enough functionality to replace it.  What I really wish is that airset would adopt the ajax interface style of the google calendar or of http://kiko.com
I guess I will just watch and wait
AirSet's feature "Sync with Outlook and Palm desktop" sounds good, lets see what Google will add :)

Also looking for more people to join the team. Unfortuneately, to begin with, it wouldn't be a paid position. But you would gain more experience in Web 2.0 technologies - and as working as a team.
Too bad I can only code with AHK  :-[

http://www.listible.com has these two related lists:

Helpful to find some nice services:

When writing long forum posts, they go to notepad and get a ctrl+s. I almost always start out in the quick reply, sometimes move (ctrl-a, ctrl-c, ctrl-v) to the "normal" reply (if I need to attach files etc), sometimes to notepad. I've had a browser crash/stall on me too many times with long posts.

i prefer Smart Keywords search, it is just so much easier to use.
Nice to see they improved it! Like you (and being a true keyboard user), I never liked to add searches (I even removed the search field from Firefox). Before the smart keywords you needed to manually customize a keyword for a quick search to do the trick.

General Software Discussion / Re: Need advice on AHK key remap

Hi.  One of my board members works in a platform that, for some reason, enters twice when they hit the Enter key once.
Not that it would help me fixing it, but which OS is that? Something old and buggy like Windows 95 or 98?

Maybe some other DC member can help with your question.

General Software Discussion / Re: Boot optimisation software
« Last post by brotherS on April 16, 2006, 05:24 AM »
I currently use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel http://www.mlin.net/ but will probably add Startup Delayer (RJL Software) for ultimate  control of startup sequence. Mike lin also has the Startup Monitor mentioned above which is more a security thing. My system is still win98 so I have no idea if this will work on xp or anything else. I'd love to know though, so if anyone else uses the Startup Control Panel under xp let me know!
StartupCPL aka Startup Control Panel works for Windows 2000 and XP too, I'm always recommending that for ease of use.

If your PC is too old to handle XP, install Windows 2000  - it's FAR better than Windows 98  !

My Best Tip: Dont load anything unless you can really justify it! Convenient buttons can easily  create an inconvenient operating system.

General Software Discussion / Re: Winamp plugins and additional useful stuff
« Last post by brotherS on April 16, 2006, 05:21 AM »
I updated my first post above to now include MuchFX!

Amorak doesn't change your files, instead it creates a bookmark that is initiated when the matching file name appears in winamp again.

in the screengrab the bottom right panel is 'Amorak'. you can see i've named two 'bookmarks' for the 'Mojove Plan' track.
I'm trying Amorak too now. It's a shame it looks as outdated as MuchFX. Besides the looks, Amorak really needs an update: I can't use the very useful autosave option since that throws up error messages when listening to streams... also Amorak doesn't support Winamp 5's very useful global hotkeys.

I just wonder why the Calender displays a link to Gmail but not vice versa... maybe they don't want to attract each and everyone yet?

Yeah, nice list! Maybe not for the most experienced users, but a good starting point.

Exactly. I'm using a modern skin, so MuchFX stands out like Amish people in Bangkok...  8)

Do a search on Google  for MuchFX. It's a great Plugin for Winamp which even allows for stacking of DSP plugins. I've been using it for a long time without problems...
Cool, thanks! http://sourceforge.n...s.php?group_id=90732 is the URL - I just wish it would look as good as it works... One can't hide it completely while it's running, right? Just minimizing?

General Software Discussion / Databionic MusicMiner - a browser for music
« Last post by brotherS on April 15, 2006, 03:16 PM »
The Databionic MusicMiner is a browser for music based on data mining techniques. You can create MusicMaps to visualize the similarity of songs and artists. Explore your music and create playlists based on the paradigm of geographical maps!

http://musicminer.sourceforge.net/

Might be great for those with a big mp3 collection!
