Hey, I'm a proud 'murrican and I get my jockey shorts in a bunch about grammar as well, even when my own mastery of the lingo is less than stellar.  Hell, that's a whole 'nuther thread there, ain't it?  :P

Switched to decaf ~6 years ago, after a habit that started when I was 16 or so.  I worked night shift most of my working life and so 1+ pots of coffee per night was just "maintenance".   Then started working a day job and had a 1-2 espresso per day habit (brewed at home) and I ran out of coffee and money on the same day.  The headache I got was absolutely horrible.  Happened again about 2 months later and I began that day to wean myself off.  I still drink it because coffee is just damn delicious, even though the decaf is not quite as flavorful.  Still brew it in an espresso machine or moka pot.

The song is by the a capella metal band Van Canto; their cover version of "Wishmaster" by Nightwish.

What did I learn to play guitar for when I just needed "riddlydiddly"?

Tsaint, you haven't opened a can of peaches nor pears, but worms  :P

http://grammar.quick...uldnt-care-less.aspx

I am with Deozaan in that I could care less, and perhaps should, because I DO care about this particular issue, perhaps more than is necessary.  But (see wut i did thar?) you are correct; couldn't care less is the proper form, although this comment from that page made me chuckle:
So essentially the British started with "I couldn't care less" and the Americans responded, "I could". That sounds about par for the course.
;D ;D

Just peachy!

@Mouser: In the dark recesses of my memory, I believe now it was an article from an issue of Paranoia Magazine (I was quite the conspiracy buff in my youth).  Perhaps issue #7 (I remember reading the Chappaquiddick article), the "Funny Money" article (maybe, can't read the rest on the cover scan).

If anybody cares to read a real Libertarian wet dream novel about an economic revolution succeeding
...
@40Hz: I'm gonna have to look that one up!  Austrian economists FTW!!  :tellme:

Want a taste of mid-90's Paranoia?  They posted issue #1 for free as a celebration of their website relaunch:

Enjoy!

I seem to recall it was a chapter in one of the many books offered by Loompanics or Paladin Press, but I can't find the title I'm looking for.  It may have been touched on in "How To Start Your Own Country" by Erwin Strauss, but I'm not quite sure.

(the rest of the work is not my cup of tea, but that chapter is informative).

Ask anybody who's tried minting their own stable-resource-backed money, like the banks used to do in the good/bad old days.  I can't remember the name of the book, but I used to have one that detailed the trials and tribulations of people with the best of intentions and great ideas on how to rebuild our economy with a monetary system that gave actual value to it's currency, but ended up eventually running afoul of their greatest competition, the Federal Reserve.  :-\

When I first heard of BitCoins, I said to myself that this was eventually going to happen.
It always does... :(

From what I gather, it's not filing, it's using friction to cause heat which weakens the metal enough for the initial puncture (his comment "We're going to try and soften the can"), so there would be minimal if any metal shavings, and the rest is simple levered shear action.

Living Room / Re: "Admin" is a BAD user name for anything! Change t!

IIRC, my router actually offered to change the default admin password when I first logged in.  I hear a lot about Buffalo routers being junk, but this one came pre-installed with DD-WRT and has worked like a champ since I first got it.
May change the password but a lot of routers don't change the default user name - hell some routers don't even have a user name - just a password.
-Carol Haynes (April 16, 2013, 03:02 AM)

Aargh!! Dammit, I meant to say change the USERNAME, which it did allow and as I recall, it was actually part of the initial setup process to change the default username along with the password. :-[

I've encountered software issues where a user was locked out because of a forgotten password.  In every case but one (1), the vendor was able to provide a way back in.  That single case was such that no one - at that time  - could crack the database involved, not even the vendor.  And it was clearly stated in the documentation that if you lost your login, your data couldn't be recovered.

My chosen email provider - Lavabit.com - has just such a policy:

http://lavabit.com/secure.html
In an era where Microsoft and Yahoo’s e-mail services sell access past their spam filters, Google profiles user’s inboxes for targeted advertising, and AT&T allows the government to tap phone calls without a court warrant; we decided to take a stand.

Lavabit has developed a system so secure that it prevents everyone, including us, from reading the e-mail of the people that use it. We felt that this technical protection was necessary in addition to our Terms of Use and privacy policies.

For simple image hosting to post into blogs, forums, etc. I'm liking Postimage.org
Postimage.org was founded in 2004 to provide forums with an easy way to upload images for free. Postimage is a very simple, fast, reliable free image host. It's perfect for linking to auctions, message boards, blogs, and other websites. Postimage guarantees maximum uptime and performance so your image will be here whenever you need it. There is no registration or login, all you have to do is submit your picture. With continuous upgrades and dedicated staff Postimage is the #1 solution for Free Image Hosting.

Simple, clean interface with lots of link options, and all it's meant for is a place to store stuff you want to link to.  The free version has ads, a 5MB per image limit and '6 months no views' deletion policy.  A pro account costs anywhere from $2.95 monthly to 23.40 per year (1.95/month) with monthly, 3 month, 6 month, and yearly contracts, has no ads, 10MB per image limit and no deletion.

Imgur is nice, but it's kinda like Wikipedia or TVTropes; I spent WAAAY too much time there browsing the front page pictures, so now I have it blocked.  :-[

I tried Claws for a while.  There was something about it I didn't like, can't remember exactly what ATM, mebbe I'll try again.
940
I've installed OwnCloud on it (part of the afore-mentioned net stuff to play with) and it works, kinda.  Using it as a way to play selections from my music archive stored there is not that convenient; I'd like something like a Grooveshark interface rather than a "pick the file and click play" sort of thing you get with OwnCloud.

*Back On Topic*
I left Canonical back around 9.10 or 10.04 and never looked back.  I saw the direction they were going even then and it didn't look pretty.  Debian treats me right, I think I'll keep her...  :-*
941
Servers are an easier matter IMHO. Two words: CentOS or BSD. End of script.

Aw, come on, no love for a headless 'Debian Stable' box?  ;)

Admittedly, mine gets minimal usage beyond as a NAS and testbed for some net stuff I get interested in from time to time, but stable and solid, it is.

Living Room / Re: Pirate Vinyl Records! :D
« Last post by Edvard on March 30, 2013, 02:40 PM »
1 - This if freaking awesome.  Makes me want to start buying stuff on vinyl again, copy it and stow away the original until the copy wears out.  If only this could be used to cure skips...
2 - The only beefs I really have with digital vs. vinyl is the artifacting produced by compression (almost non-existent on properly recorded CDs, and only distractingly noticeable to MY ears on mp3s of 128Kbps or less) and the god-awful sonic vomitry of the Loudness Warw.  And as f0dder said, both cases can be corrected by the judicious hand of an experienced producer/engineer.  On the other hand, a worn needle or over-played vinyl is as bad or worse than any claimed digital harshness.

That said, I remember I once had a cassette of a band called Arsenal, their album "Factory Smog Is a Sign of Progress".  I thought it was pretty good, but I happened to hear a recording of the same album a friend of mine recorded from vinyl.  The difference was like comparing bologna to steak, and sold me on vinyl for a number of years.
Great years those were...

Living Room / Re: Grab 50GB of Box Online Storage Free for Life (2013-02-12)
« Last post by Edvard on March 30, 2013, 02:16 PM »
I'm using my 50GB box account, but sparingly.  Currently, I have uploaded everything that was on my Dropbox, just to see how the upload process went.  None of the files were over a few megabytes, so file size wasn't an issue.  Next I'll try uploading my music folder (I don't have a whole lot of music in mp3 format, so it'll fit...) to see how that goes.

@4wd: Thanks for that, interesting methods.  Not exactly what I was looking for, because I wanted to stay away from using other languages (no real reason, just personal preference).  I'll post later with my current attempts using pure Bash, a combination of unison and rsync to keep files up-to-date, and Yad for the graphic interface.

Mmmmm.... Sci-fi...

I remember some of my favorite sci-fi stories were to be found in old copies of Amazing, Galaxy, and Analog.  The pulp era was a fertile field for the innovative, the plagiaristic, and the canonical alike.  I found that old spirit briefly revived in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future series, where young unpublished writers could send in stories for a chance at publication and future fame and notoriety.  Lots of great ideas in those first few, every one could have been a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode and it would have gelled beautifully.

Geeze, I can't function if I don't have 3 cups in the morning, 3 cups at noon and 6 cups after supper.

I used to work night shift, so coffee was mandatory, and lots of it. lotsocoffee.gif
The company saved quite a bit of money once they started buying crappy coffee so I started making it at home and bringing a thermos.
... and chocolate covered coffee beans for an extra eye-ball-numbing kick.

My after supper coffee is fresh ground Mocha Java that I grind myself right before making a pot.  Mmmmmm Mmmmm.  I'm sucking on a cup right now!!!

That does sound good! I grind my own as well, Kona if I can find it in decaf, made in a Moka potw for maximum flavor without the hassle of an espresso machine (though I have and use one of those too).
Cheers! d_coffee.gif
