General Software Discussion / Re: Continuing with XP
« Last post by app103 on February 06, 2014, 07:10 AM »
A transitional compromise between your idea and mouser's would be to run the VM on Win 7. You could stick the desktop shortcut right there in plain sight, after booting up she could just click it to enjoy her XP...or linger there without clicking it, and get to know Win 7.

As mouser said, there would be performance issues, which would serve as an incentive not to run the XP VM and just use the Win 7, instead.

Once she is comfortable and is willing to give up the crutch of the XP VM, then you just get rid of it.

Is it appropriate to say how scared I am now?  :'( :P ;D
You're not alone.  App's toolbars have frightened me for a while now.

Admit it. You are just jealous of how incredibly organized I am.  :P

This is a related issue that I have...

I have been using LBC in a single column:

Screenshot - 1_30_2014 , 5_37_48 AM.png

It's not that I really want to use it in a single column, it's that I have no control over being able to force a new row.

If I expand it to a width I'd like, the things I want on an individual row by themselves, aren't.

Screenshot - 1_30_2014 , 5_41_25 AM.png

It gets even worse if I do not use captions.

Ultimately, that is how I would want to use it...sections without captions...Like I do on my taskbar.

Screenshot - 1_30_2014 , 5_46_10 AM.png

This is important to me for the sake of productivity. I want to be able to instinctively know where everything is, and I can not do that if I add more/less icons to a category and it causes it to change it's location on the bar, either pushing things up or down a row.

For example, if I add any more items to my upload folders category, it will push that category to a new row. Or if I add more items to the download folders category, it will change the contents of every row after that, completely rearranging where each category is on the bar.

It would also be nice if I could also define how many rows a category can occupy, forcing the overflow to appear on a menu, when clicking a divider button, like the taskbar does when you push the toolbars to occupy a single row.

So bitcoin, litecoin, and dogecoin walk into a busy bar.

Bitcoin says, "Drinks on me!" and gets in line at the bar.

Litecoin says, "I'll get the next round" and sits down.

Doge says nothing and comes back with the first round of drinks right away.

Bitcoin and Litecoin ask, "How did you get the drinks so fast?"

Dogecoin says, "Because I tip better than you two."

Dogecoin attempts to buy the first round, when the bartender says "No need. Cody Coin has already paid for the first round and has been sitting at the end of the bar waiting, for the last 7 years!"

Holy crap that is cool!

The first batch of primo is now sold out!

They had me sold on that!

Oh well... My daughter doesn't need it now, but... no harm in buying ahead...

They will be making the DIY project files available this summer, so you can make your own.  ;)

The Primo Source files will be released exclusively to our Primo backers in March 2014, and will be available on a free donations basis to all from August 2014.

Hoping to teach children the basics of coding from as young as three years of age, Primo is on the surface a wooden toy for children, but is in fact a robotics kit that uses a visual block-based language to enable kids to learn how to program.

The play set features a small, motorized cube called Cubetto, which is wirelessly connected to a wooden board with several slots in it. The board acts as the programming interface and children control Cubetto by placing the code - color-coded instruction blocks - into the slots. Once the blocks have been placed, pressing a red button on the side of the board executes the code and sends Cubetto to the programmed destination. The four blocks of the code include forward, turn left, turn right and a function block. The programming board includes a separate section where users can create a ‘saved’ sequence of code they can call at any time - when the function block is placed into the main code, it replays the piece of code stored in the function box. This replicates the way languages such as PHP and JavaScript use functions. This feature can even be hacked to create infinite loops.

Yes, you are correct about that data, and I haven't added it (yet) for two reasons: 1) I haven't decided WHERE to put that data.  2) If I add the network time, it stands to reason that folks will want that time converted to their timezone.  To see why I'm hesitant about that, watch this video: https://www.youtube....re=player_detailpage

General Software Discussion / Re: Cloned software and licensing issues

You don't have to remove the review if you don't want to. Your review does not infringe on anyone's rights, even if the Lollipic software is in violation of the GPL. You are not distributing the software.

If they have a problem with the software, they need to go after the "developer" of it, not the reviewers.

Personally, I'd leave the review up, and perhaps add a little note to it, if the SourceX developers decided to go after Lollipic directly, and won. Because what you wrote could have some significance in the long run, when you start to consider it's possible historical value in terms of documenting its existence and providing information to someone that may end up looking for it at some point in the future. Sometimes what was can be equally important as what is.

I wish I had a dime for every time I have gone looking for information on old apps that don't exist any more and not been able to find anything.

Oh, you are using XP? You are in luck!

This will make it a nice compact, single column, scrolling menu that won't take over your entire screen:

  • Right click your taskbar and select Properties.
  • Click the Start Menu tab.
  • Select the 2nd option, Classic Start Menu
  • Click Customize.
  • Under Advanced Start Menu options, check Scroll programs and Show Small Icons in Start Menu.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again.

And now you know why I have a "scary" taskbar.  :D

Screenshot - 1_4_2014 , 2_54_58 AM.png

With over 200 entries listed under Programs, it's just not practical to have to go on there in a regular basis to find anything. Plus, nothing in the Start menu is listed by category to give me any sort of hint as to their purpose, in case I forget.

If having a scary taskbar like mine doesn't float your boat, maybe mouser's LaunchBar Commander might be more your speed.

You could create a more compact version of what I do, organizing it by purpose, and only having a few top level icons that you can click to reveal lists that are a whole lot more manageable and easier to find what you want.

Plus the built in "Start Menu" program list is in a single scrollable column:

Screenshot - 1_4_2014 , 3_16_01 AM.png

Of course entries would have to be added manually to custom lists in LBC, as there is no way to add them automatically and have them sorted to where you would want them. But for stuff you plan on using even on a semi-regular basis, it might be well worth the time and bother to set it all up.

Strangely none of those listed in the linked thread made a difference. Same error.

However it works fine on 7, if you want to pursue the XP issue further, I will try other things. However, if there are no other similar reports then it's no problem, who knows what's up with my XP (if all goes as planned I will say goodbye to it in April anyway)

Working well on my XP machines...both of them.

XP and yes writable folder (often use desktop without issue)

Not all apps run well from the desktop. Try moving it to somewhere else. I have learned from experience that the desktop is best for storing shortcuts to apps and not the apps themselves.  ;)

OMG, you have killed my productivity for the day!  >:(

There are some gems in here that you would never have had the chance to play back in the day. For example, Halo 2600, which didn't exist back then!  :o

Tip for anyone trying to play any of the Atari games that originally required a paddle controller. You are not going to be able to do it, since the emulator seems to only have functionality for joystick emulation.  :(

Some of these games I have played so much that I can still hear the sounds in my head while playing them in the emulator.  :D

A few personal favorites:

2600 version of Dark Chambers was a great puzzle game. While the 7800 version had better graphics, the fact you had a more bird's eye view of the layout made it easier to play. You were less likely to get lost in the maze, less likely to end up going in circles, and much easier to figure out where all the items are. That made it much less challenging than the original. I still regret trading my copy of the original for baby sitting services, before having had the chance to really play the 7800 version and find this all out.  :(

Tip: There was a bug, I believe on Level S, that was a game stopper. There was one of the dead ends that you entered but couldn't exit if you had full energy, due to an energy bottle being placed in the doorway, after you entered. Really sucked to make it all the way to that level, get stuck in that room with no monsters to take any of your energy, and not being able to get back out. It meant starting all over again.  :(

Galaga - The whole reason why I bought a 7800. It was just so I could play this game.  :-*

7800 version of Ms Pacman, complete with intermissions.

Tip: Make it past the arrival of Jr, and the layout of board stops changing and just keeps repeating the final layout. Play it enough and you'll figure out the pattern needed to easily clear every board. I stopped playing this when I succeeded in figuring out all the boards.

Midnight Magic - This was so much better than the original Video Pinball. This one actually looked and acted a lot more like a real pinball machine. It was one of my husband's favorites, but he took the game a bit too seriously (broke 2 controllers and a table in fits of rage over losing balls, and was the primary motivator against ever letting him play any sort of pinball game on any of my PCs, out of fear of what kind of abuse my PC and desk might be subjected to). In the emulator, it's actually easier to play with the arrow keys than it was with a joystick. To play it with a joystick and have the same sort of control of the flippers that one would have on a real pinball machine, one had to hold the controller with both thumbs crossed and hooked around the stick, so that when you moved the left thumb against the stick, it controlled the left flipper, and the right thumb for the right flipper. Merely holding the joystick the way one normally would, using one hand to control the direction, really didn't work out very well.

Crystal Castles was always a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't attempt to play it on a PC. It's one of those games best played with an expensive deluxe 8 direction joystick, which 4 arrow keys on a keyboard really can not emulate.  :( The review says the controls were sluggish, even when using a trackball. I never tried it with my trackball, but found that with the 8 direction joystick, it wasn't sluggish at all.  ;)
