Living Room / Re: Download site in a box
« Last post by Veign on September 18, 2005, 07:24 PM »
I would pull and build descriptions from the PAD files.  I wanted to have descriptions very similiar to the descriptions at FileUpdates (simplicity) but drawn from PAD files (or database entries built from PAD files).

I figured PAD files is gaining support and since Tucows and Download.com now support PAD files it shows this is the way to distribute application information.  It will also cut down on the work for me - don't have alot of free time these days.

I had contacted Share32.com to see if they wanted to partner up and launch Share64 as an extension of their website but they didn't really have much interest.

Just curious if anyone has access to or knows where I can get a PAD enabled shareware type site script (in PHP or ASP).  I recently purchased two domains: Share64.com and DownloadDB.com with the intent to put up some specialized shareware type sites.  Share64 was going to be geared towards 64bit aware shareware and DownloadDB I had some ideas but unsure of the direction.

I am finding out I just don't have the time to create the site.  I thought I could find a pre-made site template that is PAD enabled and then just customize the look and feel.

I looked around but can't locate anything and thought I would check if anyone knows of a source.

Basically I am looking to create sites like http://www.softpedia.com in functionality..

Thanx in advance...

Agreed....

I know I don't have the imagination to come up with a new game idea but would love to see what others can come up with...

Remember when Snood was huge?  I played that game for hours on end - my productivity went way down during that time.  Very simple game but for me very addictive...

That's funny - Didn't know you guys did a review of Virtual Machines.

Taking a look now....

Games are usually tough to code because the algoritms and logic is typically complex.  Not sure that this is a coding snack type of application.

Even what seems to be very a simple game takes some pretty advanced algorithms and logic.  Coding and debugging the logic could take weeks (spare time) and not something that could be done in a weekend....

Well see what the suggestions are like....

The reason I like VPC better than another PC is that the entire virtual PC is contained in a single file.  I have the file backed up on my external 250Gig hard drive and when I need a restore I just have to delete and move a copy over (new system in seconds).  The other reason is that it lets me stay in one environment, this means I only need to worry about upgrading a single computer as each VPC uses the hardware of the host system.

VPC is well worth the price considering the hours it takes to restore a system..

In theory is you are writing a review you could take a clean install of Win2K or WinXP and load it up with all your applications to test.  Do your tests and then delete the file when done (all gone)..

Attached is a screenshot of my system running 3 OS's

I run all applications through Virtual PC from Microsoft.  No worries about viruses and if my system gets screwed up I just delete the Virtual PC file and restore my clean install VPC file.

Testing software on various OS's has never been easier - I run WinXP Pro on my development system and can load Win98, Win2K and Vista Beta all running at the same time.  What I have is VPC files for OS's at different points: clean installs, SP's applied, and some that are just run and never cleaned...

This has been a life saver for me and save me countless hours of testing and restoring OS's for testing software (all OS's have their own, single file that can be restored in seconds).

Download the 45-day trial and see what you think (especially if you are a developer)

Good point, and I did that, as have others, by posting a topic like this one long before the review was posted to get a conversation started and some feedback from others.

Exactly...

One suggestions for Mouser is to create a shell outline for future reviews.  Maybe a document that outlines a Comprehensive review and a two-part review.

This would give potential reviewers a hand in outlining the review and know the scope of work, and you a uniform review process for this website.

When a review is being posted as being developed maybe a poll should go up that lets users vote on applications to review and submit new applications to the list.  This way the reviewer gets some help in locating the most popular applications to review - this can be difficult to know what is the top applications of any category and you wouldn't want a review to miss the best.  I'm sure alot of people on this site would assist in locating the top-ten list of any application.

I guess the easier you make it for a reviewer the more reviews you can get.  Also, once outlines are done you never have to worry about them and they become a living document that will get better with age (you could have a members only section forum where members can review the review and suggest how to make it better and these changes could affect the outline documents)

I wasn't sure how to do it either but that did it.  May want to change the icon to a simley face per mousers instructions.

Also, I will have a new release coming out in a day or so to fix some minor issues...

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA - Memory utilization

- The GUI is a little obtuse.  I didnt realize at first that you had to have UsageMon "running."  maybe putting a toolbar button or something so this is more apparent would help.  What are the other "set" commands (GDI, etc)?  Do they monitor other resources for each process?

I already know this.  First release (should have been beta) and I didn't include a help file or do much on ToolTips. This will get better for future releases.  The interface was based on the WinXP Task Manager and will get better with each release.

Good idea with the toolbar.

You can set alarms forany or all of the objects: Memory Usage, GDI Objects and User Objects.

GDI Objects are what gets used when applications use graphics type command.  I had a memory leak in my Jeweled Button ActiveX and this tool would have help me monitor the GDI Objects.

- Could you make two alarms available?  One (a warning) at some limit, and then another one if the memory continues to climb past a second limit (less of a warning, more of an alarm... maybe center of the screen)?  See below for the reason why.

This is something I was unsure about.  How to set the alarms.  Should there be a single limit or upper / lower limit.  I can easily make the alarm trigger at the limit with a warning and another alarm when it goes X% above with a critical warning.

I would really like to flesh this one out as its something I was unsure on how to handle.  Lets discuss this topic further.  Two limits set by the user? or based on a percentage of increase? Should they be different names like: Warning Limit / Critical Limit?

Also, the alarm was done quickly and will be re-evaluated in future releases.

- Could you make UsageMon remember it's settings?  This way you could set it to monitor an exe and when you exited and restarted, UsageMon would be already configured to watch for the desired program.

This is not something that really could be done.  The key to a process is its ID.  You can see from Usage Monitor that process can share names but not ID's.  Process ID's are not based on the application and therefore are issued new ID's each time the application starts.  There would be no way to start monitoring a process on Start and be sure that it is the exact same process as before.

Let me think on this one as I understand your need.

- What is the refresh rate for updating the watched process?  It seems to be a little slow for when the process first goes above the threshold, after that, it's fine.  Could this maybe be an option? (Like from 1 to 30 seconds or something)

Refresh rate is set at 15 seconds.  Options screen maybe be added in future releases.   I just need to think of how many options I could have - ideas of what else you would want as an option?

- Can the text of the alarm be customizable?  This is a very unimportant request... one of the guys at work just thought it would be funny to have a message like "You idiot, what are you doing?"

This is something I would probably not do right now as most users would not need and the amount of work would be too much.  Maybe in a future, later release...

Thanx for the feedback.  Please keep it coming.  I will have a new release coming out in a couple of days to resolve some minor issues (like you can type letters in the limit input box - had the code to prevent but forgot to wire in).

Ok.  I released the first version of a new application called Usage Monitor that should cover this request.

Link:

There are a few new things I want to do with the application but wanted to get it out to get some feedback.  Enjoy and let me know if this is what you had been looking for...

(not sure if I have responded properly to a fullfilled request - not sure if I should ahve started a new thread with the proper DONE title.  Oh well, Im sure mouser will set me straight)

Not sure if this would help but try dragging the toolbar to a different location on the screen.  This may cause Windows to reset settings and resolve your issue.  Test at the new location and see if resolved, if so move back to where you have it.

Note-Its alarms / reminders are located under Special Notes.

Additional Special Notes:
- Clipboard viewer - Actively hooks into the clipboard stream to automatically watch for and display changes to the clipboard
- Clipboard log - Keeps a log of all clipboard activity
- Computer memory - displays and updates the current memory usage by the system
- RSS Feed - grabs and displays an RSS feed's topic list (updates automatically)
- Stock Quotes - displays a stock quote  (updates automatically)
- More being developed.

Additional features:
- Special menus appear if right-clicking on the main note, the caption at the bottom, selected text, and the note's icon
- Double-click the note's icon to place into icon mode to reduce the foot print
- Note docks to the side of the screen
- Control the transparency level of the note (WinXP / Win2K only) - Main Menu -> Options -> Transparency
- Paste as Plain Text lets you copy and paste formatted text as text only with no formatting
- Append notes lets you append several notes into a single Note-It file.  Use the Multi-Note mamanger to control these notes
- Note's bottom caption can be placed into different modes: Word Count, Character Count, Filename, or Time / Date Stamp

Download is 2.5Meg because it has some dependancies. (i.e it uses a safe-subclass component).

Application wide settings (since there is not alot of them) is stored in the registry.  Note specific settings are stored in the Note's file

Help file is something that I need to develop but hard to find time for a freeware application.

Any other questions ask away...

It was addressed to you

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to acheive.

If you want a streaming file to try (whatever you trying to on) you could you could use URL Snooper 2 in the downloads section to find the URL.

There is loads of stuff availble for streaming download at BBC Radio, try here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/

Here is one you could try: rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/scotland/radioscotland/demand/dailyfeature/rs_feature2_tue.rm

it is a 30 minute radio programme "Muriel Gray's Trip off the Tongue" from a recent Radio Scotland broadcast. (She can be a wicked wee lassie too)

I think you have mis-understood my posts.  My posts were in response to the OP who was looking for resuming a cached file.

I have no need for a download manager or streaming.

I only mentioned streaming as a way a file on the internet may not be the actual file you are receiving since the OP mentioned about download managers not being able to grab all files from the internet.

I then mentioned about finding me a file that could not be downloaded via a download manager because I would try some things to figure out why it would file with a download manager..

See?

The other way they could be hiding the file is streaming the file to the browser behind the scenes.

I had done this by analyzing a 404 error when the client conencted to the file (which did not exist).  I would then stream the right file to the clients machines based on some criteria.

It was still pretty easy for someone to determine the proper filename to connect directly too as I did not hide the file outside the root web folder.
