Living Room / Re: 10 Lifehacks from 100 Years Ago
« Last post by mouser on August 01, 2013, 12:03 AM »
In the 1910s, Gallaher Ltd of Belfast & London and Ogden's Branch of the Imperial Tobacco Co printed "How-To" series, with clever hints for both everyday and emergency situations. From steaming out a splinter to stopping a mad dog, these cigarette cards told you the smart way to handle many of life's problems.

Nowadays any single one of the "how to" cards listed on that page would result in a dozen lawsuits within a month after hitting the printers.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Google ad test
« Last post by mouser on July 31, 2013, 11:23 PM »
Ok, so you regular members probably didn't notice this, since they were only be shown to visitors who were not signed into the forum, but the web ads were running on the site for an additional 30 days beyond the original plan (from May through July of 2013).

They are now gone.

It's been an interesting experiment.  Some observations:

Google apparently has some arcane rules and about sharing any details publicly about ad revenue, etc.  Which to me tells you a lot about how shady the whole google ads thing is.  So I guess i can't reveal how much revenue the web ads were bringing in, beyond saying it was somewhere in the range of $100 to $200 per month.

Experimenting with Project Wonderful as an alternate way to choose ads was fun, but the revenue could not come close to google ads.

I know people are becoming accustomed to seeing ads on web pages, but personally I still find them distracting and distasteful.   But the worst part about showing them on the DonationCoder site was that they were frequently made to look like official/recommended downloads.  You can see some of the images above.  There was a time when google would have disallowed such things under the rubric of "don't be evil", but nowadays we all know that saying doesn't mean what it used to.

Having said that, showing ads on the forum wasn't the worst thing in the world -- and I think the solution of not showing them to logged in members basically solves the most seriously problem with ads on the website, which is the annoyance to the people who spend the most time here.  I don't think it's totally unreasonable to ask drive-by-visitors to view ads.  So that was an important realization.

Nevertheless, I think we are better off going back to not having ads on the website, despite the revenue they generated.  I feel better about asking for direct donations, and i think it's healthier for us to put our financial fate directly in the hands of the donors.

So we're back to normal.  Carry on.

[note from administrator of the forum:

Long time and beloved DC forum member Josh, who is a moderator, made a harsh post in this thread that he soon regretted, and he quickly deleted it along with a couple of brief replies to it from other members.

The deleted posts were uninteresting and unimportant, but moderators should not delete posts by people that are not spam.  If anyone feels like they've posted something they regret, the solution is to edit your post and explain it -- and contact us or the people who have replied to ask that they modify their replies as well.

Never just delete discussions after they have taken place.

Living Room / Re: did you ever throw your back out?
« Last post by mouser on July 26, 2013, 09:01 AM »
The term "throw your back out" refers to injuring your back in a way that you have trouble standing/bending/moving.

It's not a technical term -- people say "i threw my back out" to refer to a temporary condition of extreme back pain/immobility -- something that might happen suddenly if you lift something too heavy and find yourself unable to leave your bed for a few days.

So in the comic, it's saying that the dad "threw his back out" and was stuck in bed for a while.

Is it possible to relocate the database to another partition/drive?

yes, as long as you don't mind having all program settings in that other location.  Edit the configdir.ini file in the program's directory to tell it where to store settings.

To merge, select the clips in the main window, and then from Edit menu choose "Merge selected clips".

As for having to hold shift to access the "extra" menu related to a clip from the quick-popup menu, i can't remember why i couldn't get right click to work -- i should try again because i agree it's much more sensible to have it show on right click.

To replace tabs with space, use Modification dialog and in Find+Replace use \t for tab.  Note that you can save a modification entry and even assign a hotkey to it, to let you very quickly select some text in any program and apply the transformation.

If you are a competent coder with Python experience, who is interested in being part of a small team developing a serious, large, long term open source project, I'd like to have you be part of the team.

There is currently no funding for the work, and there may never be.  But it should be a great experience.  If you are a student looking for an independent project or someone looking for an internship for your resume, this could be a good fit.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor and DCUpdater Problem
« Last post by mouser on July 24, 2013, 07:05 PM »
I don’t start dcupdater from any DC program; according to Process Explorer it is started directly from Chameleon Startup Manager.

if you run it manually from start menu, then what do you see and how does it perform?

This is a real giveaway:
When it finally did appear on my screen with an update a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that there is a new setting for it right on the main screen: it says to only look for updates to Screenshot Captor with a checkbox next to it

Let me tell you what i think is happening -- at least partially:

The newer versions of screenshot captor (and all my new releases) now have an option to "check for updates at startup".

It sounds like your copy of Screenshot Captor is the one starting on startup -- thats why its got that "screenshot captor" only checkbox (perhaps in ADDITION to the standalone dcupdater check, which might be causing trouble..).

Go into your screenshot captor options and turn off the check for updates on startup option, since you will be using dc updater as a standalone update checker.

MEWLO Web Framework / Re: Yumps reboots as Mewlo - I'm Looking for Teammates
« Last post by mouser on July 24, 2013, 12:51 PM »
However, and I'm sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but what exactly is the advantage of building Mewlo from scratch instead of being an extension of django, drupal or something like that?

This is a question I've struggled with myself.
And I think writing it as a massive set of extensions of Django *would* make sense and would be a viable approach.

But I think there are advantages to starting with a clean slate. The primary one is having control over everything and being able to create a single coherent vision and API.

There is a special freedom and satisfaction that comes from building your own system from the ground up, and that's part of it.  It's true that there is more work involved in the beginning, but the advantages of being able to control all of the moving pieces and understanding all of the parts are substantial.

So really I think the answer to your question is that, while it will take longer to do this way, it will result in a more consistent, focused framework that is more enjoyable to code and maintain.

Thanks to everyone who responded before me

But in case it's not abundantly clear: Screenshot Captor does not install *ANYTHING* to your computer other than the program itself.  It contains NO spyware, adware, bundled toolbars, or anything else, and it will not cause ads to be displayed on your computer.

It sounds like you got some malware or adware from somewhere else -- you need to retrace your steps.

MEWLO Web Framework / Re: Yumps reboots as Mewlo - I'm Looking for Teammates
« Last post by mouser on July 23, 2013, 11:18 AM »
There are many good web frameworks out there which can be used to create custom web services/sites. Mewlo is not an entirely new kind of thing; Django is probably closest in scope (at least in Python).

A main thing that makes Mewlo different is that it is focused on user-account-centric sites and will support such things in its core: User accounts, rich user profiles, cross-site logins, user groups and projects, user messaging, forums, tagging, rating, etc.

It's not that you can't create such functionality by coding it yourself once you start with these other frameworks, or by cobbling together dozens of semi-supported addons -- but Mewlo is an attempt to create a cutting-edge and tightly-integrated framework for this stuff, and for the backend administration of it.

So for example, if you wanted to create a user-centric site like boardgamegeek, deviantart, facebook, etc.  You could build it on top of any of these existing frameworks like Django, Drupal, etc.  But you would have to write a huge amount of additional code to support the user and group account features, and you'd probably be installing dozens of addon extensions that you might have difficulty getting to cooperate -- and then struggling to keep all of these disparate components maintained.

The goal with Mewlo is to create a framework that provides more core infrastructure support for, and a more cohesive vision for creating these kinds of large complicated sites where users are the focus.

When a web framework like Django or Drupal provides support for something like user profiles, they do so as an effort to provide a fairly bare bones implementation, that makes few assumptions about the features and functionality that will be needed for such things.  This is a deliberate decision to be agnostic about how user profiles should be supported and what features will be needed, and makes sense given the fact that many developers will be using Django/Drupal to build sites that do not make use of rich user profiles.

The drawback is that whenever any developer does want to provide the kind of modern rich user profiles (and groups, and user messaging, forum, etc.), they must reinvent the wheel, or struggle to combine and maintain a large collection of third-party addons which rarely work well together for long.

With Mewlo, the goal is to provide support for best-in-class implementation of the kind of features you find in a modern user-centric web service -- with components that are stable, tightly integrated and maintained, to provide a predictable cohesive foundation for a developer.

Mewlo is firmly in the camp of "there is one right way of doing things" than some of these other frameworks, and will sacrifice some flexibility in favor of increased clarity-of-vision, uniformity, predictability, stability, etc.

A good tagline for Mewlo would be: "No more reinventing the wheel."

I've written quite a bit about Mewlo, it but it's on a private document that I need to make public.  I will try to do so soon.

As I said, it's a very big project, and I'd love to have some partners working on it with me (as well as line up some sponsors for it).
