The problem with the US in particular is that these actions create anger directed at 'big government' instead of at those who are governing. The latter is a bigger problem in my opinion but it is also fixable by people voting differently, way differently...

Good point.

A friend told me that the former director of Homeland Security is now heading up the company that sells the backsplater x-ray porno machines at airports. Or something like that. Sigh... (I've not verified that, but I have no reason to disbelieve him.)

Ok, maybe a slight over-reaction with the mosquitoes, but at a minimum it's the equivalent of sending in the army over a bar fight.

Out of hand is an understatement.

What happens when you let your own government terrorize you with threats thousands of kilometers away across the planet that in real terms have little or no effect on the average person? You get a scared mob screaming to be protected. What's the cure? Hand over all your remaining freedoms. What's the upshot? Terrorists are downloading movies and music and software and are a grave threat to national security. Oh, they're eating babies too while they watch their pirated movies, listen to their pirated music, and use their pirated software. Oh, and they're going to eat your older children too. Then they'll eat you!

Security? Huh?

Hey, I hear that there are some places with mosquito problems. Perhaps they should nuke them... Then drop a few megatons of nerve gas to kill off anything left alive... That'll teach them mosquitoes!

The real terrorists are in Washington D.C.

I like Benjamin Franklin:

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

This is what they're putting up:

IPRC_Seized_2010_11.jpg

51607.com has that. 2009jersey.com was up when I checked. amoyhy.com was also down.

This is the amoyhy.com page:

I'm itching to rant about this:

iPad's big upgrade: The top iOS 4.2 features

Notable features like, "Folders for organizing your apps" are just screaming for a rant. "You mean that things that have been around for, oh, a few decades are 'new features'?" :P That article is SCREAMING for it. :D

Read the docs. They have bootloaders there. There are also some you can download.

But yes -- you cannot replace a file in an ISO or image. They are read only. You must extract then recreate them.

I was going to recommend MagicISO.

I need to download ISOs from MSDN, and MagicISO seems to be the only program that can handle them. They have a free version that lets you extract, but not burn. Have a look. Not sure if it will help or not.

I actually don't recall why I went the ISAPI route originally

I do. Because the CGI extension just didn't work reliably! :D

Seems ok now though. Microsoft is recommending FastCGI and the php-cgi.exe binary. They've got a whole truckload of open source stuff available at the MS site. Have for a while now actually.

+1 for barney

Security. Reliability. Availability. Well put.

We're not there yet, and never will be. Well, at some point, but we're nowhere near right now. However, for casual software, I think we're there. For non-casual software...

Starting at the last there - Availability. This will always be a problem in remote areas. Satellite is the leveler here at the moment. Many parts of the world have serious issues here. Even electricity is a problem in many places. Even in some big cities. (My wife told me that they had another power outage in Ho Chi Minh the other day. Very common.) An onsite generator solves this. Again though, you're back out of the cloud.

Reliability. This is actually pretty good, but for many applications this will never be satisfied in the cloud. e.g. Mission critical applications, hospitals, etc. You can't have outages when lives are on the line. C4 systems are at the cutting edge here.

Security. It will never happen. Not because 2048 bits isn't enough, but because governments will not allow it. If they can grab your private parts, what makes anyone think they won't grab your data or spy on you? (And yes. THEY ARE out to get you~! :P )

It really all depends on the application itself. For casual software, I think the web is the way to go. There are no more barriers anymore.

To be blunt, those that don't have it available to them don't matter because they don't have any money, and that's all that people care about (collectively). (If we actually cared (collectively), we wouldn't allow the 16,000 kids that died of diarrhea today to die like that. That they died shows that we really don't care.)

For those that don't have reliable access, again, they just need to deal with it for casual usage.

For security, too many people don't care and are willing to sacrifice here. And for most casual software, security isn't really all that important. Really. Oh, so your game got hacked and you lost your 35th level whatever. Boo hoo. It's not really all that important. Banking on the other hand is totally different.

Blah... I have to go pack! I'm just procrastinating now.

tomos, you got me thinking about it there -- sponsored/non-sponsored/bias/non-bias research...

There's research that I read and believe, and other research that I don't believe.

Without much examination of why, it almost seems arbitrary/irrational. I suppose the primary source of my skepticism is where I see/perceive self-interest or a conflict of interest or something like that.

Lately, I'm getting sick of just about everything on the web.  :-\

Anybody else starting to feel like that?

Yep.

I think we spend too much time in front of a screen though, and that probably jades us a bit more than normal people.

Microsoft's business strategy of Embrace, Engulf, Extinguish lives on!

The only difference is that it now comes with a $2B price tag attached.

I hope not... :(

MS needs some better direction. They're relying too much on past achievements. This gives them an opportunity to extend, embrace, and edify instead. I hope they take the opportunity and use it well.

I think that the current generation will grow up to rue the day that Facebook and MySpace offered them the blue pill.

Great line, Darwin! One of the Facebook VP's was on TV today talking about how, "Don't like getting gate-raped by the TSA? Keep in contact with your family and friends through Facebook this holiday season!"

Still, I might be tempted to go in for a fondling. (Where the hell is Chris Hansen and his cameras?!)  ;D

Bwahahahahaha~! That's awesome~! I love it!

I'm somewhat saddened to see it. But I hope that things work out. It would be nice to see SuSe pushed more and made more popular.

As for MS buying up parts... Not sure what to think at the moment. I hope they do some good with it all.

Kinda worrying, but I'll reserve judgement until I read more details from a scientific source.

I know what you mean.

I'm sort of skeptical of a lot of research now. A lot of industries sponsor their own "research" to get the results they want. So, it's kind of tough to really know who's telling the truth.
