Newsletter for Aug 28, 2013
"Codename: Safety and Security"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings readers.  This is the first edition of our newsletter that is being sent out since we did a major pruning of the newsletter mailing list.  So if you're receiving this newsletter by email, we're glad to have you still with us!

In fact, if you are receiving this newsletter and haven't yet posted on our forum -- this is the perfect time for you to make a post and say hello!  We are a super friendly site and we always like hearing from new people, and you don't have to have any special skills or background to join our discussions.  Everyone is welcome.  If you look in section 2 of the newsletter, you're sure to find a forum thread that is perfect for your first post.

Anyway, We've got a slightly unusual newsletter for you this month.  While we normally focus on software, this month there seems to have been a flurry of security-related posts on the forum.  So we added a new section at the end of this month's newsletter collecting some of the more interesting security-related posts on forum.

We also have a ton of new beta updates to DC software to report.  If you use one of our programs there is a good chance we have a new beta version for you to try.  And if you have any feature requests for one of our programs, now is the time to post it.

I've also started posting about a big new programming project I've started on -- a new open source web framework called Mewlo.  You'll find a few posts about it listed in section 4 below.

And lastly, DC member Jibz has uploaded a new release his very popular bitmapped font "Dina", which now includes 6pt and 8pt versions (see Section 3 below).

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions.  In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

And some oldies but goodies:

3. DC Software Updates

Lots of updates to our hosted applications this month:

4. Member Reviews, Projects, and Announcements

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use.  If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

5. Website Discoveries, Debates, Essays, Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out...

6. Software Discussions

Just a small software section in this month's newsletter..

7. Entertainment and Humour

Here's a collection of some diversionary web browsing links posted on the forum recently.

8. Developer's Corner

This section highlights some discussions that might be relevant for not just for coders and developers, but also people interested in entrepreneurial issues.

9. Security Corner

There were so many security-related posts on the forum in the last month that we have a section of the newsletter devoted to the issue.

The portable zip is made so you can overwrite ALL files; the only caveat is that you should not ever edit the ConfigDir_Default.ini; if you want to customize the ConfigDir where stuff is stored, edit ConfigDir.ini.

If you want to move from portable to Installer, or vice versa, the only thing to do is remember to exit CHS first.  Then move your database directory (and ClipboardHelpAndSpell.ini file) from the old to the new.  In installer version the files are under the user documents\DonationCoder folder.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Difference between two files' time/date
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2013, 10:31 AM »
Since one might want to compare many files, it would be nice to not have to press a button and get a modal result.  I would think it would be preferable to have it autocalculate any time there are two files ready to be compared, and let user drag and drop to replace either.

Living Room / MakeUseOf.com - 100 Guides and Cheat Sheets
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2013, 06:54 AM »
Our friends over at MakeUseOf asked us to help spread the word about some very nice resources on their site, and I'm more than happy to do so.

The MakeUseOf.com site regularly posts unique, fun and cool DIY articles.  They were one of the first sites to do a real exploration of my Flipbook Printer software.

Anyway, they've put up a terrific collection of guides and cheat sheets on a huge variety of topics -- there's something for everyone there -- experts and beginners alike. Well worth a look.

Note that all of these are free to download but makeuseof requires you to sign up to get a download key (similar to the way we do things).  The MakeUseOf homepage is also a daily blog that is definitely worth putting on your daily visit or rss watch list.

I tried one of these mice once, and was driven crazy by the lack of good tactile feedback on the left and right mouse buttons.
yech, not for me.

If you feel compelled to post political stuff please do it in the basement section and leave the other sections non-political.

Cathie,

It can be hard for me to follow/reply when there are a lot of points in one post.

Let me try to reply to a couple and then encourage separate threads for separate issues -- it's easier for others to add on in those cases too, and say "i would also like this" when each request is on it's own thread.

So let's leave the rulers and values showing selection size issue for another thread -- i'm not opposed to considering such things.

For now i'm more interested in the "cut out area" request.

As has been pointed out above, unlike the case of cropping, we can't really "remove" an interior area -- we can only fill it with something.

Right now SC has a few ways to do this:
  • It can pixelate or blur, which leaves the contents partially visible.
  • It can fill in the area with black interlaced lines, meant to draw attention to the idea that the contents are being redacted.
  • It can "patch", which attempts to smartly fill in the contents based on the background of nearby pixels.
  • It can "splicte out" a horizontal of vertical area (with ragged edge effects if desired).

It is perhaps an oversite that there is no easy way to tell SC to fill the contents with an arbitrary solid color (or even mark it as transparent); the patch action is meant to do that but doesn't give you the choice of manually specifying the background color.

So my question for you is, when you want to "remove" some interior area, is what you want covered by something i've mentioned here -- or do you have in mind something different?

[edit: looks like tomos beat me to the reply and said in one sentence what it took me a page to say]
9011
Maybe i'll combine some of these effects into one dialog: patch, interlace, pixelate, etc. and add an option to simply fill the region with a specific color.

As tomos was saying i think, the SpecialFx2 menu item "Patch contents" was made to do this kind of thing.
Let me know if you guys think that i need to add something that lets user choose color instead of having the program guess it automatically.

Ok, let me try to shed some light and offer some commentary.

First, let's start with the easy part:

You have your windows system configured to run in a large-fonts mode, presumably because it's easier for you to read text when it is a larger font.

Depending on the design of application windows, dealing with this non-standard large-font mode can present some difficulty for programmers.

Various user interface libraries have different methods of artificially scaling up the controls and dialogs to try to accommodate this non-standard large-font setting, with mixed levels of success.

For myself, I have always run into some problems somewhere when trying to scale dialogs to match the large-font settings.  Some controls which don't scale well, or some positioning issues, etc.

In the end, I have decided that because the options dialogs are rarely used (at least relatively speaking), and because the large-font mode is also rare, the best solution for my programs is to basically work-around the large font setting and ignore it -- which in effect is a little more than ignoring -- i have to manually downsize the fonts so that they are not artificially scaled up by windows.

Anyway, the point is this -- I believe i've chosen the best of some bad options when dealing with the large font issue.  I am sorry that it makes it harder for those of you who prefer large fonts to see the options as clearly as you might otherwise.

It may be an issue worth revisiting at some point, but right now it's not at the top of my priority list.

first post updated with link to beta, both portable and installer.

+1 to the idea of making sure the bsods aren't happening when some device (external hd, etc.) is plugged in.

I always suspect memory chips.
I would swap out all but one, see if problem remains.  If so, replace it and try once more (use a dif slot too).
9019
I'm happy to report that SC has a DELUXE ability to do this -- it's just hidden away a bit in the menus.

What you are looking for is the SPLICE OUT feature at the bottom of the SpecialFX2 menu.
(perhaps i should put it in the edit menu?)

You can see a screencast video demonstrating it in action here:

Let me know what you think.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.211.01 BETA - Aug 26, 2013
« Last post by mouser on August 26, 2013, 09:26 AM »
Minor beta update:

Version 2.211.01 BETA - August 26, 2013
  • [BugFix] In previous versions an english language keyboard layout could be loaded at startup and not unloaded in some cases.
  • [Change] FARR used to have a setting for periodic update checking; periodic update checking is no longer supported.  Starting with this version there is a new setting on the initial General Options tab that says whether an update check should be performed at program startup.  If user wants to check for updates more frequently they can trigger an update check explicitly from the options dialog or tray menu.
  • [BugFix] FARR will not minimize on loss of focus when options form is visible.
  • [BugFix] Autocomplete of directories on network mapped drives was not adding trailing \ character (thanks josh).

I'm making the rounds doing updates on my apps -- FARR is getting just a minor update this round, but i expect to be doing some more substantial improvements in the coming months so stay tuned.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Database size
« Last post by mouser on August 26, 2013, 09:00 AM »
An important tip:

If you are saving to the same directory as the app runs from, as suggested by your paths,
then you do not have to put these hardcoded full paths everywhere.

In the backups tab of options, just put "Backups" as the directory -- no need to specify the full path!

And in ConfigDir.ini, just put
PORTABLE = TRUE
or
CONFIGDIR = .

There is no need to specify the paths explicitly unless they are pointing somewhere other than the location of the ClipboardHelpAndSpell.exe.

Even if your ConfigDir.ini file is specifying an explicit path, the backup options tab can just specify "Backups" as the backup directory and it will go into a subdirectory named Backups of where the configuration file is stored.  The only time to specify a full path there is if you are putting it in some backup location on a totally different path.

If you look at the quotesdaddy file you might get inspired to look around for other web pages that you could adapt it for.

Also you mention ConfigDir_Default.ini.
Can you check if you have a ConfigDir.ini also?

You should be editing ConfigDir.ini to customize it, and leave the Configdir_Default.ini alone.  It will work if you edit ConfigDir_Default.ini, but that file might get overwritten if you accidentally unzip a new portable version.
