DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: WinKey Enhancement Project (WEP)
« Last post by nosh on July 01, 2008, 09:16 AM »
I'm with JG & TucknDar - hardcoding the keys (in individual executables for one(!) or more keys) is a bit too limiting, a lot of us here already have our own remapping scripts running - so uploading the source would be nice but if you don't want to do that try to allow those who may be interested in your program to map keys to their preference.

Reeeeeeeally dubious sites... I'd be so embarrassed if this showed up in my browser history.

Explorer has always been quirky about saving settings, in my experience - but then I've always had TweakUI installed. Shouldn't be a problem if you use a good replacement.

Do you shut your system down the normal way without any intercepting utilities (i.e: start button -> turn off computer) and do you see the Windows screen that tells you it's saving your settings when you shutdown?

General Software Discussion / Re: Nero - WHY?
« Last post by nosh on June 23, 2008, 09:12 PM »
I have Nero 6 on my system, though I rarely use it. The other day I aborted a writing session with Power2Go a few seconds too late and though nothing seemed to be written to the disc, it refused to recognize it again. I started Nero and it did recognize the disk and also let me write a full session to it. Punchline: The disc was unreadable anyway.
So, while I'm tempted to say Nero's core writing routines are more mature.... what's the point?

I tried ImgBurn but it was way too geeky for me, too many ways to fxxx things up. Add to that firmware customization (removing DVD zone checks, uncapping write-speed(?), enabling some mode where the writing is slowed down in real-time if the media is not up to mark - does that depend solely on the firmware or does the writing software take care of it or do they have to work in conjunction?), some softwares randomly knocking me down to PIO mode... and the whole optical writing thing is a minefield as far as I'm concerned.
Bottomline: Almost any software will do, as long as it isn't BLOAT!

I couldn't bear the wait (not while the whole fxing world was talking about nothing else!) so I decided this would be a nice opportunity to start a fresh FF install. I've managed to find most of my extensions or even better replacements.

Got rid of the titlebar & menus using 'Autohide' (you have to run in fullscreen mode & ask it to always show whichever elements you need to see at all times, the rest can be easily toggled on when needed by getting out of FS mode)

MenuEditor is available (yaay!) - though I haven't had the time to put it to use yet.

Toolbars are not as quirky to customize as before but do take a bit of doing.

The Library is awesome, I botched up some stuff while putting it to the test and instinctively hit Ctrl+Z (I'd never have noticed it in the menu) & could undo every step (don't know if this was a feature in FF2 but it's awesome to not lose bookmarks just coz you're in sleep deprived zombie mode! )

The performance: well, Firefox doesn't feel like Firefox anymore. Can't wait to see how much better it'll get after I give it the full Tweakguides workout. 8)

Thank you, Mozilla!

I'm thinking the best strategy is to wait a couple of weeks for the situation with Extensions to settle down. What do you think?

More like a few months in my case... there's several important extensions that haven't caught up yet and forcing compatibility just screws things up.

Guys, a heads-up. I've read about an infected RC3 floating around on the Internets, parading as the real thing. Just be careful about leaked versions.

Just to put things in perspective reg. current browser market shares:

opera mkt.jpg

It's hard to believe, but Opera is fourth at a grand 0.71%.

[Source: Cybernet]

I think the post title: Firefox, Safari, & Opera Hit Record-High Market Share is kind of ironic.  ;)

[valueless rant]
Opera is a fantastic piece of s/w. Pound for pound it's superior (atleast to FF2), by _miles_! But one wonders how slow it'll have to get for it to give us the level of functionality that FF currently provides. Until it opens up its gates it'll just have to live with its current niche audience (~2% (?) market share). FF3 is definitely a step for the better but I don't see it living up to all the hype once all the extensions (read, "crazy code"  ;D) catches up. They're both staying on my system until one totally owns the other, which isn't happening anytime soon... not till I buy a quad-core monster anyway.  :-\

Developer's Corner / Re: Do you use a good office chair when programming?
« Last post by nosh on June 12, 2008, 10:17 PM »
I had one of these generic lean-back + swivel office chairs which needed replacement a couple of years back (the air elevation-lock or whatever gave out). I started using a straight back wooden chair in the meantime (no curves, just right angles) & realised I tended to slouch/fidgit/distort my posture way less and was totally OK sitting on a hard surface. Now I am distinctly uncomfortable if I have to sit in one of the soft-bottomed move-in-any-direction things. :)

I'm sure the description of the malware that hit the DC server said it did something very similar. Apparently there weren't any casualties but if these clowns could generate effective code maybe they would have got a _real_ job?

I just read something about it on Digg yesterday, new footage or something... didn't see it but my guess is, it's 5 minutes of some old dude screaming at the kids and waving his cane around, trying to keep them off his lawn.

I second Lashiec.

Old Driver Removal
Now we move on to the simplest, and yet most commonly mishandled part of using graphics drivers - the removal of previous Nvidia graphics drivers.

General Software Discussion / Re: Desktop state snapshot & recall software
« Last post by nosh on June 03, 2008, 08:08 AM »
Do you know any multi desktop software that can save open apps and their states?

Nope, we're not just talking about ordinary documents like word/excel files here - there could be a media manager or IDE running with ten integrated windows & as many controls, each of them in a different state. The only way out AFAICT is some low level virtualization app.

I read the book years back so the details are very foggy but I was left with the impression that he did actually kill his victims. I just regarded the movie as a (disappointing) adaptation of the book so didn't give it much thought when I watched it.

Other than a hardcore virtualization approach... only simplistic solutions spring to mind

Use a multi-desktop software.

or

Create multiple logins and switch users?

Edit: Just tried Groupbar, it remembers the apps and their positions (I had KMPlayer and Firefox running but it didn't show me those in the list of apps I could add to the snapshot). It doesn't remember the program state.

Living Room / Re: The 10 most annoying programs on the Internet
« Last post by nosh on June 02, 2008, 04:00 AM »
I love Y! Messenger but Yahoo is by nature, intrusive. For example, the latest messenger beta released a few days back installs their toolbar (and makes other changes like setting your home page, IIRC) if you choose the default option, it's only if you choose to customize the install that you see what it was trying to slide past you. I also hate the fact that they've teamed up with Opera and try to push their way into their browsers (including Opera Mini)  in a way that's not easy/possible to change.

I don't know why she's picking on flash though, from what little I've seen of it, it seems like a really promising technology. Blaming flash for all the badly designed sites using it isn't really justified.

There’s nothing wrong with Flash, provided you don’t use it to construct Web sites where people want to find information, navigate easily, or do anything beyond passively consume exactly what you choose to give them in exactly the way you’ve decided.
Not always true, I've seen some pretty decent sites that use flash for navigation.

Living Room / Re: Drinking Vinegar?
« Last post by nosh on June 01, 2008, 10:10 PM »
Excellent point, Deozaan. I only drink on occasions but yeah, it's something one never gives a second thought to. Maybe we're conditioned to think drinking booze is OK, or even 'cool'. Incidentally advertising liquor is illegal here, so some companies have started manufacturing water & apple juice and promoting their main product with wink-wink ads for apple juice.  ;D

We have quite a few variants of drinking yoghurt in India & people are really fond of it, I personally find it disgusting.
Drinking vinegar I've never heard of... can't be good for the body, can it?

Newsgroups don't have the excellent  signal-to-noise ratio that you find at a place like DC but they're focused on your topic of interest and usually have a few resident experts who are more than willing to help.
