DC veteran support fund

I missed this one.  So anyone who participated in the Mac/PC flame wars gets a stipend?

They get a warm Cody blanky and a wrist rest for their tired coding hands  ;D :D :P

I like this idea of a checklist very much. Maybe we could have less specific targets and more generic ones:
  • more gadgets
  • more bandwidth
  • merchandise
  • faster bugfixes
  • more servers
  • new-member welcome fund
  • DC veteran support fund
  • sushi for all
  • ...

People could then indicate where they would like their donation spent on. It gives them a little control, and we don't have to promise too much or reveal too many details. Of course we would need to be very transparent about this; they trust us with their money...

I would look for something that is compatible with/to blowfish, then you could have encrypted conversations on irc with users of FiSH or mircryption. Well this is just the same again: encryption :)

I think protecting your conversations is important. Even if you don't have something to hide, it doesn't mean you have everything to show.

You might need/want other plugins that "depend" on the kind of data you get: if there are lots of urls you might be interested in an url grabber thingie (maybe it's built-in) ... that sort of thing. Everytime you think "it would be cool if I could do this and that" look for a plugin that does this and that!

Isn't google talk the same as jabber? Maybe they stuff in more data in the xml-messages...

I would guess that Pidgin is heavier than GT, but it also has more features for example an OTR plugin. I haven't ever used the official GT client though, so I don't anything about it (I don't even know where to download it).

General Software Discussion / houseforge recommendation November 2007: Pidgin
« Last post by housetier on November 12, 2007, 02:45 PM »

About houseforge: In this series I recommend tools that meet certain criteria: they have to be free of charge, useful or fun, and they have to work at least on both linux and windows.

Suggestions are welcome  :)

The Past

The last houseforge recommendation brought you keepass. It's been over a year since that post, more than 12 months since I promised regular postings.

The present

Shamefully admit I didn't live up to that promise. However, this month I present

:Thmbsup:The houseforge recommendation for November 2007!

It's all about the internets these days, so this time I ask you to take a look at pidgin:

pidgin.png Short

Name:
Pidgin IM
Purpose:
Multi-platform, multi-protocol instant messenger
URL:
http://pidgin.im/

pidgin.png Longer

Pidgin IM runs on
Windows, Linux, BSD, and other Unixes.

It claims to support these IM protocols (copied from their homepage, (comments) added):

  • AIM
  • Bonjour
  • Gadu-Gadu
  • Google Talk
  • Groupwise
  • ICQ
  • IRC (ok, not really IM but oh well, it's used for chatting)
  • MSN
  • MySpaceIM
  • QQ
  • SILC
  • SIMPLE
  • Sametime
  • XMPP (a.k.a. jabber)
  • Yahoo!
  • Zephyr

This is a mighty long list!  :o

And now for a long list of screenshots (taken from: softpedia, snapfiles, softonic, and naturally, pidgin.im; and from friends), this list is in no particular order:

blist.pngPidgin3.gif
contact_window.pngPidgin_1.png
Pidgin.gifPidgin_2.png
Pidgin2.gifPidgin_3.png
Pidgin2b.giftabs2.png
finch.png

pidgin.png The End

Pidgin supports so many protocols, works on several platforms, has a cute mascot (similar to our cody), and their irc support channel was responsive. If you are looking an all-in-one solution to your platform-agnostic IM needs, I am positive Pidgin IM is for you!

Once I get GnuPG into pidgin I will use it for almost all (nothing can beat xchat for irc yet) my chatty purposes, and it is looking good because there already is an encryption plugin for pidgin.

General Software Discussion / Re: Gmail rolling out IMAP Support?

Yes I also have the feeling gmail was very slow and lacking something.

A good read indeed, very easy to understand. Not knowing better, I assume the author's claims are correct and will try to talk my hoster into changing the php configuration.

Ha! I have been playing solo for a very long time now. It's the best implementation of sudoku I could find for my linux desktop. There are other games, but I haven't tried them all. Untangle and Map are very cool and I play them when I've gotten tired of sudoku...

I have tried gmail's iMap-interface and have gone back to the web interface. My tags where represented as folders, but on the same level as Inbox, so TB wouldn't update them; as I have set up several filters which sort my mail by tagging them, I do not see them until I manually update the folder.

Let's say I have one filter for all mails regarding donationcoder: the filter applies the tag "DC" and archives them. Now in TB I don't see a new mail in Inbox (because it's already in DC), nor do I see a new mail in DC unless I select that folder which updates it. I think it would work better if those folders where subfolders of Inbox, but I don't know for sure.

Maybe I need to disable gmail's filter and set them up in TB... I shall try and report back! :)

Living Room / Re: Coders' Watches

My cell phone has a clock, so I don't wear one on my wrist. I haven't worn one for over ten years. These days, whereever I go I have a clock in sight (I live in Berlin, not in the country :D ).

Now if there was a watch with PDA and phone thingie and whatnot -just like in The Spirits Within- then I would surely be tempted :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use Desktop Widgets?
« Last post by housetier on November 05, 2007, 04:13 AM »
I don't use them, because normally I don't see them: the application covers the whole screen. The only "widget" I have is a changing wallpaper. I find such widgets, or desklets, too distracting and of questionable use for me.

However, I think userse should try as many tools and programs as they need until they have found the combination that suits them best.
915
sp dc would need dedicated servers for distributing emails as well. Can't we get a good deal at amazon's web service thingie? Or a few volunteers setup a "relay host" only for DC.

You can tell I have never had to send 45K mails in one go... :)
916
hah very good find! got me into reading about VCS again

thanks tinjaw

« Last post by housetier on October 18, 2007, 10:33 AM »
I read too many blogs and news sites already! I cant keep up anymore...

I like techcrunch.com when they bash services and websites.

wtflogo.gif heise.gif golemfavicon.png

In Germany you can't get around reading heise and golem; programmers should read worse than failure. I will not mention slashdot because they are too slow.

I wonder how those spammers send millions of emails a day...

Developer's Corner / Re: I sucks at html+css+javascript
« Last post by housetier on October 09, 2007, 02:42 AM »
Attached I have the files to show how far I have gotten:

  • index.php is the homepage; highslide's popup is opened/launched/started by clicking on "Tageskarte ziehen" on the left
  • tarot.htm is the content of the popup; this is what I am struggling with
  • Tarotkarte_Rueckseite.gif is the cards of the card deck which is supposed to laid out in an arc. I even wrote a javascript to automatically insert <img>-tags, which worked but not really: the tags where inserted with correct styles but nevertheless they werent laid out according to style.
  • 01_galli_tarot_2.jpg is a mock-up or prototype; gives an idea of the layout.

I know I am very demanding, but there is no reason for me to go beyond the basics of css+(d)html. I know the theory quite well and always have tips and hints for web designers, but I do not want to become a web designer myself.

Alas, experience beats theory, and lacking the former I am asking if someone could show me how to arrange this card deck. I am confident I can handle javascripting myself, I am not confident anymore about my css knowledge.

I should have asked much earlier when I first ran into problems and not when I finally ran out of ideas, and time. Thank you for responding, steeldept!

Developer's Corner / I sucks at html+css+javascript
« Last post by housetier on October 08, 2007, 06:54 PM »
This is what programmers do these days

I have to "design" a page with a little DHTML:

  • User inputs question
  • Question is displayed below instructions and card deck
  • User selects a card from card deck
  • selected card is raised
  • random card and its explanation are displayed below the re-displayed question

They use libraries

I have to use Highslide JS, which I think is quite solid. My page is loaded by highslide; it's a normal .html-page.

The Specs

I have all the images, and the texts, and a few "prototypes" printed on paper. What I don't have is a clue! I thought I know a little about CSS, but I can't for the time of my life figure out how to position those cards like in the prototype.

The card deck is right of the instructions. On the card deck there are 7 cards, 85x117 pixels; they overlap partially and are laid out in an arch (I think thats the word). For three days now I have been struggling to use the proper combination of "position", "top", "left", "margin-left" and "whatnot" to lay out the cards according to specs.

The Problem
I thought this would be easy, but I must be overlooking something.

So, how do I layout the cards with css and add an event handler to each one that raises it by, say, 20 pixels? I think I can hook into that raise-script to display the front of the card (135x183) and its explanation myself.

The Bounty

I don't have any credits left to offer, so I offer my help in setting up secure communications (email, irc, and jabber) as a return.

Living Room / Re: Forum Signature Spam: Let's discuss how to handle..
« Last post by housetier on September 27, 2007, 09:16 AM »
Also while spam certainly is annoying and spammers are not really "nice people" I think it is more important to welcome new (potentially nice) members instead of chasing a few (definitely bad) spammers. I mean, certain measures against spam are ok, but we shouldn't put too much effort (time, nerves, attention) to it - the rest of the community would feel the lack of attention.

How do we detect those "affiliate sites" the easy, simple, maybe effortless way?

I think I might like the idea of minimum number of posts. Very few "bad people" will still "break" this limit, but I think DC community is able to deal with that.

In the meantime I have disabled all the sigs, so no matter what the outcome I can easily accept it :D

Living Room / Re: Forum Signature Spam: Let's discuss how to handle..
« Last post by housetier on September 27, 2007, 12:14 AM »
I am in favor of allowing quotes and textual links but no images nor banners and such. Also, the signature shouldn't have more than 5 lines. The actual post is more important than a signature.

If people have so much to say in their signature, they should open a thread or put it on a website and link to it.

So far I haven't really been inconvenienced by other users' signatures because I told smf to not display them :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by housetier on September 27, 2007, 12:09 AM »
I really like winscp and abuse it as a file manager under windows. As an alternative I use total commander, and lacking that I make do with the bloody windows explorer...

at work I have quite a big numbercruncher sporting fedora 7. If it's a something@home project I can help out.

So... what do we need to get from where?
