Just FYI, at work they need this to handle laptops with a Matrox TripleHead2Go Analog setup. They can't trust students using the laptops to be able to properly configure them to use the Matrox and then back to standard use. They need a one-click solution.

Thanks Ralf, but I got the stuff I need to retrieve the info. I need the info to set it. But thanks to you guy mentioning UltraMon, I now have another place to look for help. UltraMon has a freely downloadable SDK with a help file and sample code. They require a licensing fee if you use their COM controls, but maybe I can find the few API calls I need in there somewhere.

If it is OK with you Mouser, maybe you can contact them and see if we can get a license that allows us to release Donationware (like Coding Snacks) at no cost.

Oh man this would be sooooooo cool!
If I get this working I will turn it into a Coding Snack for you jgpaiva.

Ralf,

Thanks. That would be a great help.

Or are you fluent enough in VB6 for me to just post the class?

I can read VB6 code. I learned to do that while working for Borland supporting Delphi. We would find examples in MSDN and port them over to Delphi.

Help me Obi-Wan KenCody!

Here is what I want to automate...
12-17-2007 12-16-27 PM.png

It just so happens that I was looking for a way to do this today via AutoIt (or something similar) and was in the middle of researching it, when one coworker walked up to another coworker at the desk next to mine and asked if he knew of a way to do the same thing I was researching. So, If you help me, you will be helping two more via proxy.

Here is the simple scenario:
I have a laptop. Sometimes I am only using my laptop's build in display. Other times I have an external monitor connected and I want to "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor." so I can use both displays. I am getting tired of having to do this manually. And then manually again to reverse things.

I have found some info on MSDN, but it is only for getting/setting display resolutions. I can't track down the API or WMI calls that are behind the Display Properties dialog. At this point I may have to employ a Windows API spy program unless I can find some documentation.

Have any of you gurus come across this info in your travels?

General Software Discussion / Tongue in Cheek Review of Windows XP

I have finally decided to take the plunge. Last night I upgraded my Vista desktop machine to Windows XP, and this afternoon I will be doing the same to my laptop.

Interesting. I took a look at your exported file and there is no information in it about your video card. It should be in the Components -> Display section. But yours is empty. That was one of the main things I thought it would provide to assist you in finding the correct drivers.

How does one go about updating their libraries?

OpenGL libraries are updated with you update your video drivers.

CodeTRUCKER,

You overlooked part of my reply.

Find msinfo32.exe on your computer and run it. Then export the info to a text file (File|Export...) and attach it to your reply.

This will provide you with a great deal of technical information about what you have and what drivers are loaded. This is worth having, even if everything is working, so you have a record of it in working order for when problem arise.

The issue is probably that the default behavior for Windows is to reboot on a BSOD. To change this behavior right-click on My Computer and choose properties. Go to the Startup and Recovery tab and uncheck Automatically Restart. This will allow you to be able to write down the details of the BSOD.

I took a look at the page mouser suggested. The problem is that many of those drivers are for Vista only. Please provide a list of the stuff that isn't working.

Find msinfo32.exe on your computer and run it. Then export the info to a text file (File|Export...) and attach it to your reply.

Deozaan,

I investigated and the problem is with the webserver/blog. The pages on that blog are returning a 302/redirect that is pointing back to itself, creating an infinite loop. Firefox is detecting this and throwing up the error message you are seeing. The webmaster/blogger will have to fix it on their side.

Do you really see that many BSOD that it is a concern? I haven't had but maybe two in the past three or four years. BSODs on WinXP should be a /very/ rare occurrence these days and should only result when you update or install a device driver.

Running it in Safe Mode might help pinpoint the problem.

You know Tinjaw! He's done e v e r y t h i n g;)

When I was in the army I was with the 1st MI Bn. We were a corps asset in Wiesbaden. The unit did radio signal interception and was stationed at the only US Army Air Base because we had airplanes that flew our antennas around. Our radio equipment was in  four semi-trailers and was powered by two semi-trailers loaded with generators. I was rated to drive the M915 bobtail by myself and w/trailer as a student driver. I didn't do it often. I usually drove a Deuce & 1/2 or a 5-ton (the old style).

Oh, and I didn't call break one nine because the military doesn't use CB. But I did call CQ.
