General Software Discussion / Re: InfoHesiveEP from 2BrightSparks now free
« Last post by Jibz on June 21, 2010, 01:28 PM »
Just looking at the download page - I notice the SDK is written for Borland Delphi. I wonder if the move to freeware signals that they are no longer going to be using Delphi and hence the program development has reached its end?
-Carol Haynes (June 21, 2010, 12:13 PM)

I got the feeling from their homepage, that they chose to make InfoHesiveEP free to get publicity and traffic for their backup products. I would guess they found they were making most of their money from that (and it probably requires less support as well compared to this).

General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend disk imaging software?

But, on another part of the site, an article on Reliable Drive Imaging Software comes down in favour of the TeraByte one.

That review strikes me as perhaps not the most in-depth ever. For starters, he admits he hasn't actually tried restoring an image using it. Also he is using the Linux version to backup instead of doing it inside Windows.

Apparently you need to run some add-on tool to be able to backup reliably while windows is running, something that is built into pretty much all other tools. Also, as far as I can tell from the feature list it does not support differential images, which would mean you are going to be doing full backups every time. Edit: I was wrong :-[

Now I am not in any way saying it's a bad tool, I have no experience with it -- I am just noting that the review you linked could perhaps have been more thorough and have highlighted some of the features present and absent compared to other tools .

That being said, I'll take a 100% reliable clunky solution without the bells and whistles over a fancy GUI that ends up failing miserably the one time you need it.

Something a little like ReminderFox or DS Clock would be awesome. A pop-up that shows upcoming events.

The most important thing is if the boot CD sees your disk controller. Before counting on it I would burn the boot CD and boot it.  Go through the motions as if you are going to do a restore from an image.  If you can't seem to find your HD then you probably need to look for another software.

That is very good advice. I had a similar situation at one point where my USB backup drive wasn't recognized properly by Acronis. Make sure the boot CD works with the hardware you are likely to use it on .

I've glanced at a few other DC threads and am currently inclined to Macrium, though they don't seem to have a free version any more.

I have no experience with Macrium, but I think the free version is still available:

How do we know is is not a report paid for? It wouldn't be the first time happening.

Original Advisory
Adobe:
http://www.adobe.com...ories/apsa10-01.html

While I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, why would Adobe pay to get a false vulnerability warning on their own product?

Personally I interpreted it more like they didn't want to disclose what the problem was to avoid helping more people exploit it, but I have no idea of course :).

I ran into an odd problem this morning that I thought I'd share here.

I wanted to download the AM-DeadLink tool because I had some links to check, but when I googled the name to find the site I ended up with a blank page.

Oh well, I'll just go to www.aignes.com and access it from there I thought, went there and selected AM-DeadLink in the top menu .. blank page. Hmmmmm.

I googled "am dead link" which worked (yay!), and chose the snapfiles.com link .. blank page. The softpedia.com link .. blank page. The cnet.com link .. blank page .

I figured maybe NoScript was being overly zealous, so I tried in internet explorer .. blank pages.

Then it dawned on me .. I tried disabling Kaspersky Internet Security, and lo and behold, all of a sudden it all worked.

So it would seem Kaspersky is silently blocking any URL containing the word "deadlink" from being loaded. A google came up with this forum post http://forum.kaspers...dex.php/t150990.html describing a similar problem.

I am certain there is some good reason for it, maybe some evil exploit is using an URL containing that word, but it's a bit like a false positive only worse, since there is no warning, and it is effectively keeping some people from getting to a software developers tool, AM-DeadLink.

I don't think I've seen a command line parser that uses anything but " (ascii 34 or the unicode equivalent) as double quote.

I have been a long-term user of an old version of WinRAR - which is very good.

WinRAR comes with lifetime upgrades as far as I know, so no reason to use an old version .

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by Jibz on May 17, 2010, 02:02 AM »
It's almost like a cross between Excel, Access, and a outline-style notetaker...and Word to boot.  At some point, videos would be needed to demonstrate all of this.  Because the power of IQ is not apparent without seeing it in use.  If you just open the program up, you won't really have an idea what it is capable of to do.

Sorry, couldn't help it . I am taking my baby steps with it at the moment, and while it certainly has great great potential, it is indeed sometimes hidden well.

It's one of those pieces of software where you can feel that genius is just under the surface, but you have to decide if you want to fight the surface to get to it. I am trying.

Developer's Corner / Re: A story about "real programmers"...
« Last post by Jibz on April 22, 2010, 09:49 AM »
Obviously a real programmer wouldn't edit anything. He'd have an electronic keyer like the Ham Radio Operators use.  A dit is a 0 bit and a dah is a 1 bit.  He'd sit there and key it in "stream of consciousness" style, directly into the instruction queue.

Personally, I prefer to just wave a magnet over the hard disk surface to set all the bits to the values required to store the program I am writing .

Methods to discourage favoritism might be necessary as well. It would be important to consider whether votes should be anonymous. Votes might also include comments (optionally). It could be like ratings/reviews on e.g. Newegg or Amazon for example (Newegg perhaps more applicable as the review there are generally short).

Blind tests where the browser shows a closeup from an image from say 4 random programs and the person rating has to pick the one she likes best without knowing which program they came from would be interesting, and could maybe cut back a little on say all the bibble zealots voting up bibble images :).

True: it wasn't meant to infer lesser class -- just different. Suggestions?
-Perry Mowbray (April 15, 2010, 11:07 PM)

Maybe "extended entry"? .. to me that doesn't convey any distinction in quality, merely that the entry contains something more. Of course I am not a native English speaker, so my vocabularity is not that high.

Target has some good points .. maybe we just need to make sure to inform any new visitors that (some of) the NANY apps are coded in a short time frame and do not always represent the production quality applications available on the rest of the site?

I think what I am objecting to here is that it feels a bit like you are insinuating that first class apps will be better or more useful, while it sounds like they will just be better documented and easier to install.

I would say that's probably more an issue of how it was stated than an actual reality. And perhaps it's all just about figuring out how to communicate this to people so that the spirit is maintained, while also allowing room for the growth and improvement that is desired.

Yes, I think you are right. Basically, if you take the presentation of the idea and cut out this paragraph

NANY entries that qualify as First Class entries will be featured more prominently in our wrap-ups and in our presentations to other sites as they'll have the widest appeal, ease of use and clarity of documentation.  In other words, the "First Class" applications will be the applications that we feel most comfortable recommending to people who have never heard about DonationCoder.com, and which we think are ready for wide promotion to the general public.

it would be easier to agree with I think.

I can see the dilemma you are facing here. The new people who come to the site through the NANY advertisements may be discouraged if they run into some of the more 'lightweight' entries, but on the other hand the current format seems to get a lot of people to at least participate.

I think skwire has some points .. dividing it into first class apps and "rubble" that people can just ignore is not making it everybody-is-equal. Of course everybody isn't, and some of the apps do deserve more attention, but I could fear this change might discourage people in the normal category from entering.

I think what I am objecting to here is that it feels a bit like you are insinuating that first class apps will be better or more useful, while it sounds like they will just be better documented and easier to install.
