Living Room / Re: Anyone actually use rewriteable media?
« Last post by brotherS on April 20, 2006, 09:12 PM »
I'm using DVD+RW - but only *very* rarely.

Yes, I second that.  I date all my backups, and furthermore, I catalog the contents using Whereisit.  I don't think I've heard Whereisit mentioned here, it's a great program.
Mentioned several times: https://www.donation...ch2;search=whereisit :D

But we still need a WhereIsIt? Mini-Review, are you up for it? :) According to http://fileforum.bet...hereIsIt/966364791/1 it's a decent program.

Thanks Deozaan and vrgrrl! Blogger will get a closer inspection then :)

gothic - nice find.  This was pretty much my thought when I first heard about 'blogs.  Once again, I figured I was just missing something.  Sort of like when peple put a ring in their nose; I don't understand the motivation, but maybe I'm out of the loop.
Let me just say this: I wouldn't want to read ~99% of the existing blogs - but something similar could be said about available books and music on the market... so? :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Keyboard friendly media player
« Last post by brotherS on April 20, 2006, 08:53 PM »
I'm sorry to hear that, I like Winamp a lot and could control everything I regularly do with the keyboard.

If you don't get an answer here, try http://forums.winamp.com/ - mostly friendly guys there.

In https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3323.0, noth(a)nk.you told us about OverDisk:

I still think WinDirStat (free!) has the best interface:

Get it at http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/

Redhat and other w.bloggar users: vote/review it at http://fileforum.bet...bloggar/1017372453/1

w.bloggar needs you there!

Why this is so lowly rated is beyond me. I use it and love it. It works perfectly with Blogger.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Search MP3
« Last post by brotherS on April 20, 2006, 02:53 PM »
Usually I'm using Winamp's media library to look for mp3s, especially if I remember only parts of the title. But even though Winamp has indexed all songs, I have the impression that your program is faster when looking for the right song!
Depending on what exactly you are doing with your music, MediaMonkey (https://www.donation...index.php?topic=2684) or something like that might be a good choice too, check it out!

General Software Discussion / Re: Mp3 catalog/database programs
« Last post by brotherS on April 20, 2006, 02:51 PM »
A quick update: I like MediaMonkey even better now, it's great to archive old mp3 files on CD or DVD. Give the CD/DVD a unique name when burning (i.e. date when burned), let MediaMonkey add its content to the database and you are ready to search all your mp3 files (whether archived or still on your PC) in no time!

If you want to test it (it's free!) you'll find the URL two posts above.

I know we have a few bloggers here, so let me ask you these questions:

- if one wants to start a blog, should one be using one of the free services or is there some huge disadvantage?

- if yes: which free services is the best?

- is there a way to easily move blog entries (including containing images) from one blog service to another? (for example when starting with a free service and then moving it to one's own homepage)

General Software Discussion / Re: what kind of keyboard you use?
« Last post by brotherS on April 20, 2006, 09:03 AM »
Since no one has mentioned it, I'd like to bring up the future of keyboards.  It uses my new favorite thing, organic LED (OLED).
I prefer to say OLEDs are a future of keyboards, not *the* :) A tiny, but important difference ;) I think it's a safe bet to say that regular keyboards will still be around for many years.

OLED is really cool because when the light is off, you can't even tell there's light there, so it blends in the surroundings.  Not many things use it now, but my new minidisc player uses it and it's sooo nice looking.
Could you post an URL that has pictures please?

I love Lifehacker.  Read the feed whenever something new pops up, and visit several times a week!
Nice :)

And since that was your first post - welcome to the forum! :)

Living Room / Re: Firefox CPU usage
« Last post by brotherS on April 20, 2006, 08:28 AM »
FFox does have insane memory usage compared to IE tho.
"A lot more" is true regarding the possibilites of FF vs. IE though too! :D
True... but you can get sorta all that functionality by using some other IE-based browser like Avant or Maxthon :P
No way. I used Avant Browser myself and had a look at Maxthon too, but Firefox is by FAR more customizable!

Yup, that's how *I* got here. Don't know exactly what I'll find because I'm not very advanced, but I'm trying to educate myself. Thanks for the nice welcome.
You could start with https://www.donation...m/Software/Skrommel/ after you checked the obvious stuff like Screenshot Captor etc. from https://www.donation.../Software/index.html .

:)

Thanks for the review! I need to read it in detail later (talk about GTD!  ;) ), but it looks great!

Cool! He didn't get it totally right ("hundreds" must include the Coding Snacks, and while they are great, they don't need a key code to be entered), but it's still a nice description that should create some interest!

I know, but I tend to be very, very carefully when deleting files and also backup stuff (not often enough though). I don't fear filesystem crashes, but I need to enhance my backup strategy to get better virii protection...   :-\

Living Room / Man Using Paper Clip to Barter for House
« Last post by brotherS on April 18, 2006, 06:32 AM »
http://news.yahoo.co.../paper_clip_to_house

Kyle MacDonald had a red paper clip and a dream: Could he use the community power of the Internet to barter that paper clip for something better, and trade that thing for something else — and so on and so on until he had a house?

[...]

Funny idea, and quite astonishing what you can get for a paper clip! :)

I think this sounds like the best of all (asside from putting apps in C). With the page file at the outer most ring of the HDD platters it theoretically gives the best performance (I think) and being the only file should keep it from gettting fragged.
...On the other hand, it might induce more seek-time. Then again, drives are made of multiple platters. Then again-again, unless you use (memory)sucky Adobe programs, you shouldn't need the paging file.

I still vouch for keeping docs/source/data on a separate partition. It doesn't matter extremely much these days with pretty stable filesystems like NTFS, but a "combined" partition like brotherS's does get more traffic and abuse. If you have docs/source/data on a separate partition, that wouldn't be affected by a FS crash on the "high activity" partition.
Maybe I should also add that I'm not only using NTFS but also RAID 1 (http://en.wikipedia....pendent_disks#RAID_1), that's pretty safe. :D

Yes, that's a good article, thanks!
