Yeah I can do that no problem -- good idea.

And thanks for all the help testing, tomos!

I'm guessing your problem may only show up when a clip has multiple formats (unicode, etc.); so keep experimenting; it's very likely the problem is still there and just needs the right combination of factors -- when you figure it out let me know so I can fix it.

I need more information.

Do you mean that you are right-clicking on a clip and then choosing to paste using the template (can you try that and see if it works?)

Or do you mean you are using the unusual option in CHS to paste *EVERY* clip using the quick template automatically and always?

Ok let me see if I can reproduce and fix.

What I mean is, what procedure are you using to trigger the paste via template function -- since there are a few different ways to trigger it.

Minor update: The Advanced Format rule editor now gives you some help in the form of a drop-down list of recently seen and common clipboard formats:

Unfortunately, the alpha version is completely ignoring the quick paste template at my end. It simply results in a simple paste of the clip. Probably, I am overlooking some option.
More likely you found a bug in the alpha..  Can you tell me a bit more how you are using the quick paste template?

Obviously this new feature needs testing and I understand that it's going to be something only advanced users even know how to deal with -- but let me know if you spot anything funky.

The one confusing part is probably that there are now a bunch of redundant ways to tell CHS what formats to capture..
In addition to these advanced rules, you can specify elsewhere to ignore certain common formats and set size limits on those.  Those will override any advanced rules.
The main motivation here is that I feel the advanced rules are going to be too advanced for most users, and I still want to give them some control.

I am having a hard time reproducing the error but I feel you must be on to something... I hope you will keep hunting and see if there is some other additional piece to the puzzle!

I just wish I knew what happened that caused the corruption in the first place.. I tried using the new version with my old database and it didn't have any trouble, so it's a bit of a mystery why the problem happened in your case.

Next would be, look in the Backups directory, see when your most recent backup is from, and confirm its recent.
Then, assuming so, you could delete the files in your Database directory (after you have backed it up just in case!)
Note that the Files/ subdirectory is image files captured, so you probably don't want to delete that.

(and some of the files in the Database directory are themselves alternate backup files, but let's ignore that for now).

After you delete the files in that Database directory (ClipTable.* and GroupTable.*) try restarting CHS and letting it start with a blank database.
Then go to the options and the maintenance tab and try to restore a recent backup in your Backups directory.

Meanwhile I will test the latest version here on my old database to see if I broke the upgrade process recently.

Major new feature, a custom advanced rule system to control what formats get saved:
Screenshot - 3_17_2020 , 5_24_46 AM_ver001.png

The idea is that advanced users can use this feature to have CHS ignore formats that are unneeded and take up too much space, or keep a mostly text database with only a few exceptions where you want more formats, etc.

You could either set the default action to be to store all clipboard formats, and then just set a rule for blocking certain ones, or do the opposite, set the default action to reject all formats, and just set a rule to capture the rare ones you care about.

Just make sure you enable the formats in the main capture tab too.

I was just saying I wanted you to make copies of the CHS backups so that you had those safe with no chance of overwriting them, before trying to fix the problem.

I'm sorry this happened -- I don't know why it has, the new version should be able to run on the old database fine, but with all the recent changes I may have broken something.  Probably an easy fix.

BUT

First thing first, exist CHS (terminate if need be), and then go find your CHS Database directory, and zip it up so you have a backup of it.
Then do the same with your CHS Backups directory.
These should both be under your documents/DonationCoder/ClipboardHelpAndSpell directories.

CHS is pretty good about making backups so you should see recent backups in those directories.  You need to make a zip/copy of these backups so that they are preserved safely.

Once you have that backed up I'll help figure out whats going on.

Well you can already do that for the most part in CHS, just make a virtual group and tell it to show all clips with a specific ParentId value (which designates its group), or various combinations thereof.

1. OCR.. i will keep thinking about this.
2. Wiki-linking.. this is the more difficult case where I you are using CHS to do good things that are at the boundary of it's usefulness.  So it's not that I at all disagree with your value of this feature, I just can't help but feel that a better solution would be for me to start over and write a proper note taking/idea program rather than try to put features in CHS that feel awkward for it.

Remove or increase the arbitrary text limit in text clips: We need more text!
Save full path+filename of copied or cut folders/files: e.g., R:\Temp\VPN_4396\ ..or... R:\Temp\VPN_4396\VPN_Lock.dat
Retain metadata (URLs): - better retention of metadata relating to clipped web page data.

I think 7-9 are implemented in the alpha with multi-format copying.

Cloning:
Can you explain #4?

919
Yes I think this is absolutely the way to go if you can afford it.  Keep the last computer as a backup and don't repurpose or dispose of it.  It's not just useful as a backup, but as a source of spare parts or parts, etc.
920
I agree with the Cruft concept.. It's not just accumulated cruft, but accumulated modifications, settings, stuff you don't remember you did, etc.

Because of that, I think when practical, if you have the energy, it's healthy to start from scratch and force yourself to recreate your working environment on a new operating system, and move over your documents, etc.

This is a good opportunity for you to discover where all of your documents are stored, and start over with applications at their default settings, etc.

The one main caveat I will say with this approach is you have to preserve your old hard drive in some form (either leave the old physical hard drive alone and install the os on a new one, or a new computer, or fully image the old hard drive).  That gives you plenty of time (months) to make sure you have moved all your documents over and not forgotten something.
921
New version uploaded.  I put in some better code for letting me add new (and update old) built-in virtual groups.  You should see a new "Virtual Groups" node in your left hand group tree.

Screenshot - 3_15_2020 , 5_05_33 AM.png
922
Yeah that's due to the old code not supporting unicode.  But as you say, the actual paste will be good.
923
That's a pretty good idea. Added to todo list.

Maybe you should just buy the stereo splitter and try using it in reverse, and see what happens!
