On a related note, this last bit from The H's report seems of interest:

The Cryptocat developers have since responded with a post on their development blog, expressly thanking Steve Thomas for his effort. According to the developers, the bug didn't affect private chats because it only occurred in group chats with more than two participants.

The incident has also caused embarrassment for the security specialists at Veracode. In February, the Cryptocat team proudly announced that Cryptocat had earned a Veracode Level 2 classification and a Security Quality Score of 100/100.

What I've been feeling recently is that trying different queries across multiple days can yield much better results.  Also been reminded of how good searching relevant mailing lists can be.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Window Managers and Terminals for *NIX
« Last post by ewemoa on June 30, 2013, 07:37 AM »
I still use Xfce occasionally, but the mostly-not-having-to-spend-time-arranging-windows aspect has been quite helpful for certain workflows and that's not something I've figured out how to do well in Xfce.  Now if I could just figure out why the external display here is recognized sometimes as VGA1 and sometimes as VGA2...

GridMove note
I would have been a GridMove user if I had the discipline to figure out its configuration :)

On a side note, I think Gothi[c] mentioned that fluxbox could be configured to do tiling in a manner similar to dwm, i3, and the like.  May be I'll give that a try one of these days.

Hadn't seen Remmina.  Thanks for the tip!

I was about to suggest Nemo,...

WHY does it install into /AppData ? Is "AppData" the new "Program Files"??

Along those lines, here's a related StackOverflow post:

Screenshot Captor / Re: taking screenshot WITHOUT saving to file
« Last post by ewemoa on June 28, 2013, 06:28 AM »
I didn't succeed in discovering anything useful from what was pasted.

With a default installation of the latest beta (portable version anyway), after a capture I get a dialog box with the title "Screenshot Captor - New Screenshot".

There is a section named "Operations" and one of the drop-downs contained therein is named "To clipboard:".

One of the choices within the drop-down is labeled "To clipboard: Image".  I chose that option and heard a sound.  Pasting to the Paint application showed that a capture had occured.

Subsequently, I searched a number of folders via SSC's main window but didn't manage to find any saved file of what had been captured.

May be it is supported out-of-the-box then?

If it's not possible to not save, please consider supporting this functionality :)

A recent article on some open source RSS alternatives can be found here.

Thanks for the link

Happen to be trying one mentioned there: newsbeuter.  It bills itself as "the Mutt of RSS feed readers" and it does feel it a bit like it.

3) Galaxy Note 2 (great overall phone, but big)

I've used the Note 2.  I wouldn't recommend it if you like smaller devices.  My short take on this device is -- if you have significant experience with gadgets there's a good chance you'll notice a fair number of things that are not quite right.

Some such details include (but are not necessarily limited to the Note 2):

-The menu and back button are not visible all of the time - only when they light up - this turned out to be particularly bad for me in combination with the next point
-The back button is on the right of the home button (contrary to how browsers do it, how some (all?) Nexus devices do it, etc.)
-AFAICT, you can't use the stylus to press the menu button nor the back button
-Pulling the stylus out adds a new home screen panel which doesn't appear to be accessible otherwise

There are some interesting things being tried out with these devices (e.g. use of the stylus, vibration when stylus removed, etc.) but my impression is that they don't quite mesh well together.  Neat to play around with, but I find it difficult to recommend as a device to be relied on (e.g. I don't want to go through being locked in and then left in the dark if I create a fair bit of data using the stylus-based notes).

I feel fooled :)

So where is the app that is going to come out of this regarding the facilitation of exchange and management of change suggestions in written works?

Um...I think that's called a version/revision control system? ;)

Yes...it'd be nice if all participants already knew how to use such a system :)

Non-Windows Software / *NIX: Window Managers and Terminals
« Last post by ewemoa on June 18, 2013, 09:34 PM »
Had been using dwm and st for a bit, but due to not figuring out a good way to maintain my local installations of them, decided to look for alternatives.

After trying a few alternatives, came across and temporarily settled on i3 and lilyterm.

On the window manager front, was looking for:

- ability to use the Windows key as a modifier for window manager commands
- configurability without having to recompile source
- tiling support (as well as at least some support for floating)
- focus-follows-mouse support
- ability to support some form of "bar" (e.g. for indicating workspace / tag names, display time, etc.)
- multiple screen support
- ability to have certain windows start up on specific workspaces (or be tagged automatically)

Basically something like dwm, except for the aforementioned issue.  echinus came close but I encountered a few issues that kept me looking.

On the terminal front, was looking for:

- dark background by default
- scrollback buffer (along with decent size) by default
- multilingual support
- easy configuration

Tried xterm, uxterm, and mlterm.  terminator might be a good alternative, but didn't try it long enough.

Any favorites and/or recommendations?

For reference, i3 has a Google TechTalk, decent docs, an irc channel, mailing lists,  stackoverflow-like (askbot) support.

Thinking about the wariness, the following thoughts come up:

- Is the developer competent?
- Has the source been examined appropriately?
- Does the binary for the program behave as advertised with no malice and no serious errors?
- Not thrilled about auth information living in my clipboard
- Not thrilled about storing my auth info digitally -- this just hasn't worked out for me over the years
- Seems like a juicy target of a program for malicious code to modify
...

So where is the app that is going to come out of this regarding the facilitation of exchange and management of change suggestions in written works?

Now where did we put our appropriate timestamps?

Installation under Arch was straightfoward.

Tried the echo server with some success:

Here is a simple echo server which will send your message back to you after being received: BM-orkCbppXWSqPpAxnz6jnfTZ2djb5pJKDb

Found the following thread at their forums:

Quite technical.  IIUC there are some references to other similar independent efforts as well.

Thanks 40hz :)

The Bitmessage Wiki mentioned the following article:

Thought the following (also from the wiki) was worth noting:

Security audit needed

Bitmessage is in need of an independent audit to verify its security. If you are a researcher capable of reviewing the source code, please email the lead developer. You will be helping to create a great privacy option for people everywhere!

I have been using the following handy tip in SmartGitHg recently with some success:

Depending on the conditions, I found it's possible to modify the content of commits older than the most recent [1].

The most recent commit can be made available for editing via the "Undo Last Commit" command.  Sometimes it's possible to use the "Reorder Commits" command to make an older commit the most recent commit.  Once that is done, the "Undo Last Commit" command can be applied to it, modifications performed, and a new replacement commit can be created.  It may then be possible to reorder the new commit back into its original position (so-to-speak).

When this works I find it simpler than doing git rebase -i <sha-of-parent-commit-of-interest> from the command line.

[1] Strictly speaking the commit isn't being modified -- a new sequence of commits is created with appropriate content, but I assume most folks interested in doing this sort of thing know this already :)

But thanks is really due Heise Online's The H-Open site. :-*
