Living Room / Apple, Champion of Censorship
« Last post by Renegade on December 22, 2010, 05:05 PM »
Sigh... These goons never cease to provide me with lots of material to rant about...

http://kewlaid.net/2...ensorship-yet-again/

Apple has come out as a champion of censorship and hero to fascists everywhere yet again as it pulls an independently produced Wikileaks application from its app store.

In a dazzling display of brilliant courage and fortitude, Apple stood up to rebel scum and free-thinkers everywhere, bravely pulling Igor Barinov’s “Wikileaks App” and thwarting villains and terrorists worldwide, letting you sleep easier at night knowing that the iPhone platform is yet again protected from the forces of darkness.

There's really nothing that can be done as it is happening server-side. (I crapped myself when I read the first email thinking that my machine may have been compromised. It was a relief when I found out it wasn't.)

If you found an exploit for Wordpress, then you might be able to do something about it depending on the severity. But in all likelihood, you could only do it for a site that you control, and not for all Wordpress sites, which makes fixing the problem illegal irrespective of the scope, so why risk jail to fix the problem just for yourself?

I checked and the code is gone. Looks like they've gotten rid of it.

Nope, it's still there on your site as well as all other Wordpress.com blogs. They have not removed it at all.

Damn. You're right. They just moved the code up. I only checked the end where it was before. (Busy coding some imaging software right now and got lazy...)

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: Duplicate Photo Deleter
« Last post by Renegade on December 22, 2010, 12:39 AM »
CARP! I wish I'd known about this yesterday. I just moved 3,000+ photos into the same directory on someone's computer because they were spread all over, and there were plenty of duplicates, but sometimes the filesize didn't match. So instead of going through every one comparing filesize and timestamp, I just had TeraCopy automatically rename the naming conflicts.

Is there any way this app can find duplicates if they don't have exactly the same name?  e.g. PIC-1028.jpg & PIC-1028_2.jpg.

At the moment I'm only comparing file sizes. File names are irrelevant and I don't look at them at all.

I plan on adding in better comparisons by loading the actual image then comparing that data.

I won't be doing anything like ratios in image comparison, e.g. these pictures are 80% similar. I just think that's a stupid comparison method that's completely unreliable. e.g. You take a picture of someone you are with against a backdrop  of some nice scenery, then they take your picture. It's a small amount of difference, but it's important. Since the amount of coding to do facial recognition and all that is really far beyond what I'm prepared to put in right now, I'm not even going to try because I don't see any point in doing a crappy job.

The software right now is stable, but alpha (feature incomplete).

DC Gamer Club / Re: SteamPrices - a better way to shop for bargains on Steam?
« Last post by Renegade on December 21, 2010, 11:16 PM »
It happens everywhere, eg. Why is Windows OS more expensive in Australia?

Because EVERYTHING is more expensive in Australia... :( (I could rant and rant and rant about prices here. Meh, think I will... :D )

NSFW rant
Research shows that the average Australian consumer ass hole is 30% to 500% larger than their American counterparts. Further analassis of Australian retailers detected unusually high concentrations of fecal matter on their cocks. While the correlation seems to be strong, further analassis needs to be done, starting with some good old fashioned fisting...

Market segmentation like that is really annoying, especially inside of the same language.

The worst part is that it's only got to do with getting as much money as possible no matter what.

The core problem, as I see it, is that we have an idea of fairness, and this just doesn't seem fair.

Across different languages it seems reasonable to have different prices. They're different products at that point. Who would pay $5 for a game in Chinese that you can't read, and hence can't play? But $15 for the English version? Makes sense. Kind of...

That's where I think it's good to offer products cheaper in different economies. e.g. Instead of $50, sell for $5 or less in third world countries. When large parts of the population make about $400 a year, I can't see maintaining a price that's way out of reach.

But that's a very different case from the US vs. the UK vs. Canada vs. Australia. I can't see a valid justification there.

On a serious note about prices here in Australia, I've heard people try to justify it by saying that it's an island and far away... However, take for example a cheap toy doll that sells for $10, and then take an iPod Touch 64GB that sells for $399 in the US and $499 in Australia. ($1 AUD is about $0.98 USD, so close enough to 1:1) $100 more expensive? If the "island far away" BS were true, the toy doll would be $110. After all, it's transportation costs, right? BS. It's greed, pure and simple. (And hence my rant about prices above.)

Transportation and logistics costs are fixed. Here are the iPod Touch prices:

Australia:
8GB A$289
32GB A$378
64GB A$499

US
8GB $229
32GB $299
64GB $399

Differences:
8GB $60
32GB $79
64GB $100

They are all the exact same size with NO difference in logistics costs. But the price difference doesn't reflect that.

I was recently in Cambodia at Angkor, and the vendors there pester the Hell out of you to buy, even when you show them that you have what they are selling already. As 1 example, my wife bought a scarf for $1, but the price for it started at $8. It's capitalism on steroids. I can't really blame people there for it though as they are extremely poor. Poor as in no electricity or running water poor. Like really really poor. They're trying to survive.

But I have a hard time with a company in the first world blatantly ripping off customers. They have no excuse.

Well, I'm rambling now...

But the Steam Prices site looks very cool~!

Anyone know of any good proxies (paid ones) that let you get different IP addresses?

Developer's Corner / Re: Your software — screencasting — why do it?
« Last post by Renegade on December 21, 2010, 10:11 PM »
Am I the only person who hates screencasts and finds them to be almost the worst possible way to make tutorials or even put together a demo? Like tutorials in a game, I find them terribly ineffective for teaching.

They're useful for some people. I don't think they should replace documentation though, and I think they really should be accompanied by the script.

Some very good advice in there though.

Still, I think a lot of people really don't understand the massive workload it takes to get a good screencast done. It's a TONNE of work. (As in metric tonne because it's bigger. :) )

The audio alone is extremely difficult. Not many people will go to a professional recording studio to have it done though. And if you don't, you need good tools to work with the audio, and not just some 2-bit audio editor.

Timing is the most important thing, so you need to have a good video editor.

This really is a textbook case in why "the cloud" is just a stupid idea in many ways.

I was softening on the issue, and using Wordpress was part of my experiment in getting things off of my own servers and into "the cloud". I just started using my Flickr account that I've had for years now.

But this really shows how all that is so widely open to abuse. It should be flat out illegal to include agreement terms that let a company change the agreement at any time. This is a perfect example. comScore/Scorecard Research changes their agreement and screws Wordpress along with all the Wordpress customers.

I really don't know if I want to use other services much when this kind of thing goes on. Still, I want to off-load things into the cloud more, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The issue isn't about the actual services; it's about the legalese, privacy issues, and flat out abuse by unethical companies. Can I trust them? Apparently not.

I used to use Xoom many years ago, but the dotcom bust came along and it went under, and I lost everything I'd uploaded there, which was a significant amount of work. But with so many other "options" out there, companies can monetize with underhanded methods and save their necks if required.

There are just too many risks "in the cloud" for anything important.

Looks like this is "legal hacking"...

Got another response from Wordpress:

Hi,

You're absolutely right, I'm sorry about that!

We use comScore for internal analytics, and Scorecard Research appears to be one of their things.

At some point, probably very recently since you're the only one to have reported this so far, they changed their terms of service to allow themselves to "serve short surveys" to our users.

Fortunately, they have provided us with an opt-out, and we're currently in the process of doing just that.

We truly apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for reporting this to us!

I was just thinking that it would be cool if we could compile a list of sites (or things on the Internet) that are cool, educational, or simply "must sees". (No porn please.)

I think a few categories would be useful:

  • Entertainment
  • Educational
  • Useful
  • Political/Environmental/Social/Other

I'd probably rate sites only with a "MUST SEE" rating for exceptional sites.

Hopefully every few posts someone can collate them into 1 list for easy reference.

I'll start with a few I think are really good/great.

Educational
The Code Project
http://www.codeproject.com/

Educational *** MUST SEE
Wikipedia
http://www.wikipedia.com/

Entertainment
I Can Has Cheezburger
http://icanhascheezburger.com/

Entertainment
The Oatmeal

Entertainment
xkcd
http://xkcd.com/

Educational
Wikileaks

Educational
Sugar: The Bitter Truth
http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

Educational/Entertainment
George Carlin

(He's simply too smart and too funny for anyone to miss.)

Educational/Entertainment
Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
http://www.venganza.org/

(If you don't love pirates, you're going to Hell.)

Educational/Political/Social
Food Inc.

Anyways, that's a short list of a few sites and things that I would recommend to people.

I've obviously missed a lot there, but hopefully some people can help fill in some blanks with more top notch sites.

I don't believe your computer is infected with anything, and this is why...

This is very clearly at the very bottom of your page code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://b.scorecardresearch.com/beacon.js"></script><script type="text/javascript">try{COMSCORE.beacon({c1:2,c2:7518284});}catch(e){}</script><noscript><p class="robots-nocontent"><img src="http://b.scorecardresearch.com/p?cj=1c1=2&c2=7518284" alt="" style="display:none" width="1" height="1" /></p></noscript><script src="http://s.stats.wordpress.com/w.js?19" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
st_go({'blog':'17744093','v':'wpcom','user_id':'0','post':'0','subd':'drinkthekewlaid'});
ex_go({'crypt':'RDZ8LFkxbXFNLFlqbmNuOUklLytJVjAuaD9Xa1RJL2tfLixtbVZqSlprY3Byem0yVVBQJWtna1ZTZ1ZdalMuTFQmNjJ1ckYrbVVKcE1zVklXS0VobDg2cXQtR0Q4L3JiOXBXLFA4MzFxXWdkQVRYd3xWYVJQVWpwZFdTSyslJjlsai01L25PaW40ZG5kRGx5cm50NVI9THE5b0NoSmFmWz9UfkZFaVVZUiU2QmUsNzUxc20yYkVXQm1oV0JCXUN+Q1lJQXpBMU9IKzFr'});
addLoadEvent(function(){linktracker_init('17744093',0);});
</script>

Wordpress does not allow users to insert javascript code into pages. The only javascript that should be in your page code should be either code that is part of Wordpress itself or code from widgets that they approve and make available to users.

In other words, unless this is some feature you selected from some menu, preapproved by Wordpress, then Wordpress had to have added it without you knowing, or Wordpress itself got hacked (not just your site) and someone has inserted it into their wordpress code that is being used on all sites they host.

Very interesting. Thanks for that. I'll report it to them.

EDIT: Reported to Wordpress.

Yet more good suggestions folks, thank you. I would play chess but when at the in-laws it seems to act like a magnet for spectators.

In addition, in case anyone else is hunting around similarly:

The original X-COM, "UFO: Enemy Unknown" ticked so many boxes for me. It's the only game I've ever played through three full times. There's an updated version which is really nice here: http://ufo.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/   - and it's only $4.99!?

The downside is that's it's delivered via Steam. I have had a lot of trouble with those clods. They cannot seem to get the hang of my address at all, and keep insisting that I don't live in the country that I do!

I remember the original. It was amazing. Great sound effects too. You hear them in movies and TV shows today even!

But it's good to hear that I'm not the only one that's had trouble with Steam. I really loathe stubborn GeoIP stuff...

So what did Wordpress say?  And how DID ScorecardResearch put its garbage on your site?

This was the WP response I got:

Hi,

I assure you, there are no ads on your blog.

I took a look at the screenshot you posted, and there is definitely cause for concern.

We are not affiliated with ScoreCardResearch in any way, but what you're seeing is a common bit of tracking malware that you may have picked up from any site.

I recommend clearing your cache and cookies immediately and running an anti-virus scan on your computer.

Regards,

James | Happiness Engineer | WordPress.com and IntenseDebate

I ran 2 complete scans that turned up nothing, so I don't really know how it got there.

I DID install a few games though from a post in another thread. I'd never seen it before then, so it might be related. Not sure.

I can recommend the Logitech Performance Mouse MX. It's rather expensive, but certainly the best mouse I've ever had.

Love its form factor (if you're right handed). The free-running wheel is just excellent (*). Love how it uses a standard Micro-USB cable for charging (can use it to charge my phone too 8) ) and the way it connects at the front so it feels like a wired mouse if you need to use it while charging. It works on just about any surface without a mouse pad.

(*): interesting anecdote: The idea of a free-running mouse wheel actually came to me about two years before the first Logitech mouse with such a wheel was released. I've tried to modify one of my own mice to have such a free-running wheel, but failed because the wheel did not have enough mass to keep on spinning (was made of plastic).

:D

That's the one I got. On a side note: They use different model #'s in different places. Part of the corporate-alien conspiracy to control our minds through sensory overload. :) Well, not really, but is seems that silly anyways.

I really don't know why they bother. It's not like "Performance Mouse MX" is difficult to understand for people elsewhere, requiring "X" to be replaced with "950".

I actually switched the wheel back to click-mode as I like the tactile sensation, and it prevents scroll-back.
