Living Room / Re: YouTube Audio Problems
« Last post by Deozaan on October 18, 2007, 01:39 PM »
Yes, YouTube is testing a new page, and they gave a little redesign to the player. And the embedded player in other sites is even more different. If that's what are you asking... as for the sound problem, everything is fine here. Maybe you deactivated sound and that got carried over to other sites? It happened to me a few times before, and some sites were ignoring it. I think it's a cookie problem...

If you mean the mute button on the video player, I didn't have it on mute. I could watch a video on my Google Reader RSS feeds with no audio, click the link to the actual site the article was featured on and still have no audio, then click the video to take me to YouTube.com where the audio would work perfectly.

Anyway, the new player seems to have fixed the problem.

Screenshot Captor / Cropping broke my image and Undo didn't fix it
« Last post by Deozaan on October 18, 2007, 01:14 PM »
Hi mouser,

I was working on an image in Screenshot Captor, making text boxes and arrows and things, and decided I wanted to crop the image.

Well, silly me, I'm used to every other image editing software in existence in that you select the crop tool before selecting the area to crop. So I clicked crop and it cropped the entire image to the last selected area, which was a text box I was working on.

"Oh noes!" I said to myself, "What have I done?" Thankfully, I'm a semi-intelligent lifeform and I remembered about the powerful Undo feature.

I quickly pressed Ctrl-Z and got the image back, but something was very, very, VERY wrong!!!11eleventyone

The text box that the image had been cropped to was now in the top left corner of the image. That's no problem, I could just move it back to it's old position without much effort. But that wasn't the only problem! :'(

All the other text boxes and arrows were gone! And no amount of undo would bring them back. They're dead and they're not coming back.  :'( :'( :'(

Please remove this gross and negligent behavior from Screenshot Captor or else Cody gets it!

YouTube videos that are embedded on other sites are now playing sound for me too. Does the player look different to anyone else? I think they changed something.

I e-mailed YouTube support a few days ago and told them about the problem. With Typical outsourced Indian support they asked me for a specific URL of my troubles. I reiterated that any site besides YouTube.com was giving me audio problems and they didn't say anything back to me. I got a survey in my e-mail asking how happy I was with the support. I left a negative review because they didn't solve anything.

Then I turned on a video from another site and behold! Audio!

Anyone else who has had this problem recently find it fixed today?

DC Gamer Club / Counter-Strike Fun
« Last post by Deozaan on October 18, 2007, 12:13 AM »
Wordzilla recently got a server that he's using for a dedicated DC IRC server, as well as some other things. One of those other things is Counter-Strike. The game is free and Wordzilla has the download on his server. Come to the IRC channel or send Wordzilla a PM for information on where to download the client as well as the password to join the servers.

Once you get it installed, launch the game and click Find Servers, then go to the Favorites tab and select Add Server. Enter in the following details:

Counter-Strike - Server.png
Click for larger image

As you can see, there are actually twelve different maps being hosted. Each one will need to be entered manually. Here's the list of all current maps being hosted.

We've had some fun already playing the game. We've had mouser, hamradio, scancode, jgpaiva, Josh, mitzevo, and others play. Come join the fun! Below are some screenshots.

Counter-Strike - Target Practice.png
Cody helps me improve my aim

Counter-Strike - Deozaan Inside.png
I wonder who is behind these doors?

Counter-Strike - Deozaan Waiting.png
You were warned! It's me, waiting to ambush!

For those of you interested, the way we got Cody and my Deozaan Inside logo in the game was through using a custom decal. The instructions are kind of puzzling at first, but we just used a program called Easy Decal to convert an image to a decal. Then you need to rename the decal to tempdecal.wad and put it in your cstrike directory, overwriting any other tempdecal.wad you may have in there. But you're not finished. This is the most important part. You need to make the tempdecal.wad read-only so it isn't overwritten when you start the game. And there you have it!

EDIT: Added link to IRC channel.

Living Room / The Abrupt Goodbye
« Last post by Deozaan on October 17, 2007, 11:47 PM »
Here's a social experiment of a game called The Abrupt Goodbye, which is a conversation between a woman and a blind man. The entire conversation is written by people who visit the site. The only info you are given is that there is a blind man sitting on a bench in the subway and a woman comes and sits down next to him.

When you start the game you get to choose which role of the conversation you will play, the blind man or the woman.
If you pick male, you start the conversation. If you pick female, the man says something to you first and you choose the response.

Abrupt Goodbye - Look Familiar.png

But like I said every part of dialog is written by people like you and me who visit the site. It seems to have a maximum of five responses per turn, so if there aren't five, you have a chance to write your own.

Abrupt Goodbye - Afternoon.png

Any time you write your own, the conversation will abruptly end with the woman leaving.

Abrupt Goodbye - Woman is Gone.png

This is because nobody has written a response to what you just entered, so the game cannot continue on that particular line of dialog yet. Also, you will never see a response to choose from unless it has a response written to it. So if your only choice is to type in a custom response, you're the first person to see/respond to that particular thread of dialog.

It's kind of fun to see what people are coming up with. It's also built to sort the responses based on popularity. The ones that don't get clicked move down the list and are eventually deleted.

More info about the game, made by Andy Schatz can be found here: http://www.garagegam...om/blogs/44702/13730

The game that started it all

Wow this game is awesome!

I didn't know Portal was like this. I thought it was just another Half-Life game with a portal gun. I didn't know you were able to control the entrance and the exit. This stuff rocks!

Abstract "art" basically is just adults fingerpainting.

Isn't that always how it works? People want to claim themselves as better than others, so they do something ridiculous and claim it's cool?

Living Room / Re: how do you represent 'time' in your head?
« Last post by Deozaan on October 17, 2007, 04:20 PM »
An interesting thing is that I picture time as linear in my head, but when I think about it I know it doesn't work that way.

In a sense I guess that's kind of like from a child's limited understanding, looking at old photographs he might wonder when the world started having color. In his mind, it went from grayscale to color, even though that's not really the way it happened.

Or something.

But i have a hard time trying to download your videos and stuff.

Anyone else have trouble with the videos? I tried uploading the 8MB one to YouTube and Google Video but for some reason it turned out to be a super fast forward edition that played the entire 96 seconds in 4 seconds.

Hi everyone.

It's been a while since I posted in this thread, mostly due to discouragement of the project not making much progress. I finally took a step back and examined my position and came to some conclusions. Those conclusions led to some progress!  (GASP!)

It's not much, but there's a video you can watch of some turrets tracking multiple enemies and firing at them. Considering this was all done yesterday, I'd say it's neat. But it's far from perfect or complete.

Basically, the turrets just shoot every second no matter where they're aimed at. After being instructed to target a certain class of enemies, the turret will track the nearest one of that type.

For more info, see the blog -> Turret Tracking.

For the videos, I have a low-res version and a hi-res version both in AVI format: Small (~8MB) or Large (~22MB).

General Software Discussion / Re: Pando
« Last post by Deozaan on October 14, 2007, 07:13 PM »
I've used it. I thought I heard from it here but considering how old this thread is, maybe I didn't.

It's actually quite nice, and it seems that it's not exactly BitTorrent.

I've only shared files with one other person, so I'm not sure how it works with lots of people, but to me it seems like you upload your file to a server (with resuming abilities!) and the server then serves the file to the other person. I've had the other person work on the download while my computer was off or pando was not active, as long as I had finished uploading it in the first place. It's great in that it seems to work a lot like those sites like YouSendIt, but with file resuming. It lets you add files up to 1GB but if a file is bigger than that you can easily make a split archive and just send multiple files each less than 1GB.

I really like it for personal file sharing.

For speed reading I use Zap Reader. It is invaluable when I am trying to catch up on my RSS feeds. It is highly customizable for a simple web app. I showed it to a buddy of mine, who showed it to a school teacher, who now incorporates it into her grade school reading curriculum. There is a introductory video on the Zap Reader home page.
 (see attachment in previous post)

I just tried to zap read this forum and it took about 2 minutes just to get to the actual posts. Useless!  :P

Why am I not surprised?  When my wife died (some time ago) I tried to cancel her Verizon cell phone account.  The customer support rep tried to talk me into keeping it!  It was surreal.  Then, when he sensed his sales pitch was failing he switched tactics and told me that cancelling the contract would incur a $175 "penalty" and that it would be cheaper for me to just keep the phone service going!

ON MY DEAD WIFE'S CELL PHONE.

Yeah, Verizon's a top notch organization.

I have a similar anecdote except I was in the terrible position of being the customer service employee. I had just finished training and started working phone support for Directv when someone called in saying that the owner of the account had passed away and they needed to close the account.

I had been trained that I always had to warn the customer about a possible cancellation fee if the account still had an active contract. I felt like such a jerk, but I did it. Then I transferred him to the retention department. :(

Shortly after that I learned that account owner death was one of the few exceptions to the cancellation fee. I still felt like a jerk, but was relieved to know I wouldn't have to do that again. :-[

Something that I just don't understand why hasn't been made widely available yet is automatic syncing of documents online and off.

It would be great to have a local client that works offline, but syncs with your online folder for when you're on the go. I know these things exist, but why aren't they more mainstream?

I know some people question the security and privacy, but for those who don't (most people, probably) why isn't this available?

In slightly related news, I recently installed Office 2007 on my wife's laptop as an upgrade from Office 2003. Because I selected upgrade it did the entire install by itself and didn't let me customize it. After that I was using her laptop and noticed a Groove button in Windows Explorer, thought it was some garbage app she had unwittingly installed, and tried to uninstall it. When I found out it was Office 2007 and that it was for file and folder synchronizing across the network, I quickly installed Groove on my other two PCs. I really like it.

Something as simple as that would be great with internet connectivity.

Find one of those "participate in these offers to win a free iPod" things. They'll ask for your e-mail address. You will get spam.

1. get a hotmail account
2. ????
3. Enjoy your spam !!

seriously, there is no step 2. I have my hotmail junk email filter set to high and its completely useless.

A few years ago I made a hotmail account and before I even used it anywhere or told anyone about it I had spam in my inbox.
