I think the point here is to help you create a standalone application that you could give to a client or a worker, so that they can use your tool like a standalone application without being overwhelmed.

I don't get it. What's this for? It's like a standalone, offline, Web 2.0 app?

I think it's a really bad Elvis impersonator.

Hmm, I just used siteadvisor to check out the site I complained about giving me spam and it says the site is okay. But it doesn't have any e-mail results yet.
8904
That's a great idea!

I signed up for an account at a site that said it didn't share my info with anyone and now I'm getting spam to that address. I know it was from them because in my gmail account I set up a dummy [username]+[SiteIsignedUpFor]@gmail.com

so for example, if my e-mail username was billybob and I signed up at somedumbsite.com, I'd do something like billybob+somedumbsite  ( at ) gmail.com

Now I'm occasionally getting spam to that e-mail address. To make matters worse, I e-mailed the site asking for more info about their privacy policy and why I'm getting spam from them and they never replied. What makes it most sad is that I've carefully protected that e-mail address for over a year and this is the first and only spam I get in it. Not counting e-mail from Xara, who won't unsubscribe me from their "special offers" list after I bought X1 from them some time ago.

Living Room / Re: Password Cracking Made Easy Thanks to the GPU
« Last post by Deozaan on October 25, 2007, 12:07 PM »
:(
Did you read the article? Sorry, but this leaves the impression, for those who will only see your comment and not read the article, that this is a bad thing. As the article points out, this is meaningless. This only allows hackers to crack very small and very simple passwords - ones like 'EatMeat' - your basic letter only 8 character passwords. If you do the math, they would need to make this whole thing work 1,000 faster just to make it crack a password in a human's lifetime. Any reasonable password cannot be cracked in any reasonable amount of time. And it is very easy just to change your password today and turn it into a passphrase, making it almost impossible within your lifetime, to be cracked. For example, change your password from 'jE84%kd^' to "*IfYouAren'tFiredWithEnthusiasm,$YouWillBeFiredWithEnthusiasm." This is a random quote I grabbed and salted it with a '*' and a '$'. This is, to all intents and purposes, uncrackable via brute force.

Okay, so I read the source article linked in Josh's post and I didn't get any of what you're saying. It left the impression to me that cracking passwords is a lot faster due to parallel processing.

It even says, in Josh's post:

The toughest passwords, including those used to log in to a Windows Vista computer, would normally take months of continuous computer processing time to crack using a computer's central processing unit (CPU). By harnessing a $150 GPU - [...] - Elcomsoft says they can cracked in just three to five days. Less complex passwords can be retrieved in minutes, rather than hours or days.

And the only hint I see about it taking a lifetime to crack a password is this:

Password cracking can be used to unlock data on a computer, but will not usually work on a banking or commercial website. This is because is takes too long to run through multiple passwords, and because a site will normally block a user after several failed attempts.

And the only reason it would take so long is because the banks and places would lock you out after a few attempts, and possibly flag the account for watch.

So I'm not sure where you're getting your info on a "reasonable" password taking an unreasonable amount of time to crack. Then again, I suppose that means I should ask your definition of a "reasonable" password.

Is "*IfYouAren'tFiredWithEnthusiasm,$YouWillBeFiredWithEnthusiasm." reasonable to you? Do you really want to type that in every time?

I'm probably slightly above average when it comes to passwords, thinking a mix of letters and numbers is reasonable. Strange characters would be good, and long strings of jumbled nonsense would be the best, but not from a usability standpoint.

EDIT: I typed this up while the previous comments were made. I'll read Jeff's blog now.  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Vanilla: a nice, strange forum
« Last post by Deozaan on October 25, 2007, 11:36 AM »
I've used Vanilla on a private forum since it was mentioned on this site (linked by mouser).

It's very minimalistic and provides the basic functionality I need for just a few people. It has some ajax stuff which is kind of nice. I definitely wouldn't say it has the greatest features or is the best forum software, but it sure beats rolling your own, so to speak.

That and I haven't upgraded the version since I installed it (if there is a new version) about a year ago so I'm not sure what the latest developments on Vanilla are.

Anyone want to resume creating DC podcasts? I think superboyac just volunteered to create some original music for them.  What if each episode was just an interview with a DC member?

I loved the podcasts!

Living Room / Re: Taking "digital" notes during a lecture
« Last post by Deozaan on October 24, 2007, 09:02 AM »
I've recently bought a new computer, a notebook. I'm a student so I thought about using the computer to take notes during the lecture. But it's a technical university, so there's always a lot of mathematical mambo jambo on the blackboard, and that's my problem: I do not know any program that could be used efficiently to take notes during a technical lecture.

I'd like to have a program, where I could write a text like this:

Determine the stability:
[x1';x2']=[2 3;5 2]*[x1;x2]+[0;2]*u
y=[2 4]*[x1;x2]+1*u

or similar, and the program should display a nice formatted text and the mathematical expressions with matrices. Also things like sqrt x, or x^2, or x/2, and similar, should get a nice, mathematical and readable look.

The Microsoft Equation program (installed with MS Word) is very very inefficient, because to write anything you will most likely have to use your mouse several times, and this is much slower than just typing the formulas. The tool in OpenOffice is no better for me (and I dislike the whole OpenOffice thing also). So my question is: do you know any tool that would do what I described? Or do I have to write it for myself? :)

My Math teacher did an experiment yesterday and pulled out his drawing tablet. Combining that with Powerpoint and a projector screen, we now have all the notes he writes to teach the class. Plus, he can upload the digital file online in case we miss a day.

But anyway, I suggest a drawing tablet for funky math mumbo jumbo.

Living Room / Re: Bloons Tower Defense TWO
« Last post by Deozaan on October 23, 2007, 06:47 PM »
Bloons Tower Defense #1 (see discussion here)was a very fun and very well done Tower Defense style game which i would consider one of the more enjoyable such games i've played, if not the most challenging.

Well here comes Bloons Tower Defense #2, with more kinds of towers and some harder difficulty modes.  Yes!

I like the disposable road tacks. They sure come in handy when you need something to get a few stragglers but don't have the money to buy another tower. I beat it on easy with about 11 lives left. I forgot to get a screengrab though. I mostly used tacks, but had had three cannons and two freeze towers to take out the lead balloons. I got a boomerang monkey toward the end, too. On the last level I sold a bunch of my tacks and my boomerang monkey to buy a supermonkey. I think I probably could have spent the money on the road tacks and won with just those.

$3600 for the super monkey, $25 for the road tacks. If I spent the $3600 on road tacks, that's 144 road tacks. Each tack can pop 10 balloons before it goes away. That's 1,440 balloons.

Anyone who knows any little bit of coding could program something like this for their own private use and host it somewhere. Can't really see paying $20 a year for the rest of my life to have a machine tell people my secrets I was too afraid to tell while I was alive.

I can't imagine there's a big market for something like that.

what about dust ??

It will get dusty in your PC case. And really, the thing is just in the "open air" inside your case. But the thing is, it's protected and held firmly in place by the case.

A little thing like this on your desktop is sure to get knocked around. Maybe someone would even trip on the cord. Too great a chance for damage to consider any of the other benefits such a device might bring, in my opinion.

Like, instead of spilling your drink over the keyboard, you choose your newly acquired HDD. And you've just finished making a backup. And the HDD in your computer fails... :o

Hey, maybe someone will use it as decoration ;D

Exactly. Anyone who has kids has got to know something bad will happen to that HDD sitting out there in the open. I don't have any kids, but I have 16 nephews and nieces. Bad idea to have the thing open like that!

You really want your hard drive sticking out in the middle of the air? Have some decency and at least cover that thing! ;)

Okay, so first sentence was serious. Second was a joke. I wouldn't like my HDD in open air. Something about it doesn't seem right.

Another update for Docoto Defense:

You won't see much of a difference visually between this week and last week, but the internal code for targeting is a lot more flexible.

Read all the details in the blog entry: Target Decision Making

I love the detail of the little guy outside the spaceshuttle!
I wonder why he's confused, though. Could you ask Audrey, Ralph? :)

I don't think he's confused. He's just the "?" Peg Person in the DonationCoder logo. See how there are three of them, "?" "011110" and "!" at the top of the site?

would make a great logo like that with a black background

Thanks. The black background is the picture of the pumpkin outside in the night with a lit candle in it.

I've never been very artistic with pumpkins, but I once made one of a logo for a website my brother and I started up.

GoldToken Horse Glowing.jpg

GoldToken Horse.jpg

The logo can be seen on the website: GoldToken.com <-- Turn-based games website, like Chess, Checkers, Battleship, and other classic games.

Anyway, If someone makes an outline of Cody that would be a fun carving to make.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Synergy: Sharing your keyboard and mouse
« Last post by Deozaan on October 18, 2007, 11:44 PM »
I was thinking about purchasing Stardock's Multiplicity and did a search for it here on DC and found this thread. I forgot about Synergy.

I have a few questions that maybe somebody can answer. First off I see that there hasn't been a release of Synergy since April 2006. It is so stable that no new releases are necessary, or has the program fizzled out? Multiplicity is still being updated by Stardock and has been proven to work with games. How well does Synergy work with high-end games? Does the game take a hit in FPS when it is used? I also don't like that Multiplicity is Windows only as I am not.

I guess I can try Synergy and then the 15-day trial of Multiplicity, but that seems like work.  ;)

So, any reason I shouldn't go with Synergy?

I don't think I ever tried any high end games on a PC I wasn't directly controlling. I don't think it would affect the FPS, since you're still displaying everything and processing everything on the same computer, but I do wonder about the speed in which the mouse updates. Kind of like lag in a network game. Still, if it's a LAN connection it should be pretty quick. I can't see why it wouldn't work well. Just remember to lock the screen so your cursor doesn't stray off to another monitor.

it takes 2+ days to send the newsletter emails because there are 45,000 of them and they have to be staggered over time or they will kill the server.

Maybe you could change it so it gives Supporting (donating) Members some higher priority in the list?

The blind man tells the woman he loves her perfume 8)

He might. But, if you look at the example pictures I posted, every one of those options where you can click "Say" or type your own can be chosen. So for instance, if you're playing as the man and you pick "You look familiar." The woman will come back and say one of:

"How can you tell?"
"What are you saying? All black people look alike?"
"You mean I SMELL familiar?"

Or something else someone typed in.

So in that same example, if you were playing as the woman and you picked "You mean I SMELL familiar?" then someone (maybe yourself) may have written "Yeah, I love your perfume!" which might be the response you get.

It's interesting, and I think it will continue to get more interesting as more people play with it and come up with different branching dialogs.

« Last post by Deozaan on October 18, 2007, 02:43 PM »
i will actually see if i can't fix that.. it's hard to preserve all the object position changes that happen when you crop.

Placing them in their proper positions isn't nearly as annoying as having to create them again and type out the text again.

Or maybe make it so you can't crop while in Object Selection mode?

Well.. Regarding the crop function, actually paint.net also works like that, i prefer that behaviour.
You're right about undo, though. It should really Undo :)

I don't mind the odd crop behavior. It's definitely rare in the way it works, but it's okay enough... as long as Undo works properly.
