Popular saying from way back in the Hippy Era: The only time it ain't complete BS is if you can actually do it!

I've not heard that one before, but I like it. :)

Music does NOT work for me.

In common with many other pro and semi-pro musicians, I cannot simply listen to (or ignore) music when it's being played. I'll immediately start analyzing, evaluating, critiquing, and processing it. If I don't know the piece, I'll subconsciously try to learn it. If I do know it, I'll mentally play along - or even worse, start playing with it.

:) Which is why I find music that I already know very well, like Slayer, or dance/trance music to work very well. New music makes it difficult as I'm then trying to figure out chords and fingerings. I usually don't have the problem of mentally playing along, though it does happen. But I'm far from being pro or semi-pro -- happens to happy hobbyists as well.  :)

The repetition in dance music is enough to stop me from "playing along" as after a short period I get bored and can focus again. It breeds familiarity very quickly.

Looking into Google TV ads:

http://www.google.co...ads/guide/index.html

With the average American watching over 150 hours of television per month...

Wow. I'm stunned. That's basically a solid week with no breaks.

A newfie friend of mine shouted that at his brother (also a friend) once when he was really pissed at him. We all laughed our butts off.

I should probably clarify a bit there.

I put on movies and TV shows that I've already seen while I'm working. They're not new DVDs or anything. I've already seen them, and in many cases, more than once.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer S06E07 is a favorite as it's a musical, and probably one of the best TV shows of all time.

For music, I can't handle it on speaker. Too distracting. I put loud music on speaker for cleaning the house. For working, I need headphones.

Trance music or dance music or rave or whatever -- is usually best for me to work -- the consistency of dance music along with the (often) lack of lyrics lets me get "in the zone". Though other kinds of music are good except for rap -- rap I find distracting and only good for mindless tasks.

I think the type of music/video is important.

When I do audio software, it's obviously nothing except headphones and the software I'm working on.

But I'm curious to find out what other people's habits are.

Good points nudone.

I used to buy mid-range CRTs well into the LCD revolution because they had better color then. Now, I don't do any graphic work that needs any real degree of precision, so if it displays well enough for text, it's good enough. Eye-strain is my only concern. But I've fixed that with my desk facing a window and the monitors fairly far back.

A friend of mine has an SGI monitor that works beautifully. It's something like 10 years old or so now, but it's crystal clear. He does FOREX on it. :)

I threw out 5 CRTs when I moved from Korea, but only 3 were really any good. 1 of them was a very good flat panel CRT. But now, looking around, there basically are no CRTs available anymore. Nobody makes them. Makes me feel a tad old... But I'm not. NOT, I say! NOT~! :P :) :D

I still want that lovely 6-panel...

now that i've got the monitor arrangement below, i've found myself hardly ever using the top monitor. it just seems too high up and uncomfortable to look at. too annoying to move the mouse up there too. maybe i need to sit higher up, or just make more of an effort.

so, for me, multi-monitor setups tend to look cool but aren't really that practical. i think a good setup would be something like two 1920 x 1200 (24") screens. maybe ones that you can flip to portrait.

 (see attachment in previous post)

Nice setup~! :D

I like to play movies or TV shows on one monitor while I work. It's just nice to have some noise.

The 4th top one would be perfect for that.

My current setup is 22" - 15" - 24". The 22" died -- going to try to revive it -- but I'm not expecting any miracles. It's getting replaced tomorrow with a 24" Samsung BX2440 -- it has portrait mode, which is important. I'm kind of hoping that I can procrastinate reviving the 22", get the 24", then revive the 22", and get rid of the 15". However, with the iMac on the desk as well, that's a bit crowded.

I want the dreamy 6-panel monitor~! ;(

I think if being intuitive wasn't a supposed strong point, a "hallmark" even, of Apple products, threads like this wouldn't exist, or would not be so contentious. If the big deal was just industrial design, products that look nice and are physically well made, then UI issues and inconsistencies like these wouldn't grate so heavily. But since the "Apple experience" *is* sold as easier and more intuitive, it makes these issues all the more frustrating and makes them bigger targets for critics.

Yes, exactly!

If a person is always smugly telling everyone how perfect he is in every way, people are going to be very eager to point out his flaws. If another person admits he has flaws but tries nevertheless, people will be more forgiving and willing to overlook his shortcomings.

Well put. It's fine to be arrogant if you can back it up.

I need a new monitor as my portrait one died. I've decided on a Samsung BX2440, but then I saw this:

Oh god oh god oh god oh god~! I want 1. Errr... Make that 2! Give me 180 degree monitors~!    :D

It doesn't have portrait mode, but I'd forgive that small omission. :P

But at $4k... Ummm... I'll go with the BX2440 for now. :)

I've been through seven MX Revolution Mice. All eventually fail due to very poor microswitch position design in the left button. Sure, mouse buttons do wear out over time but the MX Revolution has a much worse track record than any other mouse on the market. Check the Logitech forums and you will see that.

There is a way to repair the microswitch but it is not easy. It is very tiny and it doesn’t go back together as easily as it comes out! Kinda spring loaded. Here's a link to the repair instructions:

http://www.overclockers.com/mouse-clicking-troubles-diy-repair/

Also, Rich Owens, the developer of UberOptions, an advanced configuration utility for Logitech mice (add-on for SetPoint) has a page with info about Logitech's oft-failing microswitches here:

http://uberoptions.net/logitech-microswitch

Jim

Thanks for posting that.

click-dragging releases before button is released

That was the major problem on my old Logitech mouse, and the main reason to get a new one. Mind you, the mouse was pretty old -- from like 2004 or 2006 or so. It had a lot of miles on it.

Wow! When we all said "Get a blog, man!" you really took it to heart didn't you? ;D

The site looks really good. Especially the 'serrify' font and the non-blingy, non-Web 2.0 newspaper vibe. Feels like something a cranky person would host. Sarah Palin, our current crank Diva (in every sense of the words 'crank' and 'Diva'), would probably feel right at home since something about it also says "ALASKA!" to me - even though for no particular reason I could ever hope to explain. And no, I have not been drinking. (Think maybe I should start?)

It's just a theme I got from WordPress. It seemed bright and cheery, so there we go! :)

I thought the same thing though - Alaska. Or West Coast North America at the least.

Seriously however, looks really good. Looking forward to listening to you vent. Probably won't comment all that often since I tend to agree with you more often than not. (Hmmm...wonder what that says about me?)

Hahaha~! We do tend to agree on just about everything.

BTW - Are you at peace with your inner-sociopath? :P :D

P. S. +1 with you on Wordpress. I must have tried 20 CMS/blog platforms before deciding to go the WP route on a site I'm in the middle of planning. It is just one very cool piece of code. And the community that formed around it is terrific too. Good code. Good people. (40hz is completely happy with a platform software decision for once. Might even be a first now that he's thinking about it. )

I'm liking WordPress more and more all the time. I had one glitch with a plugin that required a reboot (folder could not be deleted), but after that it's been smooth sailing. I like how it's so easy to install and configure things. Other CMSes are much more difficult or involved. At the end of the day, WP just makes it easy to get stuff done.

Nifty! I'm going to have to have a read there~! :D

I hope that I can port some of the ideas over to FL Studio as I just bought it... :)

They're legitimate criticisms just as "it works for me" is legitimate. Where I start to get annoyed is when people *tell* me it works for them, but what I *observe* is just as much - if not more - frustration, confusion, etc. as the average Windows user... Or such a severe limiting in what they bother to try doing with the device (due to being trained through negative reinforcement that trying to do more only leads to pain and suffering :D) that I'm inclined to say "Well, try doing *only* those things with a Windows or Linux box and see how much harder (or *not*) it is..."

I think that in the distant past a lot of the hype was likely true. You didn't need to fart around with binding NICs on Macs like you had to on NT4. However, the current state of affairs is quite different, and it's that lack of acknowledgment of reality that proves frustrating to listen to.

I must say though, currently iOS is easier than Android, though not by much.

I do find that things are easier on Windows/Linux than on OS X. A lot of things are little, like Windows and Linux are able to maintain connections to storage devices where OS X drops those connections all the time (network connections as well). OS X makes me re-establish connections all the time, which is simply a pain. Though I do tend to keep my computers running all the time and only shut them off when I leave the country or am out of the city for an extended period.

When you spend a lot of money on a device, there's more incentive to "love" it though. That works in Apple's favor, and I would really like to know some hard facts about real usage and problems there and the attitudes that people take to and away from their platform choices. To me it seems like many Apple users simply surrender to "oh, THAT is how it's done..." whereas that attitude doesn't exist so much in Windows/Linux because there are many more ways to get anything done. e.g. The Ubuntu Software Center works similar to how the Apple iTunes/Ape/Mac Store works, but is simply one option, and not the only one or the one being forced on you.

You don't have to keep it on a flat surface is one benefit.

I find that the padded arm of my easy chair, or even the side of my leg, works just fine as a mousing surface.

Check out the MX Air. Looks like it was made for you. :D

So much for using the tool that lets you do the task better. . .

But it DOES let you do it better...

Wait a second... I have this sneaking suspicion that "better" in your universe doesn't mean "the Steve Jobs way"...

Wow... It lists a lot... But it's almost TOO big. It would work better with a piece of software to help you sort through them. Actually, it wouldn't be too hard to do... Hmmm...

Ah, cmon people, don't hate on the ipad.  I have it and it's great.  Once I got over the idea that it's not a fully functional desktop computer, I realized how useful it is.  It's the best tablet out right now, the others are not even close.

I'm not a fanboy.  I'm also eagerly waiting for a competitive Windows or Android tablet.  But it can't suck.  It has to have a nice screen, first of all.  I don't want a crappy screen.  It also needs to have as responsive multi-touch as the ipad.  If they can get those down, I'm interested.  And nothing big, bulky, plasticky and bad battery life.  I can't believe it's been half a year, and there are still no competitors.  What's the best alternative, the Samsung Galaxy tab?  I heard Windows is secretly working on a tablet friendly OS (Windows 8?) and Sony is also working on a tablet something.  that would be exciting...Sony and Windows.  But Sony is bound to screw it up royally.  And Windows...well, hopefully they can come up with something innovative and practical.  It's Sony I'm more worried about...they always have to ruin something.

I think that sucking is one thing that will go with other pads, unfortunately.

Apple has the simplest UI there. Android makes you click then scroll. With iOS, you page instead, which is easier. That's the benchmark now. Unless someone comes up with a better UI paradigm. That's tough stuff.

What Android needs is a hack that makes it page instead of click & scroll, just like iOS.

The problem with those 2 OSes is that you get more flexibility with Android, but users don't care about flexibility -- they want easy, and iOS delivers that.

Now, with Android, you can get it somewhat like iOS, but it takes... wait for it... work. :( And knowledge. Yuck. Nobody will do that.

The average user isn't savvy enough to sort large result sets. Why else would Apple not let you sort in the ape store? Because apes can't sort. But they can press a button.

To be certain, iPads are gorgeous devices. Forged in Hell on tortured baby souls by Satan's transvestite donkey witches. :D

Note: for day-to-day web use I still prefer this trackball. Takes a little getting used to at first. However, once you've acclimated, you can absolutely fly with this thing. Not cheap ($99.99 list! - and seldom discounted) but still well worth its asking price IMHO. :)

It looks like the film is $8~10 USD a roll, and those are for 24 exposures. Of expired film.

I'd agree with above -- the camera is for collecting, not for taking pictures.
