General Software Discussion / Re: Awesome article re: organization and notetaking

Looks cool.

Do you mean Chandler Jim?
- I'm still wading through the article and related articles, havent gotten to the software yet!
Some interesting stuff, some I just dont understand where it's going but will wade onwards when I have time later

I don't know how many programs Skrommel has on his page but I find it very slow to find what I want and it takes a while to fully load.  If it has a way to alphabetize it or to group them to find them easier?  :-\

Dave, the links at the top of his page are in alphabetical order
It does take time to load all right ...

Post New Requests Here / Re: Simple single exe to show/hide to taskbar
« Last post by tomos on January 16, 2009, 02:51 PM »
Whats the difference with the one i provided?

do you mean the difference between the exe you found and the one Skrommel coded?

I havent tried either but the obvious first difference is that you asked for help and someone custom-made a piece of software for you

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout
« Last post by tomos on January 15, 2009, 09:51 AM »
a couple of minor queries/ requests

1) I'm wondering is there an easy way to refresh the current folder -
currently the only way I see is to reload it - (F5 would be a nice option to have)

2) another very minor thing is:
with playmode set to random could I dictate the first file to play?

3) could there be a column with just file name ?

I've only been listening to mp3's for about 6 weeks while I work -
up to now I've been a CD man - partly because I get "earphone claustrophobia" I never got into mp3's before - so no experience with players apart from Media Jukebox which I used till now - it's good but this is very nice and "clean"
thanks,
Tom

Living Room / Re: What may you be missing?
« Last post by tomos on January 13, 2009, 03:43 AM »
a bit unfair to do this during rush hour I think -
"well there was this amazing violin player in the subway and I just had to stop" mightnt impress the boss
and if he wasnt so famous, 34$ for 45 minutes doesnt seem too bad a haul :)
but the worst must be people just ignoring you, walking by as if you dont exist when you're playing your heart out.
I see it here often - I love live music and the music on the street (no subway here ;-) would have to be fairly bad for me to ignore it.
In fairness, in some towns (countries?) buskers are more appreciated

but what am I missing, hmmm   too much I'm afraid ... have to go think about that one methinks

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: List of disc catalogers
« Last post by tomos on January 13, 2009, 02:48 AM »
Crush has posted an .exe of his Disc-Cataloger

Only to show I´m still working sometimes on my Disc-Cataloger (it´s not dead!) I decided to prove its incredible speed (I used it as base calculation in former benchmarks at the beginning of this thread) with an old tester. This should be a little bit faster than the version I used for the posted benches, but my newest routine is even faster. ;)
........

My goal is something in the style of Lazycat, Locate32 or Everywhere but with different new features and an unbeatable search speed.

Meat tenderizer?
eh, f0dder I think this will have to be dealt via PM   LOL ;D (sorry not a notion..)
Well, I was thinking of mallet-style meat tenderizers, which would be somewhat drastic imho - knocking people out? :)

I wasnt even *allowing* myself to think about what this might involve but somehow I cant stop laughing about it -
- why not -
I'll knock you out if you knock me out LOL

hi Kosimov :)

Where do I find out how to use all the stuff above this message (well, it is there now as I type, but it may not show for you when you read this)?  I am a fairly serious computer guy, having done a lot of computer design, software, etc. (I started up some companies back in 1980's and, after quite a long time of inactivity due to illness, I am starting another soon, but I never have "gotten into" the social messaging arena.)  I tend to focus on the text, and by the time I am done with that, I am so worn out I don't want to work at formatting, images, etc.!  But, maybe I will learn here....

Preview below "Quick Reply" brings you to full range of options
Tooltips show if you hold mouse over buttons

Top line is all text formatting -
Formatting can be added to text already typed - select text and click e.g. B for bold - or click B and simply start typing for bold

Second row:-
The important ones I find are
  • the one with the globe on it for urls (now very user friendly, just click and add info as requested)
  • the speech globe for adding a quote (or simply select text from another post that you want to quote, copy & then click quote button within that post - it should just quote copied text but doesnt always work
  • List (bullets) is best add after creating a list (select text, click button)
  • BBC button is for code

explore the rest and/or ask for help with specific ones if you need it
Tom

Edit/ In fact if you click "Quote" on the top of this post you will see the formatting I have used, of course that might just confuse lol
Edit2/ minor corrections

Do you keep two computers synchronized? i.e. work + home. If so, how?

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for Notes / Database Software
« Last post by tomos on January 12, 2009, 07:39 AM »
Even better, from my point of view, would be one that does all this does, saves in RTF or HTML or some other common format, and that allows any number of user-defined, hidden checkboxes that can be used to filter.

I would add a "plus one" for InfoQube (formerely SQLNotes) - in fact it even sounds like you're describing it ;)

It does save in a database format, but one that is accessible from other programmes (Jet ? ... I believe) so you might want to check that out more, but it's definitely *not* a proprietary format.
Notes are html - or mht is also an option if you want to save e.g. clipped web images as part of the file.

I only use relatively simple filtering so far but it can be *very* sophisticated, in fact the whole interface/views of items - it works on a filtering basis
Also, because it's in development there's great help available at the forum
Finally,
I've been using it for work stuff for about a year and have no worries/problems about stability (it's still in beta)

From there you can edit entries, print reports, etc to get a feel for it - it's a pretty easy program to get around in without having to resort to the docs.

thanks again for all your help 4wd

Attached are samples of the main types and they each have their own options to change how they look.  The easiest way would be to just download the software and grab the sample GEDCOM files at the Simple Family Tree site, import them and then have a play.

@4wd
- do you mean I can use the files from "Simple Family Tree" programme in the "Personal Ancestral File" programme ??
- sounds versatile!
(just double checking as I passing on the info, thanks!!)

thanks a lot for that in depth answer 4wd

my brother transferred a huge amount of family info + images to word and powerpoint, this looks more suitable - as it's free it means it would be easier to pass *all* the info on to other relatives who might want to continue research themselves
