General Software Discussion / Re: TheBrain / Personal Brain
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on July 20, 2009, 12:10 AM »
Bits du Jour is offering 3D Topicscape Pro for half off today (about $55 USD).
I saw their comparison chart to the Brain, & it looks pretty impressive.  :)

Thanks for the thought, I don't know if it's just me, but I found it difficult to get past all the 3D cones in the interface: didn't like it at all  :( (try as I might)

We're also looking for something for the whole enterprise (I think).

Has anyone been playing with Ubiquity?

That forum isn't strictly about outliners, it really covers a lot more ground than one would guess from the name.
As with DC,  :)  you also have some truly experienced and intelligent users there.

Yes, I remembered being there before once I renewed my aquaintance  ;)

They've been discussing outlining, mindmapping & pims at great length for years, and in great detail.
I found a pros/cons list on the Brain for you here, written by a participant on this forum.

That's a great post, thanks

Considerations such as printing (!!!) are nothing to play around with, though.
Have you been to the Brain's web site? You might want to trial it.
I've watched them for quite a while & it seems that they're consistently working on improving their software.

Yes, been to the website: it's very good. The BrainEKP site is based on a Brain export I think, the little Topic Map navigator at the top of the page is a great example!

Discussion today to see if we want to pursue. Next step would be to trial PersonalBrain (acknowledging all the limitations), then if there is to be a further step we'd trial EKP on the network. Slow process here: I first discussed Topic Maps some time ago...

I tried it for a while Perry, but the free version is very limited and the full version is (IMO) very expensive. So after a short time and not being able to do simple things like printing, I lost it for good.

I agree: very expensive, but that seems to be the way, especially when there is not a lot of competition. And theBrain seems to be cutting edge.

I'll probably look at the feasibility of doing something with Ontopia, but for the enterprise it's got to work.

Mind you: Enterprises can make odd decisions sometimes. We just purchased a PDF converter/reader/writer to work with our document management system for many thousands of dollars, when really a much cheaper option would be to use a good PDF editor (X-Change was my favourite). Oh, well  :-\

seems like a good place to find like-minded readers. thanks, i'll give it a try..

I think the social interaction over your books is a really interesting addition. Otherwise I'd just have a database at home too ;)

There's also anobii that I've seen.

I think I'll call it HotkeyRing (a keyring of hotkeys) - in about 30 minutes a new version should be up.

:-* Love the name... although it does sound like you've stolen someone's keys  ;)

I'm interested why you'd not use an online service like Goodreads?

It has been extensively discussed over at outlinersoftware.com:

Thank you: of course -- I never was considering it as an outliner  ;)

I had been using OCR Terminal recently which did pretty good TIFF to Word conversion, I'll have to see how this compares...

General Software Discussion / TheBrain / Personal Brain

Hi All:

I'm talking to some people at work this week about other ways to map our information/knowledge, looking specifically at visual mapping.

Has anyone  used Personal Brain or the enterprise version BrainEKP?

...or even other suggestions for enterprise knowledge management?
886
aside from the MRU stuff, which seems a perfect and valuable use.. can anyone even think of other uses for this function.. i'm having a hard time..

Bit slow in finding this thread... but anyway...

How about sorting a directory of files into dynamic "subfolders" based on a last modified time period? Eg Edited within 1 day; 3 days; 5 days; 12 days; etc.

Is that workable?
887
I'll have to try Nexus - TeraCopy renames the NEW file, which is not my hope.  I want to rename the OLD file.  Preferably with a defined name and not a standard _1, _2, _3 (but that would work too).

Nexus renames the file being copied, not the file that exists.

But I've emailed the developer: so lets see what he thinks about adding the option  :P
888
as do various file managers.

My current favourite NexusFile does: and it's extremely helpful  :D

(see attachment in previous post)
This is the screenshot of the window. I cannot change those timezone 1,2...,5 options though.

Joon's problem seems to be a Unicode problem, which I'm unsure how to rectify as my memory was that FARR didn't handle Unicode??  :-\

Is that still right? and are there no workarounds?
890
Yes that works. :)

OK...

Can you open a cmd window in your TimeZone directory and run the programme with the parameters settings <yourUTCoffset>?

For me it'd be:
C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\TimeZone>FARRTimeZone.exe settings -600

It should load the settings window. For me it's:

891
The problem is tz has not worked for me at all from the first installation. I just tried different version and the same result. Nothing happens.

OK, lets try this.

Can you run C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\TimeZone\FARRTimeZone.exe (or where ever you have it installed)? i.e. by double clicking on it?

This should be the result:
Screenshot - 13_06_2009 , 1_03_58 PM.png
892
I tried to download 1.17.0.0 version of fscript.dll and overwrite it, and in that case, if I double click on the menus, FARR windows goes away as if I selected to launch a application, but nothign happens as well.

That seems to be the problem. If you go back to the distributed version (1.8) it should be OK.

And I'll have to update my version and get it working  :-[

Presumably, therefore, these steps will fix up those having problems (since you're distributing fscript.dll v1.8.0.0):
  • Stop FARR
  • Delete or rename fscript.dll from the plugins\TimeZone folder
  • Update TimeZone
  • Start FARR

-cranioscopical (June 12, 2009, 02:11 PM)
893
I substituted fscript.dll 1.8.0.0 for 1.17.0.0 and all worked fine with TZ.
If I use fscript.dll 1.17.0.0 the problems with 'options' and 'redownload' persist.

So, for now, using the earlier fscript.dll does the job.
-cranioscopical (June 12, 2009, 02:11 PM)

So did you substitute 1.17 for 1.8?

Because I've just had a look at the zip and it's 1.8 in there?  :-\
894
I've got 1.8.0.0 installed in the TimeZone directory, and mine is working fine.

AHK version?
895
Hmmm.. I can select Options but not re download!

Are you sure?

No window should appear, but you will see the process in the task tray for the period required to download the data:
Screenshot - 12_06_2009 , 6_59_09 PM.png
896
Hi Joon:

I don't know what is wrong, but after extracting the files and exit/restart FARR, after I type tz, I see three menus, (Options, info, redownload) but I cannot select options and redownload. I can only select info and it shows the help file.

tz search does not work either. tz la for example, does not show anything.

I don't know what is the problem. Please help me out.

To me it sounds like you have not downloaded the data file, which will happen automatically (normally).

Are you connected to the InterNet when FARR starts?

Double Clicking on Options does nothing?  :-\

You using the latest version?

This thread is heading way off topic, but as long as we're off... I think the funniest "types of people" I've heard was:
There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't

I thought this was funny:
There are two types of people in the world: those who think there are two types of people in the world, and those who don't. When all is said and done, there are a bunch of different ways that the world can be divided into two groups: paper or plastic? chocolate or vanilla? Red Sox or Yankees? Or one of the geekier indices: mouse or keyboard?

eh, Mouser?

Mine was chosen for me :P

The avatar is taken from a photo of the bark of a local eucalypt species that I particularly enjoy, I'm not sure why. But when I thought about my design process I realised that it could be described as scribbling.

I remember at university we critiqued a design methodology that was remarkably similar, and I find it a relaxing method of letting the project evolve.
