Developer's Corner / Re: Coding web pages for different browsers.
« Last post by fenixproductions on January 21, 2009, 08:17 AM »
I am using Opera and Firefox mix for writing web pages at the beginning. Later I have to apply some CSS hacks when checking with IE7. The biggest work overload is always IE6 because of few reasons:
- hard to get for me (without making my OS crappy),
- very poor CSS support and no PNG,
- strange hacks required.

And I am not using conditional statements for it.

If i remember correctly, Allan posted link of site which allows testing site on multiple OSs and multiple browsers.  :-\
Good but slow sometimes:

Portable edition of IcoFX can be downloaded from official site. I would rather not take a risk getting it from different place.

Hm... Looks like they have guts (after all) to do ridiculous things:

Nice post!

I share your opinion but I afraid that:
1. it's too late,
2. they have no guts to do something.

I've been using Opera since 6.x versions and AFAIR it always was in shadows. Sadly: you might get the feeling that some users are proud to have their browser unknown.

I knew Mozilla Suite back then, which was far better than first Fx (Firebird) versions but I remember how in no time popularity changed. Aggressive strategy gave good results: starting with more and more "Get Firefox" (it was so annoying for me that I had it blocked in UserCSS), through "This web page is best to be viewed in Firefox" and "IE hatred"... ending with few dirty tricks like "Crash IE project" (even sponsored by Google for a while).

All of that made people know about Firefox. Big scale strategy Opera should take long ago but they never did. Now it's the time that even if they do something, people will recognize that as copying other browsers. It is true that Opera invented tab browsing or had adds blocking for years but others made it famous. It is true that Opera is always trying to give new advanced features which they want to simplify but the way they do so is wrong. They they overdo that. Nice example is synchronisation tool.

I will be glad if your article meets nice responce but... I doubt it change something in Opera corporation :(

Maybe they misled progress bar with some "waiting" control? ;)

Thank you for information about it.

@Karol:
1. In-line images>> You mean Lightboxes for forums?
Not really. I am thinking about possibility to avoid using horizontal scrollbar when it's not needed. Opening a picture in new window could be OK.

It looks like the ribbon is sticking around  :)

Unfortunately...

I have nothing against ribbon but a lot of people would like to have simple option to make it look like 2k3.

One thing they did wrong: they teased everyone about product availability.

Does anyone before placed big counter for private tests? It just pissed off few people because it had suggested that everyone will see Cairo. Such tricks should be only reserved for official releases.

Everything on my mind... go! ;)

1. In-line images

The most annoying things are in-line images.

Clicking on thumbnail makes picture bigger but this almost destroys whole layout of the webpage or gives unpleasant need for horizontal scrolling.

Good solution for that would be to give additional tag for popping out images in new browsers window or some overlay.

Other way is to give overlay control box similar to Internet Explorer's one with few options like:
- full screen (overlay),
- save to disc,
- fit width.

Another thing: it is hard for me to save enlarged images to my HDD. Sometimes it appears that Opera saved thumbnail only. Nice idea would be to have additional link below for download attached image (or inside mentioned box).

2. Advertisement

I've mentioned this once and will do that again: web buttons for DonationCoder.com might be excellent idea.

Many websites offer additional images to be placed in users' signatures, so DC should create the set of these for various parts or events.

3. FARR screenshots page

Navigation through all images is a pain for me now. Please consider better gallery mode (JS lytebox or something similar) which will not reload whole page.

1.0.3.0 is available.

Since now when there is no thumbnails, "No preview" row will be hidden by default. This feature is now connected with "Show empty/error nodes" option., so the only way to see it again is checking it.

There is also the possibility to see files icons too.
When there is no thumbnail, icon will be shown. This procedure will also resize row's height when needed.

OK. 1.0.3.1 with two changes ;)

Ehhh.... I was careless and forgot about enabling panels after drag'n'drop so 1.0.3.2 had to be published.

How does it look like without whole fancy-glassy Aero stuff? Is it possible to disable theming service?

You're paying for a possibility to gain knowledge from tech support and for making You realise how small You are ;)

PS. I could never get through instruction because:

1. I am always trying to avoid "Program Files" directory while installing stuff,
2. no "Recycle Bin" icon here (I've disabled this feature long time ago).

I would rather like to ask EA about "Should I create missing elements first?"...
898
Ehhh. "No install.wim" error during install.
899
is there a "built into Windows" solution available?
Nope but there are few shell extensions for seeing that in file's properties window (ex. http://beeblebrox.org/hashtab/ ).

Microsoft would have to release some kind of small "ISO checker" program that people could download to verify that the torrent is complete/legitimate after it's finished downloading.
Simple MD5 or SHA1 would be enough.
