There are only two different kind of people in the world. Those who love the iPod wheel control scheme and those who hate it.

This reminds me of the old gag:

There are three kinds of people in the world, those who can add and those who can't

2) Instead of running the application via the normal startup option set up a scheduled task to start the program at login and give the task admin rights. See http://blogs.techrep...ow-on-windows/?p=616 for details on how to do it it Vista - the same appraoch works in Windows 7.

Yes - this is what I have done and I no longer suffer UAC prompts on system start for SpellChecker or for Acronis something or other  :-[

Am I the only user who is NOT annoyed by UAC? Heck, even my wife uses her vista laptop and has not complained about UAC. She has even said UAC is helpful in that it can help prevent accidental deletion of a file she didn't intend to touch. UAC in Windows 7 is far from intrusive, in my opinion. Vista was overbearing at times with UAC but this was greatly improved in 7. The problem with UAC is that most application developers, even after a few years with Vista, have not realized what is throwing these UAC prompts and have not updated their applications. I have a feeling this will change with Win7, but one can only wonder why it hasn't happened sooner.
</rant>

Nope - doesn't bother me, either. I have not had an issue with it under Vista 32 bit, Vista 64 bit and now Windows 7.

Just curious.  Is it a multi-core PC?  I'm wondering if 7 does a better job of distributing processes among the cores at startup?

Well... Dual Core  ;D

I've noticed the disk activity light flashing fairly frequently as well since moving to Win7 but there's not audible disk thrashing going on and performance doesn't appear to be affected so I'm not sweating it.

Hmm.... I haven't had Archivarius installed in about 8 months, so maybe things have changed (or you've got a much bigger OST than I do), but using Direct Access it used to "rip"  ;D through updating my 400MB OST index in about a minute and a half. BTW, I agree about the Outlook being open vs closed issue - I finally went with NOT having scheduled indexing of my OST file and did it manually whenever I could remember to do so.

I wish the developer would implement COM indexing...

Armando - what OS are you currently running? As noted above, when I switched to Vista, I finally moved to WDS and haven't looked back.

For me the nice thing about the startup is that you get control of your system much earlier (even if it hasn't fully finished the startup process).

Yes - my experience is that Vista 64 and Win7 64 boot to the login prompt in about the same amount of time. The big difference, however, is that Win7 loads to a useable desktop in a few seconds whereas Vista and XP take quite a bit longer to do the same. The Vista/Win7 comparison are on the same machine.

1- it's VERY slow at indexing Outlook content and maybe some other DB. This is my biggest gripe. X1 does outlook indexing 100x better.

It's much quicker if you use "direct access" - via Custom Mails - than the default OLE access. It's quicker still if you make sure that Outlook is shutdown when you are indexing your OST. The developer has long promised implementing COM access (a la X1 and others) but this hasn't happened yet. I found this workaround to be quite acceptable.

If you want to use Archivarius for files and something else for mail, have you looked at MailStore Home? I actually use it to back up my mail, but it's an excellent search tool as well.

For myself, as noted, now that I'm on Windows 7 I just use WDS and have yet to have a problem. Caveat: haven't really had to find anything, though  ;D

Sunbelt has a Black Friday sale on today - VIPRE AV and AS is $9.95 single and $19.95 for home licenses.

http://www.vipreanti...rus.com/blackfriday/

Well worth it, in my opinion. The really nice thing is that if you have time remaining on a current subscription, you can buy now and apply the new license later and it will be good for a full 12 months from the date of activation

NOTE: the Purchase page at SoftMaker states the following, with respect to upgrade pricing for Office 2010 (my emphasis):

Upgrade to SoftMaker Office 2010 for Windows
Upgrade version. Only for owners of older versions of TextMaker, PlanMaker, SoftMaker Office, or Ashampoo Office.

So... if you bought Ashampoo Office 2006 or 2008, you're eligible for upgrade pricing on the next SoftMaker version

I"ve found the solution - avoid Apple products and Apple software like the plague! OK, admittedly, I do have an old iBook running OSX 10.4.11 but I don't use it for anything, really, other than to play around with Quicksilver every so often. On my Windows machines, though, APPLE free zones

I'm loving Windows 7, but increasingly I'm losing my "loyalty" to the 3rd party shareware that I have purchased over the years that has kept me on Windows.

To hop back in the thread a little bit...Darwin, I wish had a core set of apps which were OS-agnostic & were multi-platform then I wouldn't feel tied to Windows, but I'm tied to Windows because of the power of the apps...

It's probably much the same for Mac users when they discover Quicksilver. Nothing on any other platform can touch it.

I hear you - as noted, I've never tried the full Linux immersion experiement, but I have tried dual-boot setups a few times over the years (most recently about 18 months ago with XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.x). I am impressed by the power of Linux and the variety of software that is available for it, but have thus far not been moved to make the switch. My earlier posting reflected more an "itch" to try the experiment again and an optimism that more compelling FOSS Linux programs are available. Of course, when I posted that, I neglected to mention DOpus - File Management is what keeps me on Windows. I have a Mac, with Quicksilver, but find it hard to imagine switching to it if I can't take DOpus with me. Ditto for Linux. It's the lack of great file management options that have kept me away.

FWIW, I also have XYplorer and TC licenses and love them both as well. Of course, neither of them have Linux analogs, either  :(

The thing is if you don't really need a program to be 64-bit, then compiling it that way is just an academic exercise/waste.
... [snip] ...
None of my other software is 64 bit as there is just no (way to justify the memory usage waste) need for it.

Well there is the rarely seen processor efficiency. In theory x64 apps should run a bit faster as they can avail of more recent processor instructions which 32bit apps usually avoid to maintain backwards compatibility with older CPUs. Exactly how that manifests in day to day applications would be debatable.

Yes, and as noted in this thread, there are at least four of us on 64 bit that have seen negligible issues WRT 32 bit programs running under 64 bit OS's. That is, the often quoted "issue" of 32 bit programs running more slowly under a 64 bit OS.

General Software Discussion / Re: Which MP3 tagger do you use?
« Last post by Darwin on November 19, 2009, 06:04 PM »
For a specific example, this is especially useful for those who used MusicMatch back at the height of its popularity. MusicMatch used a LOT of custom tags that no other tagging program uses. Loading up these files in mp3tag will allow you to nuke those relics from the past with impunity.

This is good to know! I used MusicMatch for a number of years.

BTW I won't be updating to Office 2010 - I updated from 2006 to 2008 anticipating that Database would be included in the suite and here we are two or three years later and the database still hasn't made it to public beta! So... I'll be waiting for Database to be released first...

My understanding is that the Ashampoo product can be updated by downloading the SoftMaker updaters, no?
I am no longer certain;

I might now remember that every time I noticed that SoftMaker Office had been updated, I would click the Ashampoo-licensed Softmaker Office "update" button and get the message from Ashampoo > you already have the newest <, and that this went on for years until I finally lost my patience and purchased a license for SoftMaker's SoftMaker...
Was this how it was? I think it was.

Hmm... wish I could remember where I read that the updaters for SoftMaker Office work for the Ashampoo OEM version. I *think* tomos might have written about this at some point.

Anyone with Ashampoo Office installed willing to give this a go? That is, try updating your install via the updaters service packs downloadable from the SoftMaker website (http://www.softmaker...sh/servpack_en.htm)?

mwb1100 beat me to it!

Hold on, I'm not familiar about this, can you clarify?  What is the myth?  That 32-bit applications suffer in performance in 64-bit OS?  Or that the difference in performance in general for 64-bit OS's is negligible relative to 32-bit?  Because I was considering moving to Windows 7 64-bit and taking advantage of the additional RAM.

The myth is that 32 bit programs run slower under 64 bit OS's. As you can see, three of us have not really seen that in real world usage (bar f0dder's Foxit Reader example).

Have now owned an HP-33s for a couple of months - it's a nicer little calculator than I expected. However, the 35s DOES allow you to edit and re-use equations typed in while in ALG mode - this addresses one of Superboyac's criticisms of the 33s, which doesn't allow you to do this...

I also have a 48gx now - awesome grapher but SLOW!

I haven't seen any recent benchmarks actually showing *any* performance hit from 32 bit apps on 64 bit OS.

I'm more or less going on "hearsay" - the latest Windows Secrets newsletter discusses the pros and cons of 32 bit vs 64 bit and this is one of the things that they mention. I honestly didn't notice a difference when I made the move, even though most of my software is 32 bit.

EDITED for clarity  :-[

I saw this and already bookmarked it, but that doesn't give me my classic taskbar back, does it?

Er, no! However, one tip I've seen is:

Quick Launch is still available, but it's hidden by default. You have to know where to look:

C:\ Users \ username \ AppData \ Roaming \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Quick Launch

"Simply create a new toolbar and point to this location. You'll have to enable 'show hidden files' to find it."

I'm actually moving full-time linux. But win7/w2008 was ok.

I'm loving Windows 7, but increasingly I'm losing my "loyalty" to the 3rd party shareware that I have purchased over the years that has kept me on Windows. For example, when I moved from XP to Vista, I simply didn't re-install a bunch of shareware that I've purchased over the years. Similarly, moving to Windows 7, I uninstalled a lot of shareware that I wasn't really using. This leaves me, essentially, with Office 2007, my AV/AS app, some text editors, and my PDF suite to "worry" about. Not sure that I care that much anymore... Maybe it's time to do as I have long threatened and re-purpose my Win2k or XP machine as a Linux box and see how I get on...

Anyway, good luck!
