who can speak Chinese?
-final_poseidon (April 25, 2006, 08:07 AM)
The Chinese I guess 8)
877
Perhaps the new install of farstone simply fixed some associations
Well, I could ask the coder, but since I installed 4 beta versions of 2.5 before installing the final versions I highly doubt that...

or other registry deep black magic? :)
or that :D

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Change Windows' Winver Banner
« Last post by brotherS on April 25, 2006, 05:06 AM »
No, I mean the Winver banner, type Run->Winver to see what I mean.
Oh, i didn't know about that one! But why would you want to change that dialog. You're risking messing something up, i guess a pretty strong reason would be needed to do that.
Like you, jgpaiva, I never used that command. Never ever. Not once. Why would anyone would want to skin/mod such a well-hidden window?  :D

Edit 2: That "disables itself" problems happens often directly after the dimming, so it might not *only* be the optical mouse alone...
Just happened again (in 2.0) just now... :(

I hereby dub Marc Echo the Global Community Daily Village Idiot.
Your failure of using Ctrl-C will echo across the centuries: his name is Marc Ecko.

the vatican might be interested in hearing about the codec miracle. it's about time we had a confirmed digital miracle.
;D ;D

On FastStone's site, they list this among recent improvements:

Version 2.4    (Mar 15, 2006)
    * Video files ( AVI, MPG, MPEG, WMV, MOV) can be displayed as thumbnails in the browser. Double clicking on a video file will open it in the default media player (Screenshot)

So maybe that's where you got the codec!
No, the version I was installing was 2.5 and I also had installed 2.5 beta versions before. FIV installs no codecs, it just allows access to them in the viewer.

Thanks for the prompt to update my Faststone - off to download it now...
You didn't add it to your list of programs at http://fileforum.betanews.com/ so you didn't get a free email for every available update?

Shame on you! :D

i'm beginning to sound like brotherS. ;)
;D

You just discovered what's great!

:) Just uploaded DimSaver v2.0!

Added option to change the background color and to display an image.

brotherS, do you run another screensaver after dimming?
No, I don't. I let Windows switch off the monitor after some time, which not always happens because DimSaver disables itself.

Thanks for 2.0, I'll see if I can find a background color that's useful :)

Office 2.0

Is it possible to run your office completely with Web applications? Yes it is! IT|Redux has some great resources to get you started, including a killer database of Office 2.0 Web applications.

you probably installed some software that installed the proper codec.  some media program.
No way! It still didn't work 2 days ago, and all that I installed since then were updates of Mp3tag and FastStone Image Viewer...

Oh happy day!

After one of my apps started misbehaving last week for no apparent reason  my long term problem with Windows Media video (I hate that format anyway) files fixed itself today!

Maybe a year ago Zoom Player suddenly stopped playing those (even the crappy Windows Media Player didn't play them anymore), and since I couldn't find a fix for that problem I started to use the VLC media player for those files (if I have to, I don't like that format at all!). Today I accidently tried to play a .wmv file in Zoom Player - and it suddenly worked again!

I have *NO* idea why this happened, but hope it will stay this way now :D
887
:tellme: brotherS, it does ignore mouse movement within the default drag rectangle defined in Windows.
What about my "Edit 2" line? Any idea about how to track that bug down?
888
DimSaver does sometimes disable itself here - did anyone else experience that too?

Edit: Maybe that's because I'm using an optical mouse where the cursor could move a pixel or two without me touching it. I have no way of being 100% sure that that's the reason, but saw that before. It should help if you would compensate for that by ignoring any mouse movement of 5 pixels or less.

Edit 2: That "disables itself" problems happens often directly after the dimming, so it might not *only* be the optical mouse alone...
889
Sounds awesome, thanks!!  :D

Hi,

I think we have a few wget (http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/ / http://www.interlog....charron/wgetwin.html) users here?

How do I get it to download a html page without killing all the non-letter characters?
891
Thanks! :)

Now if only you could find a way to avoid AHK not finding "WinWaitActive" windows when the dimmer is active... PowerDimmer would be perfect+++!  :-*

Wouldn't it be nice if you always knew the order of the items in the Windows Taskbar?
I'm using a vertical taskbar at the left side of my desktop (which has several benefits) and like the standard that Windows 2000 offers here: the oldest ones at the top, the newest at the bottom.

I also tend to remember what I have opened. :) I thought about using a tool for hiding tray icons though... with 20+ icons it DOES become cluttered :D Still need to find something that's 100% bugfree for Windows 2000 though...

Welcome, RedCat71!

I often go past the one I want and have to cycle through all over again.

Note Alt+Shift+Tab moves backward through the list.
-noth(a)nk.you (April 21, 2006, 12:02 PM)
Yes, Shift always works as the 'additional qualifier'. I use it all day long, not only with Alt+TAB but also with just TAB or Pos1/Home or End. Very helpful!

(Even so, I too usually cycle through again :-[)

I've always bought the cheapest I could find, with any media.
Thou should not do that if thou want to restore the data :D

I have had a slightly odd problem with DimSaver active in that my Explorer windows seem to refresh regularly. It stops when I change to a different screen saver. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just my screwed up system?
-Carol Haynes (April 21, 2006, 05:10 AM)
Your system must really be FUBAR  :'( - that never happened here!
898
Hi skrommel,

one more suggestion: add a "move cursor to posX/posY when dimming" option

DimSaver often dims the screen correctly but when some program opens/closed/moves a window while dimmed and the cursor happens to rests on the taskbar the desktop stays dimmed but the taskbar becomes non-dimmed...
899
IMHO such tools do not replace a file manager (and vice versa). What's great about WinDirStat is that you can see not only how big folders are but also if that's caused by a few big files or lots of small files - with one glance!

Personal web logs where people talk about their feelings and if they had oatmeal for breakfast make me want to puke.  :o

I can see the benefit of the web log format for some people who have an audience... sort of a more frequently updated, less formal newsletter.  That makes sense.
True :)

I hate the short speak name 'blog.  Are we too lazy to speak full words now?
Don't be sad, people just want it short and handy: blog, torrent, mobile, PC, CNN, HIV, USA, DC :)
