General Software Discussion / weather.com
« Last post by cmpm on July 15, 2010, 08:57 PM »
weather.com has changed their website

For anyone interested.
It's flagged as beta, but a much cleaner look.

They are still pushing the tray app download,
but I am not interested in that or any other weather tray deal.
I just click the website for my weather.

another alternative

http://www.poppeeper.com/

can connect and download the yahoomail free account messages
then use the forwarding in poppeeper

Anyway, isn't cloud computing working with files on your computer already?
If not I'd certainly keep copies of everything committed to the cloud.

But then the collaboration issue.........
If the cloud could be mounted and real time synced to your pc,
that might work.

http://www.gladinet.com/

That's about all I could find, but not free it seems.

Windows live is doing some stuff I don't understand yet.

General Software Discussion / Re: PC Monitoring - Need Help
« Last post by cmpm on July 11, 2010, 06:48 AM »
Obviously either/or the parent and/or the child is not ready for this '12 year old' to use the net.

I agree with 40hz.

With my kids, as soon as they could reach the keyboard they were using the computers.

I had them using the computer in the family room, till I felt they were ready to have one in their own room.  And sure I'm aware they surfed some porn and cursed, but we talked about those and other subjects regarding the net.

It is a responsibility whether you are a child or parent or anyone.

So there is no need to yell here, arshadbh, to be heard.

And responsible parenting does not stop when the child turns 18, or any age.

Just think of what would happen if this child found out you have been monitoring the child's net usage behind her back for 6 years. Are you going to ask for software that monitors who and what is talked about at school next? I work at a school, and I assure you the net has nothing kids are not saying in person to person 'chats'.

Printing the emails to pdf then storing them might help.
You can usually tag a pdf from the printer.
And add additional info.

I'd also consider a live sky drive account (free 25gb) as the destination for the pdf's upon creation.
Everyone concerned needs the login details of that one skydrive account.
That would be your privacy concerns I think.

This is advice is from me though.
I'm really not sure what you want to accomplish.
Or halfof what you are talking about.

But if upon receipt of emails concerned,
they could be auto printed to pdf and saved to the skydrive.
Setting rules and coming up with a script I suppose.

I don't think I burned it correctly, MilesAhead.
I did the Linux cd and not the PE files.

Here is what i haven't burned to a cd.
Is this what I'm supposed to burn to a cd?
All of it or just the Files folder?
The files folder is the one in the Macrium Screenshot.

Aesthetics would explain the feel of a web site, or anywhere really.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesthetics

Aesthetically pleasing for a particular feel of a library like atmosphere.
Or similar.

http://www.google.co...mp;oe=utf-8&aq=t

Or use a thesaurus to get another word to search, to find more.

Hope you find what you have in mind.

The price drop could be due to an upcoming release.
Which usually happens like this.

But it also could be because of the ipad.

I'm not sure of why the price drop.
But I am sure there is a substantial reason.
What that reason is, I can only guess I guess.

I just tested Macrium's free version and it worked to restore the backup.

The boot cd didn't work for some reason.
But I have a dual boot system with XP and 7.
Installed the free version on both systems.

I couldn't restore the W7 backup from within W7,
without the cd that did not work,
but I could from within XP.

So booting into XP I was able to Restore my W7 system fully.
To be sure I got the full restore and that it worked,
I formatted (erased all data) in the W7 partition first from within XP,
then restored the image using XP,
from my usb drive to that original partition for W7.

Speaking of just what the doctor ordered.
A ton of this technology is in health care.
I think that would be a concern of a collapse or crazy intrusion by developers.
Propriety software may become the rule for that business if developers screw up with their programs in the health industry.

Just thinking out load.

The possibility of an OS embedded in the mind is not too far fetched....maybe...lol...

A holographic desktop by blinking your eye a certain way.
Not sure about a mouse and keyboard, maybe just voice recognition....

Like I said, just thinking.
As far fetched as it may sound it could happen.

General Software Discussion / Synergy Plus
« Last post by cmpm on June 24, 2010, 08:54 PM »
Anyone tried any of these?

http://code.google.c...-plus/downloads/list

The claim is better with W7 and Vista, but the original works fine still.

http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

Seems google is messing around with it.
But they are beta and rc's, and say unstable for all it looks like.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with them.

Or is there something better and still free to use?

887
Had to upgrade the sound drivers and software manually.
Originally this gateway 840GM used Intel audio with the missing sonic drivers warning.
Auto update will auto update the codec to 'IDT' on XP, but not a full install of the software and drivers for some reason.

No install at all for W7, but I found the full download for W7 and XP here.

http://download.cnet...0-2110_4-169457.html

For XP it works normally and places a tray icon in the tray.
Upgrading the use of all jacks on the computer.
With our without this upgrade you can here sound but the jack configuratio is not accessible.

For W7 it works normally, but there is a splash screen that stays up when restarted or rebooted with it's control panel. Disable IDT in msconfig so that the program interface doesn't pop up and stay there. No icon in the tray, but it can be accessed via control panel in windows 7 with access to front and rear jack settings and more.
Otherwise, there is no sound at all for W7 for this particular computer without this IDT codec update.

888
Progress update-

Looks like the bios update is what was needed.
Got lost in Intel's site, so I'll let W7 figure it out.
No blue Screens, still 3gb usable memory.
Thanks to all and especially Carol.
(btw, what did you use to adjust my uploaded pics for better viewing in that post, Carol)

Dual booting right now with XP and W7, plus a backup of XP.
I haven't checked everything yet as it is still updating.
I just loaded it earlier today and I know there will be some more updates, before I start loading what I want on W7.
I expect I'll go back to full W7 again, not sure, XP doesn't take much room but still needs to be booted into from time to time to keep it updated.

Thanks again,
Clay
890
Bios update worked! Easier then I thought, thanks.
It actually flashed it twice cause it was so old,
and stated that may happen in the instructions,
which I followed.

The other computer I flashed, I had to from the 3.5 disk.
Yeah a long time ago.
It's been while and I couldn't remember if it kept the OS, which it did.
Still reading only 3gb memory, but normal, right?

Not ready to do W7 yet, I think I'll make a full backup first.
So I don't have to start from scratch again for XP if needed.
891
Thanks, maybe I can do it in the near future.
A weekend or more...lol.
Not after work during the week though.
Need time without certain limits to work on it.

Will my current XP operating system stay intact?

I do appreciate the links and help.
Good incentive to update.
892
Thanks for the replies and help.
I have considered updating the bios.
I've done it once on anther machine successfully.

Here's what I'm looking at from gateway support.
Which doesn't seem updated enough.

This is after input of my computer serial number,
and scanning current configuration, with available downloads.
So these are for this Computer.

[Edit - just to make the images easily viewable in the post. Carol]

893
Probably needs a bios update, yes.
I'm not confident to do it though.
The chances of turning it into a door stop.

what does this mean?

In particular make sure your memory settings are conservative.

Something about the memory mhz or overclocking?
Used the same type of memory/mhz it came with.

edit-gotta go to work ttyl
894
Yes Carol, I hear ya.
Investigated all that the best I could.
The thing is it worked fine with only 2gb of memory, but when you go over that, it throws a hissy.
I have 512 nvidia 8600 graphics card.

It just seems a bit crazy, all that mapping stuff, to me anyway.
When the card has it's own memory....

I read another thread on it here at DC and a bunch of other sites.

edit-

Since this is a W7 upgrade disk, it will not activate or even install fully unless I have XP up and running.
So I have to install XP first then upgrade to W7 if I want to try.
XP is on right now, and it takes a while, like 2 days to get it fully loaded.
A 2005 disk needs a lot of updates and removing the ton of included extra programs.
The darn thing has norton, mcafee, aol and some other unwanted, not needed, outdated stuff.
895
Thanks, yeah I think I'll try.
I got it at a school discount, but that should not matter.

I have to get over my general hatred of the whole mess to speak to them first.
Damned, if they didn't do this on purpose, it was a major screw-up.

I'm back on XP and this is a media center as well, so I don't know....
W7 had trouble with my tv tuner card (ati), working for a bit then loosing the tuner's signal.
Works fine with XP media center installed, glad I had called for that disk long ago.

Seems the W7 disk is an enterprise update disk.
Printed on the disk is "Licensed for use only by Students and Staff"
Sounds plural to me.
I have it on my laptop as well, so I don't feel I've wasted my money....sorta...:)
896
Well, for me it's 4 new sticks 1gb each replacing 2 bad sticks 1gb each.
Ran memtest from memtest86 and W7's memdiag. on the first two to find they were bad.
So I upgraded to this computers max of 4gb.
Came out clean with both mem testers.
But I was still getting blue screens,
sometimes at startup and sometimes after everything was loaded in W7.

BothXP Pro and W7 would only show 3gb usable, while showing I did indeed have 4gb of mem.
Some limitation with 32bit.
ACPI is on in the bios in the setup default as well.

XP is not blue screening while W7 did.
Same Memory-4gb.

If I could do it over I would have bought the W7 64 to read all my memory.
But I don't know if that would blue screen either, cause I haven't tried it....yet.

edit-Don't think I will either
this computer I've had since 2005.
897
W7 blue screened when I went to 4gb memory.
It will only read 3gb on this machine anyway.
So pull a gig of memory and test it.
Or 2 just to see if that's the problem.

The 32 bit W7 doesn't like 4gb memory on this computer.

Living Room / Re: The proper word is “dependent,” not addicted.
« Last post by cmpm on June 18, 2010, 02:20 PM »
Thanks 40hz, although I didn't want to get to deep into the term addiction, I can address some questions about it.

For me to think of someone as being an addict, there has to be an element of personal choice or volition. It could be no more than somebody's decision not to care. Or possibly the decision to not make a decision by allowing certain life events to chart their own course. But there always has to be some volition, no matter how slight, somewhere in the mix.

This is true to point, and differs with the individual.
Lots of factors here, I know.

There comes a time when one must decide on priorities.
Knowingly choosing an addiction happens I'm sure.
That's easy, if the substance is readily available.

Choosing to stop an addiction is easy too, the follow through is the hard part.

For the most part an addiction will be realized after becoming addicted.
Help from others is needed most of the time imho, to break an addiction.
Even after a decision to stop it. It's not easy, because of the nature of it's backlash.
Being honest with one's own decision and those that help are key.

"an element of personal choice or volition"

Yeah, at first......
till the substance addiction is more powerful then the will to choose,
because it defeats the will to fight it,
till there is sufficient reason/s or reasoning to stop.

Is it possible for those endorphins to permanently stop? That would seem like permanent damage, and permanent addiction?

Although they can stop during withdrawal it is not permanent damage.
Though the memory of such addiction must be dealt with as well.

The question is, can one function without the "substance",
as you mentioned sex, gambling, sports, thrill seekers, etc....are substances.
Another question would be can you stop at will,
and still be able to function in other aspects of your life normally.

Alcohol is probably a good example of addiction when abused.
It is deadly, not only if used too much, but can kill in withdrawal.

In another light and respect for those who need synthetic or natural substitutes-
Dependent would be if you need something your body or mind cannot produce on it's own.

Living Room / Re: The proper word is “dependent,” not addicted.

I understand the difference between addiction and being dependent.
And I don't want to be long winded or harsh on this subject.
Or a distraction from the point.

But this article does not describe addiction as it is in reality.

Addiction is associated with individual choice to smoke, drink, and take drugs. It connotes personal weakness.

Addiction does not connote personal weakness.
If personal weakness is saying there is a flaw, by choice or design, in the person.

Addiction is prolonged, habitual use of synthetic or natural substance to attain a certain state of mind or body. That which the mind and body can achieve on it's own is replaced by these other substances for a period of time long enough to kill the normal naturally occurring effect.

When the only way to achieve the desired state of mind or body is by way of these synthetic or natural substances, the body and mind becomes addicted to these and the effects are not produced without them. They can't be, because these effects or feelings or state have been replaced habitually until the body and mind cannot do it by themselves anymore without the substance that has taken the power from the normal naturally occurring effects.

And this isn't Wikipedia but what I know by personal experience as well as searching and finding the answers to why something else took the power of my own control over certain desired results and unexpected affects in every aspect of my life.

If the substitutes are stopped for a long enough period of time the body and mind will respond eventually. It is designed to heal itself. And the naturally occurring effects will return to the normal naturally occurring effects.

-in other words, for example and quite real

If investigated one will find that the natural firing of endorphins is normal and can be achieved without substances to trigger them. Continual use and over use of substitutes will kill or stop these natural endorphins from occurring, and will not work with out stimulation from the substances. Withdrawal will occur when stopped. Leaving the person powerless to stop the addiction.

Until Intervention by one's own will to regain control, the addiction continues.

If there is any weakness in addiction it's in the failure to recognize it for what it is.

---------------

Anyway.......yes I would miss my computer but I could still function. :)
