And no bastard I've ever met thinks he's the only bastard in the room.

Just found this ... too little time <sigh /> .  That one should go in the quotable quotes book, Website, whatever.  A most cogent observation, and applicable to most every political type I've ever met  :P.  (Also to most business execs/supervisors, but I won't go there - that'd require reams if in print, and way too many pages as a forum comment   ;D.)

Yeah ... well ... scrutinize is not something she does well ... unless it's some guy wherever she happens to be.  She's young, nubile, impressionable - a fair hand at a PC, but her interests ... wander, shall we say?

She has a backup system, some off the wall thing.  However, my own experience with backups started in the early DOS days.  Don't recall if it was 2.1 or 3.0 that had a backup system that worked.  Well, the backup worked just fine.  Problem was with the restore, as it didn't.

Funny thing, I've used a number of backup systems over the years, and restore has always been the problem.  And some of these were well-written, acclaimed, commercial, industrial systems.  That failed to restore.  Can't count the number of times I've backed up, re-everythinged - format, partition, install - and had the restore fail because the hardware was not the same configuration as it used to be.

Right now I'm using Syncless and SyncBackSE, neither of which I'd trust with my life, nor even with my gonads.  There're also a few images floating around, but experience has led to trust of none of them.

Frankly, I'm not convinced that a true backup is possible or practicable.

However, that aside, my young lady has:
  • backed up her system
  • reinstalled Win7
  • suffered no apparent losses

She thanks you very much for such an expeditious resolution to her issues.

(Yeah, I know that's fast, but she has a gaming-capable system, one which I envy very much.  Sometimes it'll do things faster than I can thimk :P of 'em  ;).)

Milady Haynes,

You are a lifesaver

1st problem doesn't exist - it's a straight DVD, direct from MS, install, no OEM stupidities to deal with.

2nd item could be problematic, but that's always a tossup.  At least, she'll likely keep most of what she's got - and in some cases cannot replace, due to defunct providers, ancient versions to which she's attached, and the like.  Pointed her to a few old version Websites, but they don't keep everything (damn it!)

BTW, the article you quoted was exactly the one I was seeking ... I'll pretty much trust Fred on most anything he has to say ... been followin' 'im fer years  :P

'Preciate the comeback   .

General Software Discussion / Windows 7 reinstall article ... lost?
« Last post by barney on July 20, 2011, 07:17 PM »
Folk,

Recently I was about to read an article (Google RSS feeds) about Windows 7 reinstall.  The title implied reinstallation w/o loss of data or installed software.  Unfortunately, I was called away before I could read or save it, and I failed to mark it as unread.

I've searched the RSS feeds, as well as checked the PC World site - which I thought was its point of origin - to no avail.  Anyone, perhaps, have a reference to it?  Have a friend I consider in need of a reinstall, but she's adamant that she is unwilling to lose her current configuration or application installations.  I'd like to be able to point her to this article, but I simply cannot find it .

Anyone have a pointer to it?  Please?

Finished Programs / Re: when I downlaod files.

Tastes  vary, of course, but for me - the 1.9 version, I think - a little bit of setup and it gives me all the automation I want as well as override freedom.  As I recall, I looked at later version(s) - 3.x, maybe? - but didn't like.  The older, unenhanced version works just fine for me.

I've been using FlashGet for years.  It incorporates with Firefox, IE, not certain about Opera, Safari, or Chrome.

It allows me to establish preset destinations, but also to change destination on the fly.  It also keeps a database of what files went where.

You'd have to add the FlashGot extension to Firefox, but that's fairly simple, low memory footprint.

One thing of which you should be aware - depending upon how it is configured, it will also add a text file for each download with the same name as the download, which I like, but that is easily adjusted in the configuration.

Might give it a look.  Low learning curve, loads automatically, pretty much a no-brainer to use.  Couple of extra clicks, but well worth it for the value it provides.

[Edit:  I don't like the dialog extenders because they tend to be too limiting, but they do work.]

Living Room / Warning, rant: CodeLobster...support?
« Last post by barney on July 18, 2011, 10:05 PM »
<rant>Got interested in a BDJ offer for CodeLobster (CL) for PHP.  I've looked at it in the past, but could never see my way clear to the outlay for what I could see from the free version.  However, it seems as though I just dropped ~%50 for the free version - with a 30-day time limit!

Got the registration code, downloaded the latest version, installed.  Nothing abnormal - so far!

Entered the appropriate registration information as it was sent to me.  CL said all was good, that I should reboot for the software to recognize the registration:  I did, it didn't.  Tried this several times - Einsteinians, belay comment.  Made a comment to the BDJ on the problem.  'Twas 'splained to me that I must do it properly.  I had.

Then I contacted CL directly.  Same response.  I had clearly stated the steps I took, step by step, quoting the source(s) of the registration code I was using.  First response, don't use the free registration code.  Second response - none!

Somehow, I have trouble putting trust in software when the so-called help facility responds in such a fashion.  Maybe it's just me, but if their help facility is that unresponsive - and apparently unable to read a fairly simple email - how much trust can I put into the product?</rant>

Living Room / Re: Anyone here using a standing desk?
« Last post by barney on July 18, 2011, 01:27 PM »
I've used a standing hydraulic table for ~7 months now. I do 70% standing, switching back and forth to sitting when I feel like it. I would not change my setup for anything in the world.

Now that seems practical.  Just out of curiosity, where did you obtain the table?  That might work will for this decrepit wreck that houses whatever is me  :-\, but most all of what I've seen is industrial, usually heavy duty and heavy price.

The long periods of standing just allow the damage caused by the valve failure to happen quicker

???

Sounds like a circular argument to me.  Or, perhaps more correctly, a specious one.  It still says that you'll get varicose more quickly by standing because of bad valves, and states prior to that, that the valves, at lest on the tested group (all female ) failed early on in their life.

Standing may not cause the problem, but is acknowledged to accelerate it.

That's like saying someone is obese because of a medical condition, not because of dietary excess ... either way, they're still fat  :tellme: :P.

A telling point, sirrah!  I'm in that borderline country between the one (1) and the other two (2) (of your "1 in 3 Americans is obese" statement.  I.E., not fat, not trim, but definitely overweight  :-[.  Had a mail shop supervisor many years agone who was obese before it became trendy ... his ankles killed him  :)!  No way he could have used a standing desk.  Some days 'twas all he could to to walk from the entrance to his desk.  Someone in that shape - very round - is not gonna do well at a standing desk.  On the other hand, in that same mail shop, there was an admin, maybe five (5) feet tall, about 110 pounds, give or take five (5), who was just too plain damned lazy to stand at a desk, although she'd not have had a [known physical] problem doing it.

Methinks the standing desk advocates are more prone to advertising implying their physical prowess than they would have us believe, but, then, what do I know  :P?

I installed the trial for AnySQL Maestro, but it doesn't want to talk to MySQL, at least not natively, and its connection wizard would be right at home in Id  :P.

Then pulled down & installed MySQL Maestro, but haven't had much time to play with it.

Is this stuff worth the time to evaluate?  Been using the community edition of SQLyog for most MySQL stuff, but I'm not really wild about it - it is functional, but that's about it.

Basically, I'd like to find something that will let me construct tables, then build and test queries against them.  PHP can troubleshoot a lot of stuff, with appropriate echo or print lines scattered through the code, but that can get pretty cumbersome, 'specially when it comes time to clean up the script.  phpMyAdmin serves well for some stuff, but it's lacking in several areas when troubleshooting time arrives.

Living Room / Re: Dumb backup method - lost several years of notes

Oy, vey!

Recently went through something similar, so sympathy (same pain) can truly be offered  :'(.

Recalls the old days of DOS, 2.x methinks, where the backup worked perfectly, but the restore was a flop  ;D.

If you - or anyone, for that matter - come up with a foolproof system, please publish it - this fool would be very interested  :P.
888
Thanks, Curt,

It's always nice to have sources .

Tried Soluto, but it wasn't particularly happy on the box where I installed it .

I did find the registry key I was seeking:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.VerboseStatus - VerboseStatus had to be added as a DWORD - value 1 shows status, 0 does not.

This doesn't show actual boot status,i.e., before login, but shows more detail after login.  Dunno that it's all that useful, but it is kinda nice to know why so much time elapses between password entry and application load start ;D.  And it has shown me update hangs a couple of times, so I at least had a starting point for problem resolution.
890
Never mind, I found it.
891
That would be the little beastie  ... 'twas hiding from me :P.

Now, how do I show this as resolved in the title - or can that not be done from the Quick Reply window?
892
Recently - gee, I'm getting repetitive  :P - used a software that allowed me to cause dialogues of a certain [maximum] size to be displayed on the currently active monitor.  And I've lost that one, as well.

'Twas a TSR that allowed me to specify width and height in pixels.  Then any dialogue window that size or smaller would appear on the monitor where the cursor currently resided.  Think I found it on DC, but cannot find it again.  It may be part of another application, but not certain on that.

Anyone familiar with it?

(These memory lapses of late are getting ver-r-ry frustrating  :o.)
893
I recently encountered a registry change that will allow Windows - 7 only? not certain - to display loading information on the boot screen.  It's installed on one of the Win7 laptops.  Now I wish to install in on another laptop and on the desktop box.  But I cannot seem to find it again.  Seems as though it'd be easy enough to research - problem is too much data returned.  Anyone know of it?
894
ZenOK looks decent, but I bought into CrashPlan  earlier in this thread.  It has been exemplary for my needs to date, although it's always nice to have alternatives available  ;).
895
Yeah, you might have been lucky ... I had to lose significant data in order to jump that particular ship.  I stayed with it because I'd not been able to find anything that could perform searches as rapidly ... but this last version broke most of my search configs, as well as adding that damned ribbon and providing a toolbar that could not hold configurations ... ended up with less screen real estate, less functionality, and an ersatz menu [substitution] system that was non-intuitive (at least to me) at best.  So now it seems I'll be using URP for some stuff, WikeNotes for some stuff, Personal Brain for some stuff, maybe Compendium for some stuff ... wonder how many other pieces I'll need to adopt to compensate  :P.  Hell, I'd even go back to the Tornado TSR  :P.
896
He-he ... pulled down Compendium ... from first reads, I'll need a doctorate - at least a masters  ;) - just to get started.  Actually, it looks pretty decent, but it'll take a lot of reading to get it working, methinks  :P
897
The only thing I really miss is automated title and source url.

Try skydrive
http://cid-1a3b396d6...rowse.aspx/wikenotes

I've had no problem with downloads from your site.  My reference was to automating the import of URL and auto-titleing during drag/drop or paste.  Autosave would be kinda nice as well  :).  There are a few other elements that would - in my opinion - greatly enhance the utility  :P, but I guess that's for another time.
898
Funny, I've not had a problem with WikeNotes anent dropping web stuff onto it and holding them.  However, if you tried the latest version - 0.4 - you do have to pick the right create icon - one of 'em is text only.

I have had a few sites render as though I'd hit the view source button on the browser, but I suspect - since I've seen the same with other products - it's likely do to malformed Web pages rather some fault with WikeNotes.

Yeah, can't argue with the kludgy aspect.  Suspect, if the devs keep on it, that will improve with time, though.

I've yet, except as noted in the previous view source comment, to lose any data with it.  I'm not particularly happy with the password aspect - it seems poorly, or perhaps clumsily?, implemented - but I've lost no data for the last several weeks, actually since this thread started, which is more than I can say for URP.

All in all, it seems the best candidate to replace IS functionality in this arena, albeit not a total replacement.

BTW, looked at the TreeProjects app.  It's nice, and has tagging capability - a strong plus for me - but didn't see any graphic copy/storage capability worth mention.

899
TreeProjects looks good.  Even has the tagging capability I'd hoped IS would adopt.  Dunno from a cursory read whether it'll do graphics or not - WikeNotes has indeed spoiled me in that respect - but I'll check out the trial copy, see what it does.  At half the price, if it even comes close to IS' [former] functionality, it'll be a bargain  :).
900
Used Tomboy as a cataloging tool under linux, but [that iteration] wasn't really suitable to current requirements.  The current Windows version seems to have gone a bit too minimalist, although it might be a useful note[only]-taking app.

I'll take a look at AgendaAtOnce.  Currently getting more comfortable with WikeNotes.  It seems to be the most workable of everything I've tried so far, although they've not answered their help form.  I'd had high hopes for UltraRecall Pro, but I don't have the time to translate its help file into non-developer-level English  :P.
