Mini Newsletter for Mar 24, 2020
"Codename: Coronavirus Lockdown"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings all.  As you know, the entire planet is currently dealing with a serious crisis -- a worldwide virus pandemic that is overloading hospitals and causing severe damage to entire economies.

I'm writing to you from Champaign, Illinois, in the United States, which has only just begun to see cases reported.  We are under a state-wide stay-at-home order, with more of the country expected to follow suit soon.  Many other countries are further along in the trajectory of infection and are struggling to figure out how to handle it.

I have been finding it hard lately to focused on being positive and productive.  I find myself feeling overloaded and anxious.  I don't know if any of you are having the same problem.

I do know that in times like these, there is some value in being able to share our thoughts, encourage each other, and maintain some sense of normality and community.

With that goal in mind, I thought I would send out a short newsletter sooner rather than later.

For the overwhelming majority of you, this email/newsletter will be of no interest to you, and you can safely stop reading now; we're not asking for any money, nor do we have any money to give out.

However, for any of you who have a little room in your life right now, who would benefit from some positive distraction, I'd like to invite you to make yourself at home on our forum and share a bit of your life with us.  We are a friendly bunch.

I've released a couple of very minor updates to my software since the last newsletter in January, plus a MAJOR alpha-version update to one of them, and a new small Android app.

3. Feel Good Favorites

I thought this would be a good occasion to highlight some of the longest running, feel good threads on our forum, and invite you to post in them.

Just a reminder that this is how I painted my 3d Cody:
codyaward1.jpg

So if you want to paint yours instead of leaving it gold, you'll need some White, Black, and Yellow paint.
And then I used black oil paint marker to go over the raised text on the coin to make it stand out a little more.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: major problem on boot
« Last post by mouser on March 23, 2020, 10:55 PM »
when you use the LBC backup function it renames the files to have a .bak extension, so it's not like it will automatically load those.
so just copy over the most recent .ini,.mcp, and .mcf files.

Maybe just past the text in a quote in your post instead of attaching it as a download.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: major problem on boot

It sounds like LBC is not loading your actual launchbar file.

LBC uses a couple of different files to store your data.  Let's look at how they work:

LaunchBarCommander.ini - stores some very basic options (but not any data for any launchbars or what nodes/buttons are on them).
LaunchBarCommander.mcp - this stores basically the main options of the program and which launchbar files are loaded (but again not the actual launchbar button node data)

Then you have the actual launch bar files which end in extension .MCF
These are the main files that hold your buttons and menus.

It's an unusual separation of data and it can lead to some confusion.

So in your case it must be that the program is not loading the .mcf file with your actual nodes.
When people experience this they sometimes think they have lost their data, but it's probably just that it's not loading the .mcf file (or that you failed to copy that file).
It may just need you to, from LBC, load the .mcf file.  After you exit it should remember for next time that it should load that .mcf file with your nodes/buttons, etc.

Just uploaded new beta with fix for this.

One of the most helpful things I've done is have group chat windows with my friends (dc and real life), so we can kvetch and joke and plan and comfort and worry together.
There are lots of different tools for this.. The DC web chat for dc folks, and google hangouts for my real life friends, etc.  I know some people use facebook messenger, etc.
So now might be a good time to get your family and friends set up with one of these tools if they aren't already.

since we're going down the rabbit hole anyway

Are we not at the bottom of it yet? :tellme:

And a reminder, under the Help menu at top right is "Live Chat" item which will bring you to the donationcoder text-based irc-based chat room, where there are usually a couple of people hanging out shooting the breeze.
Lots of downtime and minimal talking most of the time, so feel free to just join and idle if you are feeling like you need some company.

Here's what my friend recommends on Reply All podcast:

Here's a rundown of the Reply All folks' favorite shows: https://gimletmedia....osts/getting-started
It's a pretty good list. Personally, my favorite segments are called Yes Yes No. Their boss brings them a tweet he doesn't understand and they break it down for him -- typically it requires going deep on multiple complex stories to understand the context and why the tweet is funny or clever.

Snapchat theif and crime machine are some of the best pod cast episodes of all time.
888
Someone suggested to me the Reply All podcast, and in particular their recent call in shows.  Does sound like it might be comforting: https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all

Any humor podcast is going to be good for the soul and help you keep things in perspective.  Better to laugh than cry.

On a related note, I think for mental health limiting your watching/reading of news is a good idea.  Especially if anyone is watching news on tv, or reading clickbait freak out news posts.
It's just not helpful to subject yourself to more of that than you need to get your basic information.
889
I don't think there is anything in CHS that effects this.. I wonder if its your remote desktop tool or a security app doing it?
890
There's never a bad time to play board games.
See this thread: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=23854

The first post on that thread is a recommendation for one of the best board games ever made: The PANDEMIC series of games (fully cooperative).
Highly highly recommended.

Regaring ActiveWindowBrowserUrl, what I *could* do if people wanted, was make it hold the url in Notes *IF* there is one, and be blank otherwise (e.g. not display any non-url notes).

Yep.  btw "%Notes%" will leave off the "Notes: " word if you dont want that.
894
Another *GREAT* activity would be do some things that bring you some sense of security and piece of mind, like backing up your computer.

If anyone is looking for a game they can play with a buddy remotely, over text or voice chat, I'd like to suggest my play-by-paper version of the awesome game Codenames Duet:

As someone who is prone to overthink things and dwell on things I *should* have done but didn't, and prone to spend large amounts of time running unproductive things over in my mind, I think the best thing for me is to focus on the things I can control and improve in my life that will create some positive feelings and take my mind off of unproductive worrying.

So I've been exercising and eating less snacks, and trying to focus on coding.
Might be time to pick a random new coding project to keep my mind busy -- or if others have any project ideas let's hear them!

What about you guys, what are your coping strategies?

ps. The other thing that keeps me grounded and calmer is knowing there are people online to talk with and share anxieties -- that's you folks!
897
I know a lot of people are nervous and uncertain.. Fear of losing jobs, health, investments.

Let's have a happy thread where we can share reassuring tips, projects, and mental strategies to stay sane and calm in this crazy time.

No rumors or panic in this thread, just strategies for staying sane and coping with the stress.

Ah I think I understand the problem.

In the database, as you have noticed, the url is store in the Notes/Decription field.
The %ActiveWindowBrowserUrl% variable is actually being cleared I think when you go to paste into a new app.

So I think the solution is just to use the Notes field, no?

EDIT:

So I guess maybe what you're saying is in the template I need to remove the %ActiveWindowUrl% field and make clear to use %Notes% for the url in web captures.
